H.R. 2748 is the Israel Relations Normalization Act of 2021. It just passed the House of Representatives and the Senate last week. It expands the Abraham Accords, Trump-era weapons and business deals between apartheid Israel and other authoritarian regimes. These deals bribe Arab countries in the region to both ignore Israel’s settler colonialism and constant human rights violations. When we hear the phrases Normalizing and Israel, we should always read Normalizing Israel’s impunity and violence.

The world is justly alarmed by the treatment of Ukrainian civilians under Russian occupation. It should also pay heed to the Palestinian experience of Israeli military occupation in Hebron, where schoolchildren are detained at checkpoints and stun grenades hurled at journalists. The Campaign to Defund Racism, a broad coalition of Palestinian organizations and international allies, has called for our international supporters to challenge the laws that allow charities to underwrite our dispossession and erasure.

As Israelis were evacuated from Jewish-only communities in the Galilee due to fires this month, Hatim Kanaaneh reflects, “Are you aware that within recent memory your own residential locales had Palestinian names and were inhabited by humans, some of whom with features not really different from your own and who were before their expulsion actually part of the best educated nation in the Middle East? They lived right where you live now but without all those fire-hazardous pines.”
