From the Ha'aretz article "World takes dim view of Lieberman in FM post":
"The 'Lieberman question' continually arises in State Department briefings for journalists and in other forums. And opinion columns in the American press have presented Lieberman in an extremely negative light, with comparisons to Austria's Joerg Haider and even Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, (both use "ultranationalist rhetoric of hate," one paper charged).
"No American official is likely to convene a press conference publicly condemning Lieberman's appointment. However, such a choice will almost certainly encourage the U.S. administration to keep its distance from Benjamin Netanyahu's government, as Washington will not want to take the flak absorbed by demonstrating closeness to a government whose public face is widely considered to be a racist."
Personally, I can't get enough of that Lieberman photo. We might have to hold the first Mondoweiss caption contest. It reminds me of one of my favorite Kids in the Hall sketches.

The Kids in the Hall! Now that takes you back.
Lieberman is truly a blessing in disguise for the anti-lobby crowd. I sure hope he becomes FM and stays there.
Funny! After being conditioned from youth to run screaming from right-nationalism (racist! fascist! Nazi! Badthink!) Americans finally figure out that Zionism is…duhhh…ethnic nationalism!
I guess they were okay with settlements, ethnic cleansing, etc. as long as Israeli leaders didn't use "ultranationalist rhetoric of hate!"
Posting on here is still a total pain in the butt if you use FireFox with NoScript, which is otherwise an extremely good idea, because it gives you an easy and permanent way to tailor all your favourite sites so that they do not display unwanted adverts. In addition, I am now using a snazzy Linux laptop (ubuntu, if any is interested), which makes everything fiddlier.
The interesting thing about Lieberman is that if he doesn't push for legal secular marriage his electorate will crucify him (ha ha). Shas want this only to apply to "non-Jewish" Russian Israelis, but it won't be simple, will it?
I have difficulty rooting for Lieberman's inclusion in the government. True it may very well expose to the American people the true nature of the Zionist state, but it could also result in incalcuble suffering and death for the Palestinians. Isn't that too heavy a price to say we were right all along?
Syvanen—you're mistaking the anti-semites here for people who genuinely care about Palestinians. News flash: they don't.
Good point, David.
Lieberman reminds me of Mr. Szabo my grade school photographer. "Look at my hand, Todd." Flash.
"Syvanen—you're mistaking the anti-semites here for people who genuinely care about Palestinians. News flash: they don't."
That's a howler, Suzanne! Not only are we anti-Semites, but we don't care about Palestinians, either. Well, I have a hard time personally caring for people that I don't know. However, I root for the Palestinians, and hate what the Israelis have done to them because I know it's wrong. But my major concern is that America isn't harmed or scammed by it's attachment to Israel, which is what really bothers you.
Exactly how much do you care for the Palestinians? Please inform us!
Hehe, I love 'Kids in the Hall'. Mr. Lieberman, don't put salt in your eye!
Lieberman is a convicted child-beater:

Olmert is corrupt. Katsav is a rapist. With Gaza – they are all murderers too. ("But those kids deserved it!" their defenders scream.) Maybe there's a place for pedophiles in the government too.
@ Suzanne
You seem to have forgotten that the comment policy does not approve of name calling because personal insults disrupt the free flow of ideas necessary for informed citizens. Please address the issues presented by comments, rather than pretend to know the character of any commenter. Thanks.
only a phool would single me out with that request and ignore everyone else.
I suppose the phool thinks I'm going to oblige?
Next!
Looking through the comments on this thread, I don't see anyone else tossing out personal insults–only you Suzanne. Who did Respect ignore?
"Personally, I can't get enough of that Lieberman photo. We might have to hold the first Mondoweiss caption contest."
First caption, "How big is the intellect of Phil's phools?" Or "How large is the morality of Phil's Phools?" or "What are the chances that Phil's phools are correect in their stance?".
Any of those will do.
Jim, the charges against Katsav are apparently 'blood libel': link to haaretz.com
It's almost a textbook case of using alleged anti-semitism to excuse the worse possible things.
As for pedophiles, maybe there is a place for Abraham Mondrowitz in Israeli government.
Somebody needs to video cam all that stall activity at the bottom of the stall door. I bet the hand and foot signals are the same in Israel as they are over here.
When one Jew accuses another Jew of "blood libel" for accusing a third Jew of rape, there is a certain inevitable devaluation of the phrase.
Re: Lieberman photo
The degeneracy of many highly ethnocentric and mean-spirited Jews can easily be glimpsed in their very ugly, mean looking, and distorted faces.
Physiognomy is a re-emerging practice, with many aspects of it now being proven by hard science: link to newscientist.com
Conversely, many genuinely good-natured Jews, and especially those that convert to other religions or assimilate fully by intermarriage with non-Jews, are often much more attractive than the very ethnocentric and supremacist super Jews – thus the fact that these genuinely good Jews (the converts or assimilationists) are becoming less Jewish can be seen in their much less ugly and less distorted faces.
Phil. I am unable to access comments to read what others are saying. it's been more than a couple of days. At first I thought the site was deluged, but now I think that intense debate is the problem. It's not that I have anything significant to say, but I do want to follow the conversation. Jim byers
ps i just posted this and it says i posted 1 hour ago. huh
keep up the good work phil….im loving the way your community is going through this awakening…..although it seems to be moslty happening among the more worldly….the regular guy on the street are still in la la land. it is stil amazing to see how your regular american journalist is still stifled by the unseen hand…noone major in the journalistic community that appears daily on tv has yet taken on the israel lobby issue. i cant wait…this is like a good movie or a concert….just waiting for the crescendo.
