Horrifying, world-changing events always have an upside. Gaza has shown Americans, as never before, the mature power of Arab journalists. Their voices are in our media to stay. Three examples. Here is the Washington Post's Abdel Kareem's stirring report on the killings of civilians in Gaza City:
"It was horrible," said Shifaa Samuni, 70, who was detained in the
family's house but fled with her grandson Monday afternoon after the
killings. She said two of her sons and three daughters-in-law were
among the dead.
"Look how much I lost," she said at al-Quds Hospital, where she was
receiving treatment for minor injuries, including wounds to her hands.
"Why? We did nothing. We are a peaceful family."
Here is AP man Ibrahim Barzak's incredible description of the destruction of his apartment and all the governing complexes he has worked in, and his father before him, in Gaza City.
Here is Ahmed Abu Hamda a producer for NPR, not holding back in his observations, on radio in Volvos and Subarus and BMWs across this great country:
I'll tell you something, my dear. Now in my flat, I'm not safe, OK?
If I go out, I'm not safe. I will choose the less threat. For example,
I had to go to the Shifa Hospital while I knew it might be risky. But
why I went there? I am a Palestinian citizen who live in Gaza Strip. In
such a crisis, I need money to bring food for my family. I have to risk
my life to provide this food for my wife, for my family. This is how we
are living here.
MICHELLE BLOCK: When you were at the hospital yesterday, who were the wounded and the killed whom you saw there?
Mr.
HAMDA: Honestly, most of what I saw were kids, women, some young guys.
But I stayed there for almost like two and a half hours, I didn't see
one single militant.

More and more Americans are becoming aware
of the catastrophe in Gaza thanks to the
internet, but there is little likelihood of
change from a president-elect who is completely beholden to Zionist interests; those who doubt this should read the article
by James Petras on Obama as our first Jewish
president.
KABUL, Jan 8 (Reuters) – More than a thousand Afghans signed up on Thursday to say they wanted to go and fight Israel in the Gaza Strip, many of them blaming the United States which has some 30,000 troops in Afghanistan, for supporting the Jewish state. … "The acts of Israel against the innocent Muslims of Gaza are barbaric and inhumane and widely helped by the Americans," Assam said.
Keep an eye on these guys in case they get 'disappeared'.
HORRIBLE NEWS:
Senate Approves Resolution Backing Israel in Hamas ConflicT–in UNANIMOUS VOTE
Jan. 8 (Bloomberg) — The U.S. Senate unanimously approved a resolution expressing support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas, while the House of Representatives prepared to act on a similar measure tomorrow.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said the measure “expresses vigorous support” for Israel.
“The Israelis have every right to defend themselves against these acts of terrorism,” said Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Call your Representative now at 202-224-3121 and tell them to vote "NO" on H.Res.34 and instead support UN Security Council Resolution 1860 which calls for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access. Earlier this morning, the House of Representative debated this resolution "recognizing Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza" but has yet to vote on it. To watch the debate, click here and then on the segment that begins with Rep. Berman at 9:15am. Congress is expected to vote on the resolution later today, so call now.

There is also no chance for change as long as both the Senate and House pass resolutions supporting Israel(see AIPAC site) all the while spouting how much they care about civilians….Only Kucinich and Paul given reasoned arguments with Ellison trying…How can Obama hope to do anything when Berman, Ackerman, Engel, Harmon, Berkeley, Hoyer, Pelosi all support Israel in their rampage. The concentration camp is protected by the U.S. Congress.
The House voted for Israel's Slaughter of Palestinians:
Dem Yes 216 No 4 Pres 23 NV 13
Repub 168 1 9
We might as well send the Statue of Liberty back to France. Disgusting cowardice.
The US is realigning, but all the politicians in power are on the wrong side of the realignment. How about a new party of Kucinich, Paul, Ellison, McKinney?
Sorry, the numbers rearranged themselves above:
Dem Yes: 216
Dem No: 4
Dem Present: 23
Dem NV: 13
Repub Yes: 168
Repub No: 1
Repub NV: 8
This proves that the United States and Israel are the only one with the guts to stand up to the aggressive posturing of Islamic states all over the world.
Iran's own president has called for the destruction of Israel. Who's next?
And you call this bad news? You guys are Apologists for Hatred.
Ben, Ben, all it signifies is that Palestinian lives have no value to the
American Congress. Nothing has changed since Truman recognized
Israel because he needed Jewish support to win the election, or as Truman himself said, "How many Arabs are part of my constituency?" (& where else can I get my whistle stop tour financed?) At the time,
Dewey was thought a shoo-in.
delia,
I, too was surprised by the piece by Heer in the National Post, an Asper/Canwest paper of all places.
And I was appalled by an editorial in the Globe earlier this week that characterised Israel's actions in Gaza as "moderate". This from Canada's leading newspaper?
The snippets of CBC radio coverage on the War on Gaza (tm Al Jazeera) I've heard have been pretty tepid.
I would be curious to know more about about how the WoG and the Occupation generally are covered in the MSM there. Is it as bad as States or Australia?
