Palestinian medic, 21, is killed by Israeli sniper as she tends wounded in Gaza

Today’s news from Gaza was especially disturbing. Israeli snipers shot 40 protesters and killed one of them: Razan al-Najjar, a 21-year-old volunteer medic. She was wearing a white coat when she was shot, news accounts say, and one report says she was attempting to tend a wounded protester.

Update: Her funeral was Saturday June 2, and thousands attended.

Funeral of Razan al-Najjar, June 2, 2018.

The Guardian:

According to health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra, Najjar was a volunteer with the ministry, wearing the white uniform of a medic when she was shot in the chest.

CNN has the story. Iyad Abuheweila of the New York Times reported the killing by twitter:

Razan Al Najjar 21, a volunteer paramedic, was shot dead by IDF in eastern Khan Younis in southern Gaza Strip according to Gaza Health Ministry spokesman.

Middle East Eye reports: al-Najjar “has been photographed on numerous occasions helping Palestinians injured by Israeli fire during protests.”

Palestine Live has tweeted this photo of al Najjar that it says was taken shortly before she was killed:

Razan Al-Najjar treating an injured youth shortly before she was killed at the Gaza fence. Photo from Palestine Live. June 1, 2018.

Asaf Ronel of Haaretz:

A paramedic who was with Razan al-Najjar told journalists in that the 21-year-old nurse tried to reach a protester wounded near the . “I told her it is dangerous but she said she’s not afraid to die & wants to help the wounded”

Ronel says al-Najjar was not likely targeted when she was killed:

It’s unlikely that a sniper deliberately killed Razan al-Najjar. Her death is an expected result of repeated use of live fire by Israeli soldiers to prevent medical care in (in addition to illegal & immoral use of snipers against unarmed protesters)

The New York Times has published a superb video interview of al-Najjar from a month ago, highlighting her strength and commitment. She works not for money but for God, she says. The piece is by Yousur Al-Hlou, Iyad Abuheweila and Neil Collier. The Times also published this article on the killing.

(James North had challenged the New York Times: “An reporter is in , and and he tweeted out that ‘s snipers murdered a 21-year-old nurse, . Will his bosses in New York publish this in their newspaper? (If a rocket from Gaza killed an nurse, we would read all about it.)”)

B’Tselem yesterday issued a report on the open-fire policy at the Gaza fence that describes the risks that medical personnel experience, even though they are clearly marked. From researcher Khaled al-Azayzeh, on a May 2 incident:

I advanced toward the spot with the first-aid team. The soldiers fired live rounds near us to warn us not to approach. One of the women on the emergency team put up her hands to set the soldiers minds at ease and let them know we were a medical crew, and we kept advancing, but the shooting continued near us and over our heads. The soldiers also fired teargas canisters behind us. Despite this, we managed to get to the two guys. I found that the guy who was injured is a relative of mine, Muhammad Musbah. He had been hit by a live bullet in the right leg and was lying on his back. His leg was completely torn up below the knee and he was bleeding badly. I bandaged the wound with medical gauze and Wasim Musbah, who was with us, brought the stick the Palestinian flag had been tied to, broke it in two and tied it to the injured leg as a splint for support. The entire time we were caring for him, the soldiers kept firing above us. A few young guys moved forward till they reached us, and together we lifted Muhammad and got him away from the barbed wire fence and on to a tuk-tuk, because there was no ambulance there.

Dr. Mustafa Barghouti of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society issued a statement calling for an international investigation of Najjar’s killing and the shooting of three other medics yesterday.

We demand an immediate international response to Israeli humanitarian law violations in Gaza. We call on our international friends and partners to publicly condemn Razan’s killing and to demand that Israel be held accountable for its crimes under international law.

We grieve with her family and our colleagues in Gaza during this tragic time. We ask our partners who are in the country to please join us tomorrow at 12pm at the Manara circle in Ramallah to honor Razan’s memory and demand an end to the bloody oppression of Gaza.

Thanks to Scott Roth.

I cry for the mother of her child targeted, murdered
I pray daily the world awake for Africa and Palestine as these human beings are systematically exterminated for financial benefit for primarily the western world and others. These murders are for financial gains only blatant thief of human life, land, natural resources, murders against all that is sane, good, honest. These murders are satanic evil. No God would love satanic acts like murder, thief. God bless these defenseless human beings who have a right to live.
How do you know who is in control, look at those who control speech, government, money.

What spirit and courage she showed. What a terrible loss and how much more so to hear her speak about her people, what she was doing and how proud her father was of her. 119 murdered since March. The outrage that would be expressed if it were 119 dead jews compared to the silence about the regular murder of palestinians. If there is a God there will be hell to pay.

        @Marnie, et al

The blatant murder of this brave, dedicated, young Palestinian medic, Razan al-Najjar, by the IDF has enraged me.

It’s long since time that we recognize screaming reality: Zionists are fascists, neo-Nazis, racists, pure and simple. They are a betrayal of Judaism and the six million Jews who perished at the hands of Germany’s Third Reich. As the Nazis subscribed to the “Aryan Myth,” Zionists believe they had/have a “God given” right to “return” to what they erroneously believe to be their “home land” and dispossess, expel, slaughter, oppress, imprison the indigenous Palestinians without charge and subject them to collective punishments and ghettoization, e.g., the Gaza Strip, the world’s largest outdoor prison.

Palestinians’ suffering is only going to get worse as they increasingly become the majority between the River and the Sea and the Zionists become more and more panic stricken, even more so with falling Jewish immigration, soaring emigration and international condemnation for their thoroughly documented crimes against humanity.

Right now, they have America in their pocket more than ever with multi-billionaire, casino magnate, ultra-Zionist, Sheldon Adelson, pulling Trump’s strings and determining US policy in the region. The good news is that thanks to Mondoweiss and other advocates for Palestinians, a rapidly growing number of Americans, especially youth, including more and more Jews, are comprehending the immense harm Zionism is inflicting not only on the Palestinians, but America as well.

It would be great to believe these murderers would burn in hell but it would be more satisfying if murderers and thieves could be rounded up placed on an island removed from humanity they work so well at distroying. Centuries of wars has on benefits for humanity. Those who invest committ your lives and your children lives benefit. humanity does not benefit and humanity cannot be made whole from any wars. Peace would benefit humanity but peace is not a financial benefit for those who profit from wars. Who are the major warmongers, profiteers from manufactured conflicts and wars not brain surgery.

izraelis will convince themselves in a heartbeat that this nurse was a terrorist; if she wasn’t a terrorist, she had known terrorist alliances; if that wasn’t it she was giving aid to the enemy plus she’s palestinian so what’s all the fuss about? This will be repeated over and over before this young woman is even buried.

So sorry for the family of Razan al-Najjar.

That is groupthink. Gazan means vermin in Hebrew.
If you want to change the atmosphere when speaking to an Israeli , drop Gaza unto the conversation.

It was naive to think that a settler colonial enterprise could retain the values of Judaism. Anyone can behave like a Cossack . That is not the point.

There is a cure for this constant murder. Just boycott Israel:

    • on June 2, 2018, 11:11 am

@ Blaine Coleman: boycotting turns us into antisemites. When South Africa was boycotted at the time nobody mentioned the word ‘racism’, but ‘Israel’ is exceptional’ and as such any criticism of the ZioNazi entity or compliment of the Palestinians is equated to ‘antisemitism’.

«but ‘Israel’ is exceptional’ and as such any criticism of the ZioNazi entity or compliment of the Palestinians is equated to ‘antisemitism’.»

True! But then it’s our duty to equate the whole résistance to the Israeli constant murdering and emprisoning of the Gaza Palestinians and of other Palestinian regions as ‘ANTINAZIONISM’, and explain to the world what NAZIONISM really means against the Palestinians, and why that Israeli murderous and genocidal/apartheid policy has to be condemned internationally relentlessly, and also accuse the main defender of that Nazionist country, the USA, for all its wrongdoings against the Palestinians’ Defense attempts by real human organizations like Mondoweiss, Jewish Voice for Peace, etc.

“Thousands Attend Funeral of Palestinian Medic Killed by Israeli Army in Gaza Protest …

Thousands of Palestinians are attending Saturday the funeral of a volunteer medic killed by Israeli soldiers during protests along the Gaza border fence on Friday. The funeral procession for Razan Najjar, 21, departed from her hometown of Khuza’a and will conclude in a cemetery in Khan Yunis.

According to Palestinian Health Minister Dr. Jawad Awaad, Najjar was shot in the neck. “This is a war crime,” he said Friday, saying Najjar was shot while clearly wearing a medical staff uniform. Earlier that day, Najjar gave an interview in which she took pride in the aid she was providing for the wounded, Awaad added.

Speaking at a convention in Wadi Ara on Saturday, Israeli-Arab lawmaker Ahmad Tibi (Joint List) called Najjar’s killing “a heinous war crime,” adding that the U.S. and its envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, who vetoed the Security Council resolution for “international protection” for the Palestinians, bear responsibility for Najjar’s death.

Another 40 people were reported wounded during Friday’s protest along the Gaza border. Since the confrontations along the border of May 14, the number of participants has fallen dramatically, and Hamas and other Palestinian factions have set June 5 as the date for a march by tens of thousands to mark 51 years since the Six-Day War, known as Nakba Day by the Palestinians. …”

It IS a war crime. But Bensouda is sitting on her butt wrt Palestine. Oh wait, this is what she said last November on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women:

“…Today, as Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, in strict accordance with the Court’s founding treaty, the Rome Statute, and on the strength of my Office’s Policy on Sexual and Gender-based Crimes and on Children, I reiterate my commitment, as well as that of my Office, to do everything we can, within our mandate and means, to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of grave crimes against women and children. We count on the support of the Court’s States Parties and the internationality community in the discharge of our mandate.

We must address reprehensible crimes perpetrated against women and girls in times of conflict. It is a collective responsibility. Our humanity demands it. ”

Come on Fatou~ how much longer must the Palestinians wait??? Don’t you believe your eyes and ears and brain as this massacre and brutal violence continues?

The US is more than complicit at this point. Nikki Haley is a disgrace to the nation. It’s hard to believe she’s a mother.

    • annie on June 2, 2018, 10:52 am

Since the confrontations along the border of May 14, the number of participants has fallen dramatically

how different are the statistics of death and maiming in the weeks prior to may 14? isn’t it more accurate to say the executions spiked on that day, perhaps as part of the killers’ celebratory events happening on may 14? isn’t it more accurate that the killings on that day were calculated and encouraged, or are we to believe there just randomly happened to be a more zealous attitude towards killing the natives while a symbolic ceremony of conquering eastern jerusalem was taking place simultaneously?

There are not many humans or individuals in high appointed or elected positions with courage, will never make for a profile in courage.
In this Day as in history courage begets death.
Why this doctor, medic life what she stood for will forever be remembered other human beings were more to her than the fear of death. Those snipers fear her and her kind, humans beings. Those sniper all cowards controlled coolaid drinking brainwashed puppets.
Brought up to hate for humanity hate for people who look like themselves.
Remembered: years ago Gaza, a child, a little girl in a classroom was targeted shot in the neck by a sniper.
A sniper feared this child, sniper paid with US tax dollars to kill this terrorist, how worthy how brave.

  6. Kay24 on June 2, 2018, 11:14 am

This is so sad. It shows that the zionists despite lying that they kill only Hamas members, are killing medics, including doctors, and members of the media, who dare to record their massacres. To think the US was the only nation to vote against the resolution to denounce the zionists for using excessive force against the Palestinians. I am ashamed and embarrassed what this country keeps doing. No wonder we are hated around the world, just like the Israelis.

    • YoniFalic on June 2, 2018, 3:23 pm

Under orders I murdered unarmed Palestinian men, women, and children (including a woman and the child in her arms) during Cast Lead. I don’t consider Hamas to be anywhere close to the evil of the IDF. As far as I can tell, a Zionist froths at the mention of Hamas because Hamas unlike the PA has resisted enmeshment in the Zionist system. In retrospect (I used to be Zionist), that resistance seems to be the original sin of Hamas from the Zionist standpoint.

      • just on June 2, 2018, 7:02 pm

Have you affiliated with Breaking the Silence, Yoni? I am grateful for your honesty, even thoiugh it is a terrible thing that you were brainwashed to be and do… I have known & know members of the US armed forces who have admitted similar transgressions of humanity to me. They are the rare ones, but they exist and for some reason feel comfortable around me enough to admit their profound regret and guilt. It’s a bit odd, but they know me for who I am I guess. Without exception, when they ‘confessed’ to me, they asked me not to tell anyone because they did not tell anyone else and did not want their families, friends, and ‘brothers- in- arms’ to know…

To your point about Hamas, Kate posted part of Gideon Levy’s column and link @ her compilation today. It is worth a read:

“Opinion: They’re right. If Palestinians in Gaza don’t shoot, no one listens / Gideon Levy

Haaretz 1 June — They are the last fighters against the Israeli occupation. While the occupied West Bank behaves like it’s given up, Gaza is not giving up — We have to say it simply and honestly: They’re right. They have no choice but to fight for their freedom with their bodies, their property, their weapons and their blood. They have no choice, except for the Qassam and the mortar. There is no way open to them except for violence or surrender. They have no way of breaching the fences that pen them in without using force, and their force is primitive and pathetic, almost touching. A people that is fighting for its freedom with kites, tunnels, mirrors, tires, scissors, incendiary devices, mortar shells and Qassam rockets, against one of the most sophisticated war machines in the world, is a people without hope. But the only way they can change their situation is with their pathetic weapons. When they’re quiet, Israel and the world take no interest in their fate. Only the Qassam restores awareness of their disaster.

When do we hear about Gaza in Israel? Only when Gaza is shooting. That’s why they have no choice but to shoot. That’s why their shooting is justified, even if it criminally harms innocent civilians, instills fear and terror in the residents of the south and is intolerable to Israel, and rightly so … It’s clear that their violence is cruel, like any violence. But what choice do they have? Every hesitant attempt they make to take a different path – a truce, a change in leadership or in their political positions – immediately encounters automatic Israeli dismissal and rejection. Israel believes them only when they shoot. After all, there’s a clear control group: the West Bank. There’s no Hamas there and no Qassam, there are barely any vestiges of terror, and what good did that do Mahmoud Abbas and his people? They’re right, because after all the diversions and deceptions and lies of Israeli propaganda, nothing can blur the fact that they have been thrown into a huge cage for the rest of their lives. An unbelievable siege, 11 years without respite, which is the greatest war crime in this arena….

      • jon s on June 3, 2018, 3:31 pm

Right. That’s why Yonifalic should hand himself in to Palestinian justice. Since the crimes he confesses to were perpetrated in Gaza and Yonifalic apparently regards Hamas favourably, he could ask to be tried by a Hamas tribunal.

” That’s why Yonifalic should hand himself in to Palestinian justice.”

Oh, please, “Jon s”, stop digging. I’m getting embarrassed for you. You want “Yoni” tried for the “war crime” of not thinking positively about his IDF service?

Oh, wait, let me guess, “Hand yourself in to Palestinian justice” must be the Israeli Left line on Btselem or any other regretful IDF vet?

      • Mooser on June 3, 2018, 6:56 pm

Notice: “Jon s” (IDF medic!) has absolutely no problem believing that an IDF unit committed war crimes during Cast Lead, he’s just incensed an IDF soldier regrets it and says so. Why, I can remember when Zionists would argue about IDF war crimes, say it didn’t happen. That’s how old I am.

Hey “Jon s”, you big IDF medic , ever think about it this way:

        1) Those were not civilians, they were Hamas dressed up as civilians. “Yoni’s” CO knew this when he ordered the assualt,( but the CO doesn’t share that kind of intelligence with anybody but the IDF medics.)

or maybe, you big compassionate IDF medic, you:

        2) The stress of combat isn’t for everybody, we aren’t all tough enough to be reserve IDF medics, and many men have confused memories and survivor’s guilt. ( Which a big IDF medic like you, “Jon s”, treats with understanding.)

But you don’t mind implicitly accepting that the IDF routinely commits war crimes, if you can have the pleasure and benefits gained by screaming “meshumad! meshumad!! It’s the best medicament the IDF medic has in his pharmacopoeia.

Brown skinned people being killed never gets much attention anyway, especially Muslims. In fact, you can sense the glee in some of the comments in other websites.

      • on June 2, 2018, 9:06 pm

You’re right – when Brown people are killed the MSM is relatively quite. But when Brown people are suspected of terrorism that changes and dramatically.

“Terror attacks carried out by Muslims receive more than five times as much media coverage as those carried out by non-Muslims in the United States, according to an academic study.

Analysis of coverage of all terrorist attacks in the US between 2011 and 2015 found there was a 449 per cent increase in media attention when the perpetrator was Muslim.

Muslims committed just 12.4 per cent of attacks during the period studied but received 41.4 per cent of news coverage, the survey found.”

Haven`t heard yet from the great Israeli apologist and ex Australian Mark Regurgitev on the killing of this young medic. Mark as you may well know is now the Zioland Ambassador to the UK and is used as the look to Zio Hasbarist when it comes to defending the indefensible. As MWers may well know his is a tragic story. His family going back many many generations were driven out of their Ancient Homeland by those nasty Romans and they ended up in Australia where he was born in Melbourne. After suffering horrendous discrimination and victimisation there he moved to his ancient etc and with his mellifluous good day cobber twang he immediately slotted into Zio life well just like a native and has now reached the dizzy heights of Ambassador to Pommieland.
If he were to be interviewed on this murder he would probably say something along the lines off:

“Let`s be clear. We don`t know the full facts. The IDF is the most moral army in the world they will carry out a thorough investigation. But let`s be clear Hgggggggggggggamas is a terrorist organisation” ad nauseum puke. All with a straight face. Just listen to this revolting two faced scumbag:

Nations should look at the US as an example of being controlled by a dangerous alien nation, and avoid falling into that same situation. Politicians in these nations must stop being bought by the zionists. Put country before shekels and power, Americans politicians could not do that. Now they are controlled by Bibi the boob.

no one will be prosecuted and we all know it. israel acts with impunity and no one does a thing. you could line 1000 palestinian children up a wall and shoot them dead and nikki haley wouldn’t bat an eye.

You remind me, Annie, a wonderful book I received from MW some years ago for a contribution: Footnotes in Gaza by Joe Sacco.

A great book of history, with some scenes resembling what you just depicted, and a real artwork.

I had never thanked MW and Phil for this book, it is the occasion.

      Good idea.
I remember the days idf justice was 10 arabs for every israeli killed.
So, should 10 female idf medics be stood against the wall?
I hear she was shot in the back.
      Should 10 face the wall?

Why do you bother iron dome jon? If anyone I knew expressed concern about the murder of palestinian the way you do, I’d have to assume they were dead and arrange for immediate interment.

I knew someone who, when talking about the murder of Emmet Till, asked why the uncle he was staying with didn’t go to the police about his kidnapping? He conveniently forgot that most law enforcement in Mississippi and other hell holes were in fact klan themselves. He chose to blame the victim. Which no doubt you will somewhere down the line, you’ll blame her for her own murder, like others have, with the BS about Hamas. I’m expecting to hear the old ‘if you play with fire you’re gonna get burned’ WRT to palestinian murders. All that and more, except what is the actual truth. The ‘state of israel’ has been on 100 year campaign to eliminate any traces of palestinian’s right to palestine, their history, their language, their culture, their dress and their food, all the while claiming they are a fiction and they left their homes voluntarily.

Also, if you are attempting to express some kind of sympathy for this woman, whose name neither you or I have a right to speak, you’re doing an incredibly terrible job. I would have to assume, from the feeling you expressed in your pithy paragraph, that you were dead.

.” Razan impresses me as having been dedicated and brave.” “Jon s”

Lucky girl, this Razan. Not every girl meets your standards. You being an IDF medic and all.

    @Jon S

“Horrible. Razan impresses me as having been dedicated and brave. Her death should be investigated and whoever is responsible should be prosecuted ”

OMG Jon S emerging from his cosy Zio closet and coming out as a “self hating/loathing/denying (choose any three from three) Jew !!

But then again the same Jon S in Zio mode describing a typical existentially threatened eternally victimised Zio “nightmare”:
“A personal experience from “Joyless Zion”:
“It so happens that my wife and I were invited to the wedding of a wonderful young couple , last Tuesday evening, in Netivot.
After the huppah and the first round of dancing we were sitting down for the first course and… the siren goes offf! For a split second I had an imaginary picture in my mind of hundreds of people running around looking for the shelter, pandemonium. Fortunately, that didn’t happen. My son-in-law was the first at the table to take charge: “everyone, just stay where you are!” So we all stayed put -and started singing, and the celebration continued. It turned out that the siren was a false alarm, but later that night a rocket did hit Netivot”

So Jon the celebrations were getting into full Zioswing at much the same time that your brothers in arms a few miles away were so morally killing and wounding innocent men women children and medics from the cosy safe comfort of their sniper locations . Hey you should have set up some sort of live action streaming – you know just like live football on the tele. Now that would really made your party go with a swing – dancing in a circle to the rhythmic music of those expanding bullets being fired. “Have a sniper , have a sniper, have a sniper Venis Mecha”.

I just read this German-language article:
Headline translated: “Every refugee should sign a commitment to Israel”
The author wants every refugee who seeks protection in Germany to sign a document which says that Israel’s security is part of Germany’s reason of state, that Jewish life is promoted in Germany, and that anti-Semitism is not tolerated here. If a refugee refuses to sign such a document or signs it and later violates it, then the refugee should lose protection by the German state.
In his article, the author also conflates being anti-Israel with being anti-Semitic.
