Maureen Dowd joins Joyce Carol Oates as expert on gender relations of Arabs

on 21 Comments

First Joyce Carol Oates offered herself as an expert on gender relations in the Arab world.

Where 99.3% of women report having been sexually harassed & rape is epidemic–Egypt–natural to inquire: what’s the predominant religion?

People took her to task for that. Now Maureen Dowd gets in on the act, in a column on the Weiner saga:

WHEN you puzzle over why the elegant Huma Abedin is propping up the eel-like Anthony Weiner, you must remember one thing: Huma was raised in Saudi Arabia, where women are treated worse by men than anywhere else on the planet.

Thanks to Max Blumenthal.

Looking at what Carol oates have written before, she seems to be a provocateur – and blaming a whole religion is of course racist, apparently no one buy her books anymore…

As for Dowd, let her know what you think at: dowd[at]

Is Huma Abedin’s support for Anthony Weiner any different than Hillary Clinton’s support for Bill Clinton?

      @ Light

Yea, that doesnt explain Hillary’s swallowing her pride numerous times for Buba does it?
Also doesnt explain all the women in the US that stay with men who regulary beat them up either does it.
I cant believe ‘love’ is the motivation in either case of women doing that ….more that women like that are willing to take the humilation or beating for fear of losing of something else the marriage provides.

Lot’s of spouses stay in abusive or bad relationships. My point was that no one blamed Hillary’s behavior on her religion or where she was born. Naturally, Huma’s problem is all due to her growing up in Saudi Arabia. Note, I didn’t say that love was either woman’s motivation. In Hillary’s case, my guess is that she preferred staying in the White House and the long term benefits it would have on her career.

well that was sorta my point also…that its was for reasons other than any religion.

My take is that both marriages were calculated and set up by Hillary Clinton.

… or any different from Silda Wall Spitzer or any of the other myriad American political wives who “stand by your man” (as sung by that great Saudi Arabian country music singer, Tammy Wynette) after a sex scandal? “The Good Wife” is not an Arabic TV show. Its an iconic American one.

Huumm….I am pretty sure that if I had done what Weiner did, my wife would say my ‘ exposure days in the lime light were over if I wanted any kind of home to come home to…or anyone that would ever speak to me again .. and probably mandatory therapy for the rest of my natural life …at a minimum. I would likely have to move into the tree house in the back yard for a period of time in addition.

I find it as something very peculiar to United States, and indeed bizarre: wives being dragged to show “solidarity with the husbands” and thus appear with them at humiliating press conferences, court trials etc. In my native Poland there is no such expectation or such practice, and I dare to conjecture that it does not happen in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Weiner’s campaign seems to be the blessing to New York press that is starved of material during uneventful summer. There is a campaign for the seat of Mayor, but discussing candidates programs, views, records on issues etc. is singularly boring. I regret to say that even Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo succumbed to temptation of firing a cheap shot by citing verbatim the spokesgirl of Weiner:
It would be more gentlemanly to summarize the statement, that was quickly cited by NY Daily News (with a lot of dots, so people who do not know what t..t is must persuse TPM)
and then everything is repeated in London sleasoids.

it is typical condescending ignorance from pseudo-intellectual know-it-alls, and pretty slimy internalized sexism to boot. so what, if huma were not-so elegant it would expected of her to have to endure the pathological impulses of this degenerate?

I love how Maureen Dowd just flat out resorts to casual racism to explain this situation, instead of simply noting that this woman married and stayed with this piece of filth in the first place. So she may be “elegant,” but that doesn’t mean she’s smart or free of personality defects.

“Saudi Arabia, where women are treated worse by men than anywhere else on the planet”

Being a woman in Saudi Arabia can be a tough deal, but as far as I can tell it’s preferable to being a woman in Afghanistan. Does anyone know where women are treated worst by men?

White left-leaning women dissing Arabs/Islam isn’t new. Erica Jong called them a “barbarious race” or something to that effect.

Interestingly enough, most Jewish men I know wouldn’t really mind dating an Arab muslim woman as long as she wasn’t a fanatical muslim. However, most (white) Jewish women are far more standoffish when it comes to Arab muslim men from what I’ve seen.

I think women in general, especially well-to-do women, have been fed this image of the barbarious, wife-beating Arab. “Not without my daughter” was an orgy of that.

But sure, the Arab region today lags behind even Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of gender equality according to the U.N.
But there’s a singling out effect going on here.

Over to San Diego, Mayor Bob Filner (who is in a long-running sex scandal too).

He made a trip to France, to visit a conference organised by Organization of Iranian-American Communities (IOAC). Afterward it appeared that IOAC is not a 501(c) (3) non-profit organisation, the trip cannnot be a gift so he has to pay for it himself.

Then this: News of sexual harassment allegations broke several days after his return to San Diego [from France, last June]. Is this a way of saying to the mayor: IOAC does not fit in the war-on-Iran scheme, and so is not AIPAC approved?

Gee , I wonder if Maureen Dowd/ Joyce Carol Oates would have a comment on this behavior by Jewish men.

” Ultra-Orthodox protesters shatter bus windows after female passenger refuses to sit in back
Demonstrators in Beit Shemesh block path of bus and smashed its windshield with a hammer, before moving on to two other buses nearby; police detain two.

I wonder just how many Jewish Women stay in abusive relationships with their fanatical spouses.I guess they were brought up that way,so it,s easy to understand.

    Right Maureen and Carol???.

Abedin was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Both her parents were educators. They moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, when she was two.
Her father was an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University, and later received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Her mother received her Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania also, and is currently an associate professor of sociology at Dar Al-Hekma College in Jeddah.
Abedin returned to the United States when she was 18, and attended George Washington University.

She’s almost implying that her Muslim background causes her subservience to her man. And the man who is treating her like such dog shit is not a Muslim at all -He can’t even say today, that he has stopped his dirty habits.

Dowd has some pretty sarcastic and hilarious articles from time to time. Why she would make such a tired association about Saudi Arabia shows her devotion to the american politburo newspeak.

The “elegant Huma Abedin”? haha. She’s a repugnant careerist who married a guy who loathes the people she comes from, elegant is not a word I would use to describe that lady

I guess Samantha Powell is also elegant. Traditionally, the most elegant people were the magnates (the rich and powerful) but also courtiers, courtesans, intellectuals receiving favors and so on.

I wonder why she thinks that this pervert should remain in the same house as her child………

He broke many “rules”, and still thinks he should be elected by the people and forgiven his “weaknesses” that he thinks will make him stronger……….

    He’s a narcissist and a sociopath.

This condition affects one percent of the population.[2][3] First formulated in 1968, it was historically called megalomania, and is severe egocentrism.”
