Regardless of Freeman, the realists aren’t resting…

Obama, talk to Hamas, says this group of 10 muckety-mucks including Brent Scowcroft, Zbig Brzezinski, Paul A. Volcker, Ted Sorensen, and the great Henry Siegman. Two former senators, both Republicans: Chuck Hagel, Nancy Kassebaum Baker. Nebraska and Kansas--so much for the Christian Zionists. Where are the Dems? Siegman says that they have been granted an audience with Obama. Note Siegman's role: he is the Jewish mensch and moral leader, who has already met with Hamas, teaming up with realists. Powerful combination.

I'm worried. Most of the names on that letter aren't even Jewish. This is a dangerous precedent. What if Americans start putting their own interests ahead of Israel's?

  2. Steve R says:

I think everyone on that list is AARP eligible. What happened to this as a youth movement?

  3. Richard Witty says:

Talk to Hamas already. Test their word.

  4. Julian says:

"Talk to Hamas already. Test their word."

    Their word:
"There is no solution to the Palestinian problem except by jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are a waste of time and a farce. The Palestinian people is far too eminent to have its future, its rights and its destiny toyed with. As stated in the Hadith: "The people of Al-Sha'm are [Allah's] rod in His land. Through them, He wreaks vengeance on whomever He wishes among His servants. The hypocrites among them are not allowed to be superior to the believers among them, and they shall die in grief and distress."

  5. Citizen says:

Israel's word, especially considering Likud power now in place, is summed up by the Likud charter, which
states clearly that the Palestinian land is given to the Jews by God, that Jews have therefore a natural right to settle there, and that the natives cannot have a fully sovereign state of their own.

  6. Richard Witty says:

"Their word" would be "we commit to long-term co-existence with Israel on friendly basis and renounce violence as a means to reconcile differences."

  7. Richard Witty says:

If they don't get there, then even a mid-range co-existence with the entire absence of shelling of civilians would be a good outcome.

  8. Citizen says:

Seems you mean, Witty, the Palestinians should just agree with the Likud charter. I fail to see how
anyone standing in the shoes of any Palestinian could possibly agree to live peacefully with the goals
of the Likud charter. Please clarify. Thanks.

I wonder if I/P is part of the reason Volcker has been sidetracked by this administration.

  10. watching says:

    No doubt about it.

  11. Mooser says:

So Julian, if what you sayh is true, what kind of state allows unarmed civilians to settle in the occupied areas, subject to attacks? Israel wouldn't be using their religious fanatacism to make shlimazels out of them, would they? Why that would be very, very wrong, almost like one Jew cheating or taking advantage of another.
They are too chicken to just take the areas militarily and expel the Palestinians, so they let settler violence do it for them? Wow, what a great place! Remind me to give Israel all my support. Putting un-armed religious civilians in the way of jihad. Now that some moral shit, there.
