Christie will get another crack at not saying ‘occupied territories’ at NY Adelson fete

Fresh off their event in Las Vegas, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Sheldon Adelson are set to meet up again at a “Champions of Jewish Values” gala in New York, May 18. Christie will be keynoting the event, and Adelson is expected to show. So is another Republican presidential possible: Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. And liberals Sean Penn and Cory Booker. Go figure.

Hosting is Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, who was on stage last October when Adelson said Obama should nuke Iran.

Last week the governor had to apologize to Adelson for using the words “occupied territories” in his Las Vegas speech to the Republican Jewish Coalition. Some rightwing Israel supporters assert that as a result, Adelson, the biggest Republican donor, won’t be endorsing Christie in 2016.

Repeat after me, Governor, Judea and Samaria.

Here is the announcement of the May 18 gala: it costs $750 to get in and champion Jewish values. Sean Penn will be there too, because he helped save an American Jew in Bolivia in 2011.

Boteach promotes the event, and his organization, This World.

the leading organization bringing universal Jewish values to the media and mainstream culture, will be presenting its 2014 Champion of Jewish Justice to actor Sean Penn at its Second Annual Champions of Jewish Values International Awards Gala on May 18, 2014, at Cipriani (E. 42nd Street).

Financier Michael Steinhardt is to be there, and Senator Cory Booker too. This is the source of Rabbi Shmuley’s power, by the way– the reason that the mellifluous rabbi was a necessary stop for Samantha Power to become the next ambassador to the U.N. and in Cory Booker’s march to the Senate, too. Boteach may be a rightwing preacher who promotes books on Kosher Lust, but he’s got big money behind him. Like Steinhardt. Like the Hollywood financier David Bergstein.

P.S. Mort Klein of the Zionist Organization of America, says that Christie bullied him when he tried to explain what was wrong with the words “occupied territories.” Klein says that Christie only apologized for the remark when he realized that it hurt him with big donors. And Klein is also worried that Christie is too friendly to Muslims.

Christie also turned a blind eye to the deeply troubling record of the people who were trying to build the Ground Zero Mosque, deriding anyone concerned about their radical statements and questionable motives as “crazies.”  He blasted the New York Police Department’s surveillance of Muslim communities – which has been responsible for stopping multiple attempted terror attacks – as possibly “born out of arrogance, or out of paranoia, or out of both.”

All this and more is why Daniel Pipes and Steven Emerson wrote “time and again Christie has sided with Islamist forces against those safeguarding American security and civilization.”

“the leading organization bringing universal Jewish values to the media and mainstream culture”

thuggery, intimidation, anti intellectualism, injustice and slavery to money are by no means Jewish and certainly not universal values

    Champions of Jewish Values?

Is it wise for the Jewish community to permit Likud Zionists, religious Zionists and Greater Israelists to define the following values as “Jewish values”?

    1. apartheid
    2. assassinations
    3. attacks on American presidents
    4. attacks on Europe
    5. censorship
    6. Christian Zionism
    7. Clash of Civilizations
    8. collective punishment
    9. endless Mideast wars
    10. false flag ops
    11. Global War on Terror
    12. Greater Israel
    13. house demolitions
    14. Iran War
    15. Iraq War
    16. Islamophobia
    17. Jewish-only settlements
    18. Jonathan Pollard
    19. messianic ethnic nationalism
    20. messianic religious nationalism
    21. neoconservatism
    22. Old Testament cultism
    23. olive tree uprootings
    24. passport thefts
    25. police state culture
    26. price tag attacks
    27. racism
    28. radical wealth inequality
    29. segregation
    30. shady billionaires
    31. spitting on Christians
    32. torture
    33. total surveillance state

Why would Sean Penn want to associate himself with these values?

Isn’t it a matter of considerable historical urgency for leading Jewish organizations and Jews to start reminding the world of the many positive values in the Jewish tradition?

Sean, what does your list for Liberal Zionism look like?

      • seanmcbride on April 9, 2014, 7:49 pm

        libra,

Sean, what does your list for Liberal Zionism look like?

What is interesting is that arguably the list for liberal Zionism is identical to that toxic list for Likud Zionism — liberal Zionists like Shimon Peres, Dennis Ross, Martin Indyk and Aaron David Miller have been running interference for Likud Zionism through the hocus-pocus of fooling the world into believing that *any* major faction of the Israeli government and Israel lobby has been seriously interested in pursuing a fair and just solution to the Palestinian issue.

While liberal Zionists have worked hard to put a pretty face on Zionism, to emote about their good intentions, the Israeli government under both “right” and “left”regimes has continued to create facts on the ground of Greater Israel in the form of ever-expanding settlements.

An immediate example at hand: one of the self-described liberal Zionist commenters on Mondoweiss for several years now has claimed to express support for the two-state solution on principled and enlightened grounds while unloading torrents of verbal abuse on anyone who has criticized right-wing extremists in the Zionist world.

Regarding that long list of positive values in the Jewish tradition I referred to — none of them are dependent on or connected to Zionism. They would include speaking truth to power, social justice, philanthropy, charity, love of learning, visionary risk-taking, intellectual seriousness, moral and ethical gravitas, stringent self-criticism, etc. — all the good stuff that I have found inspiring in my exposure to the best representatives of that tradition.

My guess is that the Jewish community is going to wake up with a terrible headache from its bout with Zionism — it will take decades to undo the damage and get back on a positive track.

Serious Jewish thinkers like Peter Beinart are trying to turn things around, but their efforts are too little, too late.

The most urgent mission facing the Jewish community: reminding the world that Judaism and Jewish civilization stand for more than militant ethnic nationalism and the single-minded pursuit of ethnic-self-interest.

        @ libra
Just ignore the list and say Israel is not quite right in its occupation?

“And Klein is also worried that Christie is too friendly to Muslims”. Shouldn’t Klein be censored for calling Muslims, Muslims and not terrorists, meanwhile at the BBC, management have decided that the whole of Jerusalem will be referred to as an Israeli City. the BBC’s Senior Editorial Strategy Advisor, Leanne Buckle, has confirmed that the BBC is happy to refer to the whole of Jerusalem as an “Israeli” city. It sees no need for its journalists to make the facts of international law, or even UK government policy, clear to its audiences. http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/amena-saleem/senior-bbc-official-insists-all-jerusalem-israeli-city

In the olden days when Americans acted as agents of a foreign power it was considered an act of treason.

On a related note, consider Chris Hedges POV on AIPAC/Israel’s war on American universities:

RE: “Mort Klein of the Zionist Organization of America, says that Christie bullied him when he tried to explain what was wrong with the words ‘occupied territories’.” ~ Weiss

MY COMMENT: I’m certainly not a fan of Chris Christie’s, but based upon my impression of the tactics used by the Zionist Organization of America, I can’t help but question Klein’s perception of who actually bullied whom. I strongly suspect that instead of calmly trying to explain to Christie what was “wrong” (in Klein’s not at all humble opinion) with the words ‘occupied territories’, Mort Klein actually ‘lit into’* Christie with something much more akin to reading Christie the riot act. I believe it is likely that what Klein saw as Christie’s bulling of him was actually Chris Christie’s reaction to what Christie saw as an attack (in public) on him by Mort Klein.

P.P.S. Personally, I consider the far-right-wing Zionist Organization of America to be a subversive organization. I see it as being only a bit subversive to the U.S., but I see it as being extremely (i.e. existentially) subversive to Israel (especially a “Jewish and democratic” Israel).

        LOL…even Ann Coulter hates Adelson.

Casino Boss And Amnesty Tout Sheldon Adelson: Competition For Thee, But Not For Me
By Ann Coulter on April 9, 2014 at 6:16pm

Between having Republican presidential candidates fly to Las Vegas to kiss his ring, billionaire Sheldon Adelson has managed to fit in time to talk Sen. Lindsey Graham into sponsoring a bill banning Internet gambling.

As you may know, Sheldon Adelson is a CASINO OWNER. Internet gambling would compete with his casino business.

On the other hand, when it comes to the services Adelson isn’t selling, but buying—low-skilled workers—he’s for unbridled competition, preferring not to limit the supply even to people who are legally in the United States. (Weirdly, so is Lindsey Graham.)

Adelson is a big backer of amnesty, telling The Wall Street Journal: “It would be inhumane to send those people back, to send 12 million people out of this country. … So we’ve got to find a way, find a route for those people to get legal citizenship.”

Adelson is an especially telling example of the self-interest of businessmen on immigration. His newspaper, Israel Today, the largest newspaper in Israel, is wildly patriotic on immigration .
Israel Today has trumpeted the success of the 15-foot razor-wire fence along Israel’s 140-mile border with Egypt, triumphantly noting last August that, for the first time, “no infiltrations were recorded from the Egyptian border, compared to 193 from the same month last year.”

Adelson himself had suggested just such a policy to the Los Angeles Times last year, saying he wanted to “Put a big fence around our country.”

By “our country,” he, of course, meant Israel. In America, he wants illegal immigrants pouring across the border to provide him with an endless supply of cheap labor. “”

Christie looks like damaged goods after that bridge fiasco.
The republicans do not appear to be in good shape for 2016.
