The Israel-UAE deal is an exchange of veils. Israel’s Apartheid is veiled again, in return for the veil on UAE Israeli cooperation being removed. And the UAE sells out its commitment to Palestinian freedom.
Rep. Betty McCollum has introduced legislation that condemns the Israeli government’s proposed annexation of the West Bank and blocks any U.S. aid that would potentially be used to fund it. The Israeli Annexation Non-Recognition Act is endorsed by over 30 progressive organizations and is cosponsored by six other Democratic House members.
The normalization of relations between the UAE and Israel, facilitated by the U.S., serves to prop up three repressive leaders — Trump, Netanyahu, and bin Zayed — and will cause further harm to Palestinians. It is both a shame and a sham.
Jared Kushner got a diplomatic coup today. But Israel remains committed to annexation of the West Bank, the Israeli press is reporting, notwithstanding the historic deal between the UAE and Israel to normalize relations.
Trump reportedly berated Sheldon Adelson for not giving more millions to his flagging campaign. That’s good news. Trump is less likely to deliver to Adelson, and nuke Iran. Not that the New York Times even explores the foreign policy ramifications of the report.
It has been one month since Israel’s unofficial July 1st deadline to annex the West Bank passed. According to data gathered by Mondoweiss from local Palestinian news reports, from July 1st to the 31st, there were at least 25 reported incidents of Israeli settlers attempting to seize Palestinian land, setting up new outposts, attacking Palestinians, vandalizing Palestinian homes, mosques, and vehicles, and burning down Palestinian crops and agricultural lands.
The American Jewish community should make Peter Beinart a “pariah” just like Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar; because like a Holocaust denier, he has questioned a “fundament of Jewish history,” the fact that 2000 years show Jews can’t be safe unless they have sovereignty and control their own destiny. So says Israeli author Daniel Gordis.
Rob Malley says that the young Democrats are pushing an “inflection point” on U.S. policy in Israel/Palestine, questioning pro-Israel policy now that the peace process has “failed.” And Peter Beinart sensed this generational moment, and jumped, his editor says.
Every poll on conditioning aid to Israel shows that the Democratic establishment is completely out of step with the people who actually vote for them.
