The other day I picked up Jerry Haber's report that Michael Walzer had at last come out against Gaza as an unjust war. He did so in the Hebrew edition of Haaretz, with a co-author, Avishai Margalit. "Nogal" at TNR has helpfully provided a translation of a portion of the piece, and it concludes with this idea:
To what level of risk is it permissible to expose Israeli soldiers?
The guideline in our opinion should be this: That in an environment
where there are civilians, they must fight with the same care and
consideration as if those civilians were Israeli citizens.
This is a beautiful and true standard. And do you think that if the Israelis had been rooting out Hamas fighters in an Israeli city they would have operated as they did?
