Big additions to Mondoweiss

We’re thrilled to announce two new hires as we build a newsroom for Palestine: Faris Giacaman as Managing Editor, and Mariam Barghouti as Senior Palestine Correspondent.

Over the last year, we’ve made a conscious commitment to our readers and the entire Palestinian freedom movement: to build a newsroom for all of Palestine.

So we’re thrilled to announce two new hires that move us decisively in that direction.

Please join us in welcoming Faris Giacaman as Managing Editor, and Mariam Barghouti as Senior Palestine Correspondent.

Faris Giacaman is a writer and researcher based in Ramallah and joins Mondoweiss as our Managing Editor. Faris is also a doctoral candidate at New York University in History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies whose work focuses on Palestinian history and politics, social movements, and political economy. His writings have appeared in BabelwadJournal of Palestine StudiesJadaliyyaCatalyst, and other publications.

Mariam Barghouti joins Mondoweiss as our Senior Palestine Correspondent based in Ramallah. She has previously worked as a reporter, researcher and analyst, as well as a Monitoring and Evaluation consultant for various NGOs and iNGOs in the Levant. Her reporting and digital production has appeared in Al-JazeeraMiddle East Eye, and BBC, and her commentary has appeared in the Washington Post, the Guardian, the New York Times, and CNN.

Please help celebrate these incredible journalists by making a $100 donation today – instantly matched up to $50,000 – to make sure Mondoweiss can back their work 100%.

Both Faris and Mariam are incredible, experienced journalists, and we can’t wait for how their work will enrich our collective understanding of life in Palestine and the state of resistance to Israeli oppression.

The Israeli government and its economic, cultural, and political backers here in the US have made a decades-long investment in silencing and delegitimizing Palestinian voices. The effects on public opinion and public policy are devastating.

But we’re building a powerful challenge to those mainstream norms, and proving that listening to Palestinians is essential for moving the needle. In fact, it just might be the single most important step on the long road to justice.

And between now and July 3rd, a generous donor has pledged to match all gifts, up to $50,000, to do just that by building a newsroom for all of Palestine.

When we started in earnest to build out Mondoweiss, we came from a Jewish American perspective, by default if not design. And that’s helped inspire incredible debate among American Jews, and nourished the profound shift in public opinion within our communities about Israeli apartheid and our responsibility to help end it.

That commitment is never going anywhere. In fact, we’d argue that the absence of Palestinan perspectives from those intra-Jewish conversations keeps us trapped in our own self-referential, increasingly paranoid loops.

Because this isn’t a zero sum game. Supporting Palestinian journalism from every corner of the global diaspora is an incredible privilege, and urgent challenge.

This isn’t the end of our staff expansion. And with every new reporter comes a greater need for equipment, travel, and translation to build the audience these stories deserve.

We need your help to do that.

This summer fundraising campaign is going to make a huge difference in how we cover the next big uprisings, the place of Palestinian rights in US politics, and the grassroots movement building an unstoppable campaign for justice.

Please, join us in setting this amazing expanded team up for every success with a generous, instantly matched gift today.
