Thoughtful people around the globe are awaking to the vengeful spirit and actions of the Israeli government, and they are aroused to unprecedented demonstrations and actions and prayers. They act knowing that our friends and colleagues in Gaza are subject to unending plagues and a nightmare of force very few of us have experienced.
Liberal Zionists rushed to affirm their support for Israel and hatred of anti-Zionism in the wake of Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s “racist state” comment because they are afraid the Israel lobby will abandon the Democratic party in 2024 and big donors will go over to the GOP or sit the campaign out.
The Jewish communal reality is that all the members of Jewish congregations across the world, Zionists and non-Zionists alike, adhere to the uniform code of silencing: “Thou Shalt not oppose Israel’s War on the Palestinians in the Jewish Community”. Jews are allowed to question Israel privately but are required to remain silent in public, Jewish spaces. That’s the price of admittance that even nonZionists must pay to be included in a Jewish congregation. Selfcensorship is not sufficient. In addition to self-censorship, members are required to join in enforcing that censorship on all others.
In a highwater mark of mainstream opposition to the unending Israeli occupation, 50 members of Congress have signed a letter to Secretary of State Blinken urging him to try to stop Israel’s demolition of 38 Palestinian houses in al-Walaja, a village in the occupied West Bank, because the demolitions will undermine “Palestinian dignity” and “long-term Israeli security.” The demolitions are also an issue in a Michigan congressional race between two Democrats, with Rep. Andy Levin calling them “unjust.”
Amnesty International USA Executive Director Paul O’Brien is being attacked by lawmakers for saying Israel “shouldn’t exist as a Jewish state.” 25 Jewish Congressmen put out a statement condemning the remarks as allegedly antisemitic. O’Brien “has added his name to the list of those who, across centuries, have tried to deny and usurp the Jewish people’s independent agency, the statement reads.
Republicans are trying to paint Democrats as the anti-Israel party. Not to worry. Rep. Jan Schakowsky sounded a lot like an old segregationist when she said that equal rights for Palestinians is a bad thing. In one state, “equal rights and equal votes for all” would mean that “in short order the Jewish population would be in the minority, and Israel as a Jewish state would cease to exist.”
Members of Jewish Voice for Peace, American Friends Service Committee, and other constituents occupied the office of Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL 9th District) and called on her to support a congressional bill that promotes human rights for children in Palestine. The protesters read a list of 271 Palestinian children who have been arrested and detained by the Israeli military, as well as a list of the 8 children killed in Israel’s recent attack on Gaza.
Asked, “will you actually hold Israel accountable for its continued human rights violations?” Senator Elizabeth Warren affirmed the two-state solution and criticized Netanyahu. A leftwinger on economic justice issues, Warren is echoing a safe Democratic Party consensus, clearly fearful that the issue could divide the party’s base.
