I met more people this past year working for Mondoweiss than I had in my previous six years working in journalism. In only the past couple of months, I have met hundreds of people, among them those who lost loved ones and were injured during the last Israeli offensive on Gaza.
Dozens of people approach me every place I visit as the Mondoweiss correspondent, each one eager to tell their story.
The intimate details of people’s lives here in Gaza that I am able to bring to you are only shared with me because they know they are talking to one of their own, not a foreign journalist.

In the aftermath of last August’s aggression on Gaza, I produced a detailed memorializing project of the Palestinians martyred in the Israeli attack. This included interviewing many of their families. With my Mondoweiss credentials, I was able to enter the homes of over 70 families directly impacted by the war and who lost one or more family members. I created profiles and included photographs that families shared with me.
I traveled all throughout the Gaza Strip visiting these families. A report like this requires hours of interviewing, fact-checking, translating, and editing. Mondoweiss staff and supporters understand that everyone deserves to be remembered and to have their stories shared.
People feel comfortable sharing their stories with me because I live among them, I’m not only a journalist who will take their story and go. I’m one of them. I hear their stories, uplift them, and show them I care. This is what makes Mondoweiss’s reporting different.
