Nakba Commemoration Builds; Barenboim to Shun Israel’s 60th Birthday Party

by Philip Weiss on March 28, 2008 · 10 comments

When I began collecting string on Jews calling for Nakba commemoration, I thought it was statistically aberrant behavior. Wrong. There is a real groundswell upon us. Ynet reports that Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim will shun festivities surrounding Israel’s 60th birthday because it commemorates a period of terrible suffering for the Palestinian people. Add this to the No Time to Celebrate petition among Jews, Hannah Mermelstein writing "It was their land first" in the Jewish Advocate, Australian Jews signing on to a giant Nakba ad–well, it’s a real trend. And it’s only going to get bigger.

Again I say, this shows the power of ideas. The Palestinian people have known about the Nakba for 60 years. It took intellectuals, the New Historians, to bring these ideas to the west…

Phil:

That petition has about 100 signatures from Jews worldwide–a number that has increased from about 95 when you first mentioned it.The only place "Nakba" is ever mentioned outside of Palestinian circles is this blog!
Groundswell?

Google has 325,000 entries on the word 'Nakba'.

David, I didnt know that about the petition. When I first saw it it had 20 signatures. I accept that 100 signatures is not a Ton, and that I am a dreamer; but doesn't it mean something that the petition is out there? Isnt it indicative along with other events of a trend? Phil

The statement, 'The only place "Nakba" is ever mentioned outside of Palestinian circles is this blog,' is a considerable exaggeration.

Demand that the USHMM start talking about the Nakba (I prefer Holoexaleipsis — the Great Erasing)along with the Holocaust.

The USHMM never mentions that many Jewish scholars of the 20s and 30s predicted that Jewish involvement with Soviet Communism and Zionist genocidalism would create hatred of unimaginable proportions.

At the behest of Jewish racists, terrorist Zionists, rapacious Friedmanites and murderous Neocons, the USHMM is already attempting to incite an invasion of the Sudan (If you like Iraq, you will love Sudan).

Just take a look at http://eaazi.blogspot.com/2008/03/ushmm-national-thought-control.html .

If only there were more like Daniel Barenboim. He and Edward Said held music camps for israeli and palestinian youth. This was a beautiful answer to the misunderstandings and fear that exist between two peoples. Teach the children!!

I don't think that the world is ignorant of the fact that the Palestinians have been brutalized, or that their land was stolen. Holocaust guilt, threats of anti-Semitism and personal destruction, religious blinders, and other reasons can account for the silence on the issue.

I think that most people understand what has happened, but don't care until it really affects them- as it obviously does now.

Less than 24 hours later, the number of signatures is 240.

Didn't find any Phil Weiss unfortunately (c'mon Phil!)

Are those signing all really Jews?
