Palestinians are a ‘demographic’ threat to Israel, say leading advocates

Liberal supporters of Israel warn of Jews being overwhelmed by Palestinian births

The “demographic” argument for a two-state solution is the expressed fear that Jews will become a minority in Israel, and so the “Jewish people” will lose a claim to sovereignty.

It is explicitly a racial argument about Jews being overwhelmed by Palestinian births, or voters, and it is one that ought to be very hard to advance in mainstream U.S. forums. The scholar Ian Lustick lately confessed his shame at making the demographic argument for a two-state solution. It was a “deal with the devil,” Lustick said. “My mother would not approve.”

Well– here are two leading American Zionist organizations that consider themselves enlightened but that have recently advanced that unseemly argument.

First, Israel Policy Forum issued a report in February on possible outcomes of the conflict signed by purported liberal Americans – Obama ambassador Dan Shapiro wrote the foreword, Shira Efron and Evan Gottesman wrote the report– that says it is “important” to consider whether Palestinians are becoming a majority in the land between the river and the sea, and in Israel itself, and offered observations of Jewish and Palestinian “fertility” rates as if that’s an acceptable way to look at things.

These liberals warn that even a substantial minority of Palestinians inside Israel will “jeopardize” the country.

Whether and when the Palestinians become a majority is an important question, but Israel’s ability to retain its credentials as a Jewish and democratic state would be jeopardized even if the Palestinians only become a substantial minority. The proposals to annex parts or all of the West Bank, could add 2.6 million Palestinians to Israel’s population. If they become equal citizens, they would command immense political power, making up almost 40% of the population and changing Israel’s Jewish character.

Imagine saying that people of color jeopardize the character of the United States…. What would that make you?

Then this weekend the American Jewish Committee hosted David Horovitz of the Times of Israel for a webtalk in which he explained that he and Benjamin Netanyahu support a Palestinian state if it has no real powers to threaten Israel. And guess what, the threat is not just military but “demographic.”

David Horovitz of the Times of Israel makes the “demographic” argument against Palestinian sovereignty in an American Jewish Committee Zoom webinar on April 26, 2020, with Jason Isaacson, l. Screenshot

A viable two state solution, a secure two-state solution, a two-state solution that does not threaten Israel’s demographic and security interests– I think that should be a goal for us…

I think Netanyahu would say, the problematics of a two state solution is the rigidity of the notion of statehood, and he would argue, If a state for the Palestinians is an entity that cannot threaten us militarily or demographically, you will find me ready to partner the Palestinans toward that kind of state. But he would add the caveat, That the definitions internationally accepted, he would say, are such that — no, I cannot in the forseeable future partner Palestinians to statehood on that basis.”

Horovitz may be saying that partition must be done in such a way that Israel is left with as many Jews and as few Palestinians as possible. More likely, he is talking about the return of refugees to Palestine– that the numbers have to be limited so they don’t overwhelm Israeli Jews numerically.

His argument echoes Jewish leaders of Israel who have long sought a “strong” Jewish majority; and have resorted to ethnic cleansing to achieve that. And by the way, Palestinians already equal or outnumber Jews if you include the occupied territories– about 6.5 million each.

It’s amazing that these arguments are considered kosher. But Israel advocates regularly make them, in liberal American circles! I’ll never forget Ali Abunimah’s speech saying that the biggest threat to Zionism is… Palestinian babies.. Well, the Zionists bear him out.

“Israel may ask for double its usual $3.8 billion from the U.S this year” If Americans Knew Blog, April 26/20
EXCERPT:
“Breaking Defense magazine reports that Israel may ask to get its yearly aid ahead of time, and possibly twice as much as usual… But 26 million Americans out of jobs and U.S. companies closing due to coronavirus might object… A petition proposes: ‘Israel has received over $10 million per day, year after year. This year it’s time to keep our money home.’ By Alison Weir
“Breaking Defense, a digital magazine that covers military issues, reports that Israel may ask for its U.S. aid early, possibly in a lump sum that could be as high as $7.6 billion.This would work out to almost $21 million per day from American taxpayers, even though the U.S. is approaching a $4 trillion deficit (the largest in the world), and Israel typically has a lower unemployment rate than the United states.
“The report is by Breaking Defense Israel correspondent Arie Egozi, an Israeli citizen who served in the Israeli military and is close to the Israeli security establishment.
“Egozi’s article states that because of the coronavirus pandemic, ‘Israel’s Ministry of Defense and high command have hammered out an emergency plan for an appeal to Washington.’
“The article, which carries a Tel Aviv dateline, reports: ‘Sources here say the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing Israel to ask Washington to make major changes to the [aid] agreement, including a request to receive the annual allocation $3.8 billion earlier than planned. “Potentially $14,000 per minute from American taxpayers.”
“… Since the U.S. has been operating at a deficit, this means that the U.S. government borrows the money and pays interest on it long after .”

A Jewish state with a Jewish majority is central to Zionism. If that became off-limits for Zionists to consider that means that Zionism should have to reinvent itself.

Between current Israel, a state with Jewish privileges, and ‘one democratic state’ without a Jewish majority, one has a two state solution with a Jewish majority state (and a Palestinian state) respecting full equality. I have no problem with that, except that if the Green Line becomes the border and there is no substantial Palestinian return, that favours Israel too much.

The “demographic” argument for a two-state solution is the expressed fear that Jews will become a minority in Israel, and so the “Jewish people” will lose a claim to sovereignty. …

Contrary to the insanity-tinged beliefs of Zionists, the choice people make to embrace the religion-based identity of Jewish does not grant to them – individually or as “a people” – the right to be supremacists, to have a supremacist state or to do unto others acts of injustice and immorality (a.k.a. “necessary evil”).

In defence of their insanity-tinged beliefs Zionists have offered arguments based on a combination of:
– whataboutism;
– religion-based beliefs / “myth history”;
– remote or even non-existent ties to a geographic region repeatedly and deliberately misrepresented as an ancient / historic / ancestral / eternal / lost / one true homeland;
– entitlement;
– hypocrisy;
– shameless lying; and
– unabashed f*ck you arrogance.

Disappointingly but quite understandably they have never offered an argument based on justice, accountability, equality, human rights or even basic morality.

Nobody asked Israel to launch the war that started the Occupation. The Occupation destroyed Israeli society. Aoartheid is a shonda.

Should I have thought that touring apartheid South Africa was wrong? Absolutely. Did I know that what was happening there was wrong? I did.

The prime minister of South Africa, PW Botha, clenched tightly to the last remnants of the apartheid system with all of his might, regardless of its cruelty. Paranoia and pain became entrenched in a splintered country that was descending into chaos.

Robbie had seen the segregation on the streets of South Africa the year before as a Lion. He knew the system was abhorrent,

did I actually know how bad apartheid was? Of course, I did. I should never have toured. Despite what I went on to achieve, I consider it a stain that will never leave me.”

You lived in a bubble and you knew it was wrong, but you heard people justifying it as fear from communist Russia. There was a huge amount of propaganda going around and a lot of fear.

remember vividly I was asked to a golf club in Pretoria to hand out awards. In the middle of the evening things got seriously nasty, with threats of violence against me. It was a bad time, especially having to be there with my wife. Years later, I heard from a guy from the club who had been involved and was deeply ashamed of what he had done. I wanted to reach out to have a conversation, but he was too embarrassed.”

Years after apartheid, he met sinister figures such as the notorious former police colonel and assassin Eugene de Kock, nicknamed “Prime Evil”, who was sentenced to 212 years in prison in 1996. De Kock calmly told him that the apartheid-era police had ordered him to assassinate Robbie with a crossbow”

The population of 1948 Israel is now 9.2 million. The Orthodox are the real demographic threat.
Israel is a semi arid country with a religious population that has a very high birthrate and low productivity. Tell me how this ends.
