Saturday’s marches are going to make America great again

Activism
on 53 Comments

There is a radicalization unfolding in this country. It reached its highest point Saturday with over a half million in DC and three quarters of a million in Los Angeles. All across country. Ten thousand in Augusta, Maine and 5000 in Ann Arbor for example. All over. We saw history being made by people taking control of their own lives. These were the largest demonstrations of people we have ever had.

It began with Occupy. Then Black Lives Matter. Three years ago 49% of young people under the age of 29 said they preferred socialism over capitalism. This spread. Sanders got 13 million votes. Now Saturday’s historical outpouring.

Why? Real wages haven’t gone up in 40 years. Unemployment and underemployment is huge, perhaps 20 %, double that for black people. New jobs are temporary and low paying. The rich are getting richer. Health care and education are good only for the well off. Half the population is either poor or near poor.

Trump’s solutions are BS. Scapegoating Mexicans and Muslims, building a wall, creating a registry, deporting young people, strengthening local cops, spending even more on the military, lowering taxes for the rich, charging tariffs, cutting health insurance. drilling for more oil, fracking for natural gas, denying climate change, denying women the right to control their own bodies. All of this will do nothing to relieve people’s plight.

So they hit the streets. Initiated by women. Millions. Diverse. Young. Trump had only been in office 2 days.

The genie is out of the bottle and the ruling class must be terrified of what will come. They didn’t want Trump in the first place. But their candidate Clinton didn’t cut the mustard. People didn’t like or trust her and not enough of them would vote for her.

So the elite tried to delegitimize Trump with the lie that the Russians interfered with the election. This only added fuel to the fire. Saturday’s tremendous outpouring first and foremost sent a message to the people there: look how many and how powerful we are. It sent a message to the American people. All the marchers have families and friends. Multiply three million times this.

It was mobilizations like this that ended the war in Vietnam. Antiwar sentiment spread to the soldiers over there. They wouldn’t fight. They stopped fighting and it was all over. That’s what could happen here. Trump could be all over.

We know now we can stop Trump and his deplorable cabinet full of billionaires and generals. He found a fox for every chicken copp. These people want to end public education, pollute the environment, impoverish workers, control women’s bodies and further unleash the cops.

Can they get away with this? After Saturday I think not. The man has been in office but a few days and his plan to “make America great again” might succeed but ironically in a way he didn’t plan on. He mobilized the American people who are out there acting in their own interests for a change. When this happens and it doesn’t happen often people make their own history as Howard Zinn taught us. They realize they have a world to win.

looks like the only way Establishment Dems develop a conscience (flimsy and self-absorbed, though it is) is when they’re out of office.

Interesting article from Paul Craig Roberts.

    http://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2017/01/20/trumps-declaration-war/

(I particularly like the bit where he points out the tension between claiming (a) that America is a racist society, and Trump will make it worse, and (b) that it is wrong for Trump to prevent persecuted people from entering America. But that is not the main message of the piece.)

ROHA- “Interesting article from Paul Craig Roberts.”

I have mixed emotions about Paul Craig Roberts. That he appears to occasionally make sense seems to me primarily a function of the demise of folks on the Left with a brain. Left, Liberal, Progressive have become little more than brands. Roberts, like James Petras, relies overly much on the polemic.

ROHA- “…that it is wrong for Trump to prevent persecuted people from entering America.”

The obvious but unstated reality is that if the empire wasn’t persecuting these people, they wouldn’t be fleeing their home countries. The wall/fence initiated during Clinton wouldn’t be necessary. But, of course, Trump can’t state that directly and has to initiate change through the back door.

My big problem with this article is that Paul Craig Roberts is gushing over Trump the way liberals gushed over Obama. Clearly Trump is disrupting the imperial juggernaut, which is good. However, to delude oneself that Trump is some sort of populist White Knight is self-deception on steroids.

I don’t think we are required to treat PCR as an infallible oracle, but it is refreshing to see bits of commentary that are not clichéd drivel.

He does seem to hope for more from Trump than he is likely to get. Presidents are always a disappointment, even when you expect the worst from them. However, I am enjoying the way the Orange Knight is getting up a lot of self-important and self-absorbed noses.

America will not be Great again until the American people demand an end to the Special Relationship with Israel that allows its government to be manipulated and run by Israeli money and pro Israeli paid employees of Israel. America will not be Great until it puts America and Americans first and not Israel and illegal settlements. Imagine what $38 billion could do for American taxpayers in a positive sense instead of making Americans complicit in Israeli War Crimes. Trump is but a puppet of Israel. March for American Self Respect and reclaim your nation. You all deserve better than what Netanyahu and his criminals want to allow you. Britain has woken up to the damage the Israel Lobby has been doing there. C’mon America…..you’ve started……reclaim your nation….make your nation mean something again.

Looks like the zionists are salivating over Trump, flattering him, and buttering him up. He is going to be their savior now that Obama is gone. I guess crooked Nutty and Drumpf have so much in common too.

“A senior Israeli official has praised the new US President Donald Trump as Israel’s “true friend in the White House”, marking a dramatic shift in relations between the two countries after the bitterness of the Barack Obama years.

Tzipi Hotovely, the Israeli deputy minister of foreign affairs, said that the country was “very happy about the new administration” after a phone call between Mr Trump and the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme on Monday, Ms Hotovely said: “I think that all the declarations of the Trump administration were showing a deep friendship to Israel. They understand the complexity of the situation in the Middle East, in a world where everything is falling apart around us.”

“When Israel continues being the only democratic regime in the region, they want to keep Israel in its best shape.”

In the “very warm” phone call on Sunday evening, Mr Trump and Mr Netanyahu reportedly discussed military, security and intelligence cooperation between the two allies, a statement from Mr Netanyahu’s office said, including the “threat posed by Iran”, which has pledged Israel’s destruction. ”

Israeli press reported that some Trump people called Bibi’s people, asking the latter to request Bibi hold off on that new expansion of settlements about to be voted on in the Knesset until Trump has his meeting with Bibi. “Don’t surprise us,” they urged. I am not referring to being investigated for his countless lies. You can bet many entities are already looking into ethics violations. There will be plenty to work with when it comes to Trump.

        Kay,

I know what you are trying to deviate everybody’s attention to: racketeering and other private crime that does not directly direct politics. It’s a call to look at a selective list of thieves, while forgetting that one’s own party is by its very nature the party of worldwide war and the main perp destroying Palestine and the US both. It’s crimes against peace and war crimes they should hang for and that includes both parties, no exceptions.

The “ethics group” doesn’t seem to look at crimes against humanity as if they were a breach of ethics.

I don’t give a damn for that kind of ethics. If Al Capone can stop war and provide full justice for the invaded, let him steal all he can and more! That’ll be way cheaper than our War Ministry and the “Israel” thing.

and about the workless poors of the US, he never presented a viable and clear plan to
get really work back to them.
I am following JL Melenchon’s campaign in France, as he is running for the the presidential elections He explain clearly in his meetings, what has to be done to really how to bring back
work to the people, he works with the work unions, and was himself work minister duringF.Mitterand’s presidentship and left the socialist party as they were no more, like the Dems in US as they were no more a left party. his campaign on youtube is very interesting but of course in french, but even latching the and the crowds who attend his meetings is quite interesting.

As I remembered it, the Vietnam War didn’t end when the soldiers put down their arms. It ended after the tragic misadventure had completely sucked the soul out of the country, about the time each of us either personally suffered, or had a loved one or friend that suffered, from the war. Seems to me that’s why we were finally able to get rid of the Republicans after Dubbya laid waste to our wonderful nation, and how it will have to happen yet again. Unfortunately, there will be a lot more suffering in the interim.

I agree regarding the pivotal role of the British mandate which was guided by the Balfour declaration. The american role at birth was to work for the partition resolution. Weapons came from the Soviet sphere of influence in that birth.
Since 67 america has been a supplier of weapons and at the critical moment of 73 the US (nixon) saved Israel’s life (more or less).

Living since decades is Europe, I watched how millions of europeans march to force their governments to make changes in their policies. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not, however they had nothing to lose, but everything to gain!
Over the years I urged my fellow americans to go on the streets and demonstrate for their demands, however not in thousands, but in millions. However, watching these sunday demonstrations on different TV channels, it seems everyone tries to make a point of his or her own, instead of voicing concentrated interests. This will not work! I watched OWS, that was nothing but a street partry for many, to die out in a short time, not achieving anything.

I did not elect Trump, however he is our president now, so we owe him at least the usual 100 days after taking office to show us what he plans to do. Instead of waiting, the establishment, great number of politicians and the international press immediately declared a war on him, forgetting that the people elected him, not Hillary, whom I personally wished even less to win. That saying about the pest or cholera. So let us be fair, give the man a chance, he may not be as bad as he tries us to believe.

Everyone in this country have a boss or two, unless you are self employed, and during my life I had bosses not qualified for that position, however we had to accept him! Trump is our president for 4 years at least, so we have to live with it.
I also had new bosses who in three months tried to change the world, however we pulled him back to reality and I hope the staff of Trump will do the same.
Trump is doing a good job, he breaks up the decades old crust of the establishment running this country, as it really makes no difference which party provides the president, the same circles run us. He may be a Rambo, however we may have an other country after he steps down, hopefully a better one.

When the fight for the WH and elections are over, it is time for a nation to get together behind the new president to work together, even if we don´t like him personally, as personal feelings have no place in such positions. “Please ask the Environment Minister in Berlin, why did she transfer 5 million dollars into the Clinton Foundation only a short time before elections?”

To plant trees in Africa. It is expensive.
I must admit, you are right, Theo. Nobody has any facts like this about the Trump Foundations, and all of his business dealings.

“What will MW do, play political opposition to Trump?”

Goodness, no! Perish the thought! And for God’s sake, don’t tell Trump Mondo doesn’t like him. He’ll shut it down, as he should.

“Ridiculing is your way to discredit anyone who may be a danger to your rule at MW, it seems they allow you to say and do anything! “

That’s not true, “Theo”, The Mods here keep good track, I’ve been warned several times, and I’m on double-secret-probation. One more e-mail complaint to the Mondo Editors about me, and they will ban me. A few short words should do it.

“Say a few funny words and you will feel immediately better!”

Yes, I will, (and I do!). On the other hand, if sucking Trump makes you feel better, go right ahead. Nice guys finish last.

“When the fight for the WH and elections are over, it is time for a nation to get together behind the new president to work together, even if we don´t like him personally, as personal feelings have no place in such positions”

“Theo” I am very familiar with the principle you are espousing here.
It’s the “Führerprinzip” from the subordinate’s point of view.
I’m sure it means a lot to you, and a principle you find it hard to violate’

” I always know what I am talking about! ” Theo

Are you trying to take over Mooser,s position as court Jester. You will need to be more cerebral than that display of adolescent twaddle.
Btw , all work and no play makes Theo a dull boy.

““As far as Trump goes, I did not elect him, however he is my president now, so I have to back him up” “Theo”

After all, a man must follow his orders, and remain true to his code.

Me, I’ll have one for my baby, and one more for the road.

I’m in general agreement with your article on an important subject, but i have one possible nit (knit?). I don’t think US soldiers ever stopped fighting or recall reading anything to that effect if by which you mean a soldier disobeyed an order to shoot. He might have shot the officer in the back but not fighting when you’re ordered to has serious consequences. And besides, for many covering your buddy is a prime motivation to fight when you’re being shot at

The US definitely did pull out largely as a consequence of the protest movement although Nixon and Kissenger did also drag the war out for another three years., including expanding into Cambodia a hitherto peaceful country that paid the ultimate price.

In any event thx for the report. A truly awesome march. We should have some marches in states that voted for Trump–taking a page from the civil rights movement so to speak.

    Sad.

.” I don’t think US soldiers ever stopped fighting or recall reading anything to that effect if by which you mean a soldier disobeyed an order to shoot”

Oh yeah, I know how that goes:

Sgt: “Pvt Mooser, over the top, and take out that enemy machine gun!”

Pvt.Mooser: “But there’s no cover, I’ll get cut to pieces! You wouldn’t like that Sarge! All my uniforms are made for a whole person! I’d fail inspection”

Sgt: “Pvt Mooser, you know what I told you about back-talk in the face of an order?”

Mooser: “Okay, okay, here I go. Anything rather then listen to you kvetch!”

Pvt. Mooser scurries off into the darkness
The rattle of machine-gun fire is heard, and then the plaintive cry:

    Mooser: “Medic! Medic! I’m hit!”

Medic: “Take 2 aspirin, and mail me the $50!”

“We know now we can stop Trump …”
Anyone can stop a democratically elected government. It has been done often. Most effectively in Czechoslovakia 1948. Less effectively in Ukrainya 2014. The more interesting question is: When you have stopped a democratically elected government, what do you do afterwards?

“: When you have stopped a democratically elected government, what do you do afterwards?”

Ah, I see, impeaching a President, or a President resigning is like the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovokia. No difference, and a justified excuse for treason.

After a President is impeached, or if he leaves office to spend more time with Ivanka, the US Constitution provides the order of succession. You got a problem with that? It’s happened a number of times.
Trump will go like Nixon. The Vice-President moves up to President, until his turn comes. Or do you plan to take up arms for Trumpism?
