Marty Peretz turns 70 today and says: Samantha Power said some erroneous things about Israel and then they talked. He explained the national romantic struggle of the Jewish people to her in Irish terms. Guess what: She "truly truly loves" Israel. She's like Maud Gonne (I like that).
Power on Peretz, in A Problem from Hell: "Martin Peretz, whose New Republic had given me a voice during the Bosnia war and given U.S. policy-makers an appropriately difficult time, helped convince Basic Books to publish [this book]." A real debt. Six years old. Who has more power now. I say: Sampo. The lobby always blesses the rising people as a way of keeping its hooks in, as Peretz blessed Obama, and as Dershowitz took credit for kicking Carter down the stairs. Machiavellian.
It's amazing how bald Peretz's lovesong to Israel is. When you're 70 everything else boils off, I guess. I'll be a pure assimilationist by then, mixing the Talmud's rule that you feed your dogs first with my wife's India stuff. Israel Israel Israel; some day we will marvel at this. That one of the most powerful editors in Washington only cares about Israel. No wonder John Judis, one of Peretz's employees, said that there is "dual loyalty" all over the Jewish leadership. It's changing by the minute. Dersh and Peretz are both 70. Norm Finkelstein is 54 and fit.

Wishful thinking. And the Irish are the most anti-Israel people in Europe.
Yeah, I can remember the Irish Times quoting Yitzhak's Shamir's line to the Palestinians: "you are as grasshoppers before us."
Or Y. RABIN'S promise to break the bones of the Plestinians youth in the West bank. (Promise kept, I guess).
Yeah, that was really irresponsible journalism. It would have been ok for Haaretz to say it. But the Irish?
In his unauthorized bio, Beckett is quoted as saying that he "could not have gone on living…in this awful wrethed mess.. without having left a stain upon the silence."
Yeah, the Irish Times should conform itself to our establishment: no comment or stain should be uttered about Jewish ethnocentrism.
Maybe because your endless victim fiddle whines a little too sharp over in Ollie Cromwell's old stomping grounds?
Actually, SOG, I was just compiling a list of the most anti-Semitic kitchen appliances currently used in America today. I feel like this list is long overdue.
Could you help me out? I got:
Blenders – The assimilationist appliance. They don't respect the right of a foodstuff to remain pure.
Toasters – I look at mine and can only think, Treblinka
Silverware – This is about stereotypes, you know? People think just because it's silver that it must be wealthy. That's fucked up.
George Foreman Grill – He had a chance to defeat a popular Muslim and he couldn't do it — the question is, why?
Kitchen Clock – Have you ever been to The Sands? Clocks (and windows) are part of a massive conspiracy against Sheldon Adelson's revenue stream.
Ovens – So many turkeys do you have to roast before it's considered henocide?
Israelis and Palestinians can draw three vital lessons from the Irish case: keep alive the hope of a negotiated settlement, do not let the Jewish settlers stay in a future Palestinian state and welcome international mediation and intervention. link to bitterlemons-international.org
PS: SOG: Facts to support your slur on the European Irish? Do you mean they are the most vocal in terms of public statements not rubber-stamping Israeli policies and their implementation?
Do you think they know nothing of being historical victims over centuries?
SRINAGAR, India (AP) – Security officials say one of two Indians arrested for illegally buying mobile phone cards used by the gunmen in the Mumbai attacks is a counter-insurgency police officer who may have been on an undercover mission …
Wishful thinking. And the Irish are the most anti-Israel people in Europe.
I protest! Loads of evidence that it is us and not the Irish. Have you already forgotten?
Kraut
Rosner is a dope. Yeats might have thought that he and Gonne were lovers but that would have been news to her.
And Gonne is hardly the evidence to bring to an argument of fellow feeling between Celt and Jew.
She was an anti-semite of the Wagnerian mold.
For SOG, on Ireland's one and only pogrom in all of its history, and what motivated it (including of course, Jewish sharp business practices): link to ucc.ie
As far as I can tell, Sampo has never found a Jewish-planned or Jewish-committed mass murder, or ethnic cleansing that she did not love.

“It is no longer my country” – Rivka Michaeli
“For me, this business called the state of Israel is finished…I can’t bear to
see it anymore, the injustice that is done to the Arabs, to the Beduins. All
kinds of scum coming from America and as soon as they get off the plane
taking over lands in the territories and claiming them for their own… I can’t do anything to change it. I can only go away and let the whole lot go to hell without me.” Israeli actress (and household name) Rivka Michaeli, quoted in Israeli peace movement periodical, “The Other Israel”, August 1998
OK Dickerson, this time you've gone too far! Calling Rivka Michaeli a "household name" is true only if you live in a household that worships talentless fools. Have you ever seen Rivka? Are you aware that she never left Israel?
Moti the Real Israeli (only one here?)
– soon it'll be
Moti the Real Israeli (only one left?)
tel aviv seems to still be full of people who think they can piss in the world's eyes:
ElBaradei’s words were flatly disregarded in Jerusalem. “His record as head of the IAEA is one of resounding failures,” one diplomatic official said. “His opinion is interesting, but it is the opinion of someone who has announced he will retire and, as he said in the interview, has bought a home in the south of France. His opinion now is no more significant than that of the man on the street.” The official said that ElBaradei would be judged by the fact that during his tenure Syria, Libya, North Korea and Iran all had nuclear programs. “The IAEA failed in all four cases,” the official said. “The problems in Libya and North Korea were solved by a process led by the Americans, and in Syria, someone else needed to do the work,” he said, alluding to the IAF attack on an alleged nuclear installation there in 2007. In light of those failures, the official said, and since ElBaradei has admitted in the past that his organization failed in Iran, “questions must be raised abut his job and the role of the IAEA.”
"She "truly truly loves" Israel."
I really can't understand how anyone could 'truly truly love' Israel, unless by way of deep ethnic chauvinism in favour of jews and against arabs. You might just about think that a two-state solution is all that is possible on pragmatic grounds, or support some aspects of Israeli policy for one reason or another. But to 'truly truly love' Israel is like 'truly truly loving' French Algeria.
I could understand it if it was said in the spirit of, for instance, "I truly truly love science fiction."
Put another way, what are they 'loving' other than jewish chauvinism, which is the outstanding characteristic of the place?
As in science fiction – the bold perspectives, the mind bending distortions of 'normality', the precipice of the imagination …
I filled in some more material on SAMPO (and Martha Minow — MARMI?) in here.
I have not succeeding in getting linkbacks to Phil's blog to work. Anyone have any ideas?
The lodestone of the Arendt industry is The Origins of Totalitarianism, published in 1951 and reissued by Schocken in 2004 with an introduction by Samantha Power.
I bought a copy (presumably the 2004 Schocken edition) of "Origins of Totalitarianism" and read it, last year, but I don't recall that there was anything in the introduction that was worthy of note. What I found striking about the book was the defective, incoherent nature of Arendt's account of modern European and world-colonial history, completely ignoring Freemasonry, a major social, economic and political force, and one which should have interested her greatly given her professed concerns, so that one can only assume that erasing the traces of Freemasonry from the popular American Jewish liberal account of modernity was the main purpose behind her employment as court historian to the Rothschilds (or whoever it was).
Of all the co-optations of Arendt for contemporary political purposes, none is more outrageous than the parallel, drawn by Power and others, between Palestinian militants and the Nazis. Arendt firmly rejected that analogy (in a 1948 letter to the Jewish Frontier), and few of the protagonists in the struggle over Palestine so reminded her of the Nazis as the Zionists themselves, particularly those of the Revisionist tendency, whose influence Arendt was among the first to notice.

Indeed she did, but this is merely because she had become a left liberal imperialist hawk. 'Left liberals' are a breed we are seeing a recrudescence of inside the Beltway of Shame right now. They take great pride in hanging onto their liberal notions of individual freedom from state interference, which means that they are unable to comprehend any governmental policies whatever, anywhere in the world, but see them all in the mythologised terms of 'man versus the state'.
