The Globe reports that the ADL fired its regional director in New England over his statements calling for an acknowledgment of Armenian genocide. And Foxman states in his letter "explaining" the decision that the security of Israel is paramount.
Ergo, we lie and cover up another people’s suffering. What was I saying about free speech in the Jewish community? What was I saying about the demands the Jewish state has made on Jewish identity?
Foxman has a book coming out that is meant to anticipate and de legitamize "The Israel Lobby" before it comes out. Looks like this is going to make that alot harder for him.
Lester, got a question, personally I'm not a fan of the ADL. They soft pedal Islamic anti-semitism and are more liberal than Jewish but lets leave that aside for a second. How did a genocide, carried out by Turkish MOSLEMS, against Armenian CHRISTIANS, become the fault of the JEWS. Explain that one to me, looking forward to it.

bill- what mr burns said. no one is implying any jewish collusion in the actual act of genocide. the controvesey is over Foxmans willingness to lobby for turkey's effort to deny it happened. most normal people see this as hypocritical.

Not exactly the fault of ethnic Ashkenazim, but a large part of the organized Jewish community is trying to use the Armenian genocide as part of a program to control genocide discourse and to incite Islamophobia.

It's not only for political reasons (the goodwill of Turkey) that Isarel and its Jewish lobby like the ADL shy away from condemning the Armenian genocide – it's for traditional religious reasons also. According to this tradition, the Armenians are the decendants – via Haman – of the Amalek whom God ordered the Jews to "blot them out from the face of the earth". The Turks did the right thing – in this traditional view. We have to remember that genocide is at the origin of biblical Israel. It's among God's 613 commandments to his chosen people.

Just read the Globe op/ed by Rachel Kaprielian and Alan Dershowitz. I'm less of a fan of Dershowitz than is Phil, but it is well written. Dershowitz wouldn't be out there with this unless there are some powerful people pissed at Foxman. I predicted in a comment to an earlier thread that this might be Abe's "last song," but there's more here than has somehow yet met the eye. Some sort of factional fight going on…
Dersh badly needs to fix his image of a killer's savior and torture advocate and this is a perfect gesture for him. It cost him nothing and it will lead nowhere because preserving the implied exclusivity in "Victims R us" status strategically important for ADL. Bill, my Dad spent all 4 years at 3d Bileorussian Front fighting Nazis. He is one of the rare non-officers who was awarded the "Glory Order" for outstanding courage personally by General Tchernyakovsky and other medals and orders. One of them for taking Koenigsberg. Same with my Granddad and even my Grandmother both of whom fought Nazis as medical doctors, Granddad finished war as full Colonel and Grammother as Lieutenant Colonel and both took part in the final Battle for Berlin.

Dershowitz is probably a bit more adept at catching the 'party line' than Foxman. The recent Islamic victory in Turkey spells potential trouble for Israel and the US. Hence the sudden concern for what happened 92 years ago.
I don't know whether Foxman will suffer from his lack of vigilance, as did those characters in the erstwhile Soviet Union who did not catch the latest signs from on high quickly enough and found themselves suddenly dispatched to the Gulag.

Wow. Did some research on this. Over 00,000 Armenains fought the Nazis, half died doing so, one quarter were captured and imprisoned in Nazi POW camps that rivaled concentration camps in death rates and of those desperate POWs 15,000 or so were drafted into the Werhmacht Armenian legions. Even so the Armenains "volunteers" were so mistrusted by the Nazis that they were shipped to Holland and this makes for the ADL and AJC spinmiesters Armenian collaboration?!? What the heck!
