In Israel, Hillary Clinton said that Israeli demolition of Palestinian houses in Jerusalem is "unhelpful." Wow. Step out, lady! How long will it take for her to condemn the confiscation of Palestinian lands, the colonies, Jim Crow laws, and the destruction of houses in Gaza?
The great Rachel Corrie died at 23 trying to prevent a house demolition in Rafah, in the Gaza Strip, six years ago this month. In this photo, her mother Cindy stands with her photograph.

@Phil: I saw you on Press TV last night! Good to be able to put a face to a blogger for once…
House demolitions are "unhelpful"… No shit, Hillary! Don't mince your worlds, doll!
No wonder Hamas claim they're not detecting much of a change in Washington's attitude… I guess to them that kind of statement must sound "not very helpful".
Now it's just waiting for the hasbara trolls to launch a shitstorm over 'pancake Corrie'…

Minor hiccups with the comment section here: this one may double-publish…
"The Guardian" has two headlines:
"Clinton Attacks Israeli Homes Plan"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/
"Clinton condemns Israel's demolition of Arab East Jerusalem homes"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/mar/04/hillary-clinton-israel-settlements
Sad how the very mildest of reproofs are depicted as massive condemnations.
Yes, March 16, 2003. The Clintons home should be demolished.
Does anyone seriously expect anything more from a woman just who hired Jewish Zionist Dennis Ross as a special advisor on the Gulf and Iran? Remember, this is the same Dennis Ross who, according to a member of the negotiating team, acted as "Israel's lawyer" during talks with the Palestinians when he was a Middle East envoy for the Clinton administration. He also recently chaired the Jerusalem-based Jewish People Policy Planning Institute, which may have received funding from the Israeli government. The man is basically an agent for Israel.
All of which begs the question: why would Hillary appoint such a person to such a sensitive position, particularly given the current Iran situation? Obviously, the Clintons are still smoothing the way for Israel’s cat’s paws, but why? Could it have to do with all that Jewish Zionist money that the Democrats take in? Could that be the explanation behind Obama’s hiring of Jewish Zionist Rahm Emanuel, who has a pro-Zionist track record as long as Ross’, as his chief of staff? No…you think?
Sec. Mrs. William Jefferson Clinton-Lieberman's rhetoric is unhelpful.
Marc Reich, where are u? Oh, right, where else?
Ed, you're spot on about Jewish Zionist money. It's ALWAYS about the money. If Hillary has any future plans for elected office again she will not do or say anything that remotely shuts off the spigot of money from Jewish donors. And I think she has such plans. As a result, the strongest statement we can expect from her on settlements, Israeli moves to the right, Lieberman, etc is: "It's unhelpful." Translation to Likudniks on both sides of the ocean: She's still our girl.
As for Hamas, how can she possibly say with a straight face that it's not a legitimate government? It was elected by the people. The US may not like it, but it was elected freely and fairly. Judging from the same tired old rhetoric she threw out that Hamas must recognize Israel, renounce violence, yada, yada, yada, Hillary is only keeping the lid tight on the bottle of formaldehyde that Ariel Sharon created that contains the peace process, or what's left of it.
Phil,
You praised George Mitchell's selection. That was HILLARY's voice.
Her presence, her non-silent voice, can make some change. Do you want change, or would you prefer non-involvement?
@ seethelight: "If Hillary has any future plans for elected office again she will not do or say anything that remotely shuts off the spigot of money from Jewish donors."
The same can be said for most Democrats and many Republicans. In a corrupt system where everything is for sale, including politicians, he with the most money wins. In the case of the Jewish Zionists, its blood money, but Washington doesn't care; it's still green. These pathetic addicts are going to have to be dragged kicking and screaming from the Zionist needle and flushed into the Washington sewers where they belong.
@Phil
Go look at the actual footage of Rachel Corrie's death (it's not graphic, it is from a distance). She wasn't protecting a house, she was in a fairly open area. The "protecting a house" was something the ISM faked with photoshopped pictures.
Thom's right, that bulldozer wasn't going to destroy a house, it was going to till the Palestinians' fields for them. Good catch, Thom.
Thom, you are mistaken. I have spent a great deal of time studying the video the IDF supplied to the U.S. State Dept. of the time around Rachel's death. Unfortunately, the Pascal camera turned away from the site several minutes before Rachel's death so the bulldozer running over her is not on film. This would be the same time period when a change in orders was received by the soldiers- that they were to proceed with their operation and not let the activists stop them, no matter what. Five minutes before her death there is IDF provided footage of Rachel in front of the Nasrallah home. I am not sure what footage you are looking at but the tape provided by the IDF to the State Dept. clearly shows the Nasrallah home. Your confusion may stem from the fact that the Israelis tried to portray Rachel's death as occuring on the Philadelphi Road – over which they held jurisdiction per Oslo. However, it occurred over 100 meters into Palestinian territory – in fact in the buffer zone area that Human Rights Watch so clearly identified in their "Razing Rafah" paper. You might want to watch Sandra Jordan's "The Killing Zone" if you are truly interested in seeing Rachel's death spot in relation to the house. Unfortunately, the IDF returned shortly after her death and bulldozed all tracks and unfortunately, the IDF investigators never returned to the site to do any investigation.
Code Pink is on their way to Gaza and Rachel's parents are in the delegation. Democracy Now, I believe, is following the event. When Rachel was in Gaza she was involved with trying to plan an International Women's Day activity with women of the area. According to Common Dreams, Alice Walker, the Corries and the great women of Code Pink are traveling to Gaza to celebrate International Women's Day.
Dear Friends,
March 16th, the 6th anniversary of Rachel Corrie's death, is just a few weeks away.
For those of you who wish to mark the day, there are many resources available.
The Royal Court Theatre (who originally produced My Name Is Rachel Corrie) has released a new play written in response to the attack on Gaza. Seven Jewish Children is a dialogue between adults over the generations about what to tell their children. Playwright Caryl Churchill has indicated that this is an open source document and anyone can stage a production or reading, with the sole caveat that a collection for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is taken up in lieu of entrance charge.
"Caryl Churchill's 10-minute play was written in response to the recent tragic events in Gaza. It…confirms theatre's ability to react more rapidly than any other art form to global politics….[and] suggests that Israeli children are subject to a barrage of contradictory information about past and present…What she captures, in remarkably condensed poetic form, is the transition that has overtaken Israel, to the point where security has become the pretext for indiscriminate slaughter. Avoiding overt didacticism, her play becomes a heartfelt lamentation for the future generations who will themselves become victims of the attempted military suppression of Hamas." ––Michael Billington, The Guardian
Rachel's Words and Theaters Against War will be co-hosting a reading of the Seven Jewish Children on Monday, March 16th at 8 PM, at the Brecht Forum in Manhattan. Broadway luminary Kathleen Chalfant along with Brian Jones and other special guests will be reading.
Rachel's Words has all of Rachel Corrie's emails from Gaza, translated into 6 languages, on our website. We also have DVD's of Channel 4 London's Dispatches: The Killing Zone. This can also be found online, along with many videos taken recently in Gaza. Erasing the Palestinians of Gaza is a trailer from a production by filmmaker Alberto Arce; he was on the last voyage of the DIGNITY that got into Gaza, and was there during the recent invasion. (The video is in Spanish and Arabic, but easily understood by anyone.)
The U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation has called for an action to thank President Obama for not including military aid to Israel in the US budget. Rachel's father, Craig Corrie, delivered a message to President Obama in an interview by Laura Flanders on Blink TV. Please read, view and forward! And send us any resources you've found useful in planning your events.
Thank you to all who helped us get computer and video equipment to Rafah, it was successfully delivered and is being used now. We still have expenses to cover and appreciate your continued support.
“…Just want to write to my Mom and tell her that I'm witnessing this chronic, insidious genocide and I'm really scared, and questioning my fundamental belief in the goodness of human nature. This has to stop. I think it is a good idea for us all to drop everything and devote our lives to making this stop. I don't think it's an extremist thing to do anymore. I still really want to dance around to Pat Benatar and have boyfriends and make comics for my coworkers. But I also want this to stop. Disbelief and horror is what I feel. Disappointment. I am disappointed that this is the base reality of our world and that we, in fact, participate in it. This is not at all what I asked for when I came into this world. This is not at all what the people here asked for when they came into this world…So when I sound crazy, or if the Israeli military should break with their racist tendency not to injure white people, please pin the reason squarely on the fact that I am in the midst of a genocide which I am also indirectly supporting, and for which my government is largely responsible.” ––Rachel Corrie

Clinton accuses Iran of seeking to intimidate
BRUSSELS – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton swiped hard at Iran on Wednesday, accusing its hardline leaders of fomenting divisions in the Arab world, promoting terrorism, posing threats to Israel and Europe, and seeking to "intimidate as far as they think their voice can reach."
Her remarks, at the conclusion of two days of talks in Egypt, Israel and the West Bank, were notable for coming from an Obama administration that has raised the prospect of diplomatic engagement with Iran as part of a new direction in U.S. foreign policy.
In remarks to reporters aboard her plane en route from Ramallah to Brussels, Belgium, Clinton said that in her talks with Arab foreign ministers and other leaders she heard "over and over and over again" a deep-seated worry about threats posed by the Iranians.
"It is clear that Iran intends to interfere with the internal affairs of all of these people and try to continue their efforts to fund terrorism, whether it's Hezbollah or Hamas or other proxies," she said.

Is Pasta a Weapon? Ask the State Department for an Answer
Lately, the State Department has been…um…fumbling for the right words to describe Israel’s illegal blockade of the occupied Gaza Strip.
Just look at this ludicrous exchange (below) between a reporter and State Department spokesperson Robert Wood at a press briefing last week
Discussing whether pasta is a dual-use weapon might be funny were it not for the fact that Israel’s illegal blockade of the occupied Gaza Strip is barely keeping 1.5 million people at survival levels.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pledged $900 million in U.S. aid at the International Conference in Support of the Palestinian Economy for the Reconstruction of Gaza.
At first glance, this pledge seems fair given that U.S. military aid to Israel was responsible for the destruction of an estimated $2 billion in Palestinian civilian infrastructure.
But, look closer at the pledge, and you’ll find that not one dollar is devoted to the reconstruction of the occupied Gaza Strip. Instead, the money, if approved by Congress, will go towards humanitarian aid ($300 million), budgetary support for the Palestinian Authority ($200 million), and economic and institutional reforms in the West Bank ($400 million).
Worse yet, in her speech to the donor’s conference, Clinton made no mention of ending Israel’s illegal military occupation of the Gaza Strip or lifting Israel’s illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip.
QUESTION: But can you imagine any circumstance under which pasta could be considered a dual-use item? Or is there some — you know, is rigatoni somehow going to be used as a weapon? (Laughter.)
MR. WOOD: I’m not involved in those discussions, so I –
QUESTION: Well, I mean — I mean, it just seems to be absurd on the face of it, if that’s what happening.
MR. WOOD: Well, there are people on the ground who are dealing with these issues. And I think we should leave it –
QUESTION: Dealing with the pasta dual-use issue?
QUESTION: Yeah, can you take a question on the pasta, please?
MR. WOOD: I’m not going to take the question on the pasta –
QUESTION: Why?
MR. WOOD: — because it’s –
QUESTION: Well, the United States is obviously pushing it, so obviously it’s something –
MR. WOOD: We’re trying to get humanitarian supplies in – on the ground to the people in Gaza.
QUESTION: Do you think food is a humanitarian supply?
MR. WOOD: Food certainly is.
QUESTION: All kinds of food?
MR. WOOD: I – I’m not able to tell you from here whether it –
QUESTION: Can you get a – can you take the question of what kind of food that the U.S. thinks is a humanitarian supply?
MR. WOOD: I’m not going to take that question, because I don’t think it’s a legitimate question.
QUESTION: You don’t think it’s legitimate that the Palestinians need certain foods and is – should Israel decide what food the Palestinians need?
MR. WOOD: I’m sorry, Elise, I’m not going to – I’ve spoken on it.
End the Occupation

Students protest cartoon of Rachel Corrie
Newspaper's editors refuse to apologize for running it
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS – Friday, March 21, 2003
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A sit-in continued for a second day yesterday over a college newspaper cartoon describing the actions of the Olympia peace activist killed by an Israeli bulldozer as the definition of stupidity.
The cartoon depicts a woman sitting in front of a bulldozer with the dictionary definition of the word "stupidity" listed below, along with an additional definition: "3. Sitting in front of a bulldozer to protect a gang of terrorists."
Rachel Corrie, 23, a student at The Evergreen State College, was killed Sunday as she tried to stop an Israeli bulldozer from destroying the home of a Palestinian physician. Witnesses said Corrie knelt in front of the machine, which kept coming and crushed her. The Israeli military said the driver didn't see her in time….

Hey Dicky, she was only a semi-finalist for a darwin award.
I wonder if the definition of stupidity is murdering someone, pretending to investigate and then sending out the trolls to yell,"Who's that stomping on my bridge" or in Rachel's case, rolling over our pancake? At some point all the billy goats who are just looking to get to the pasture on the other side of the bridge come to realize that there is one entity stopping that peaceful walk.
I remember hearing Medea Benjamin debate the king of the trolls. Dick Perle, aka Richard, on the subject of the Iraq war. Dicky sounded smooth and knowledgeable to Medea's voice.
Medea travels to Gaza this week.(www.rachelcorriefoundation.org)
As Tom Ricks has so aptly stated and what most of us billy goats now know, Iraq was a huge mistake. Medea knew what she was talking about…Iraq huge mistake.
Rachel knew what she was talking about…America turning its eyes away from Palestine….huge mistake.
Again, I wonder if the definition of stupidity is failing to investigate the murder of an American citizen after you used American equipment to perpetrate the act. Joined at the hip so unable to point fingers, or so it would seem, two countries making huge mistakes.
Five minutes before her death there was a change in orders.
Medea Benjamin, Craig and Cindy Corrie, Alice Walker, Brian Baird, Phil Weiss, Steven Walt, Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter, Joe Carr, Saed Abu Hijleh and on and on and on.
Dear Chris, this is the gene pool that Rachel swirls in.
Allowing Israel to survive in any form is "not helpful."
Rachel lived as an American. Chris Berel is an Israel Firster, the gassy professor of Chris's Stools.
Israel deprived the US and the world of one of its more aware and compassionate citizens when they murdered Rachel Corrie. I miss her and grieve over the loss to us all.
