What if Jane Harman was named Chang Ha Lee?

A friend offered this bagatelle:

Thought experiment on Jane Harman: if her name were Chang Ha Lee, and the
country for which she allegedly ran interference as a de facto agent were China, would
the reaction be: (a) harsher, (b) friendlier, (c) the same.

I think the answer's obvious

    Witty type accounting.

That's nothing. What if she had an Iranian sounding name and it was a "suspected Iranian agent" who she was plotting with?

I do believe we'd see whole heads exploding on both sides of the political aisle. (Not, as Jerry Seinfeld might say, that there's anything *wrong* with that.)

  4. Gert says:

    She'd be frying, wouldn't she?

  5. lurker says:

We need Witty and Berel's input on your Question, Phil. I bet they don't reply.

  6. delurker says:

Witty and Berel will show up eventually to tell us that Israel and the U.S. enjoy a special relationship and that their interests are the same, so even if the agent is foreign, he's on the same side against all those evil a-rabs and mooslims, so he's really not foreign at all.

  7. PHILIP: If you really want to be a good assimilationist, you need to add a second 'L' to your name. Sorry, but that's the way things work!

  8. Eva Smagacz says:

What if she contributed to Palestinian rather than Jewish charities, and the contributions "supported" Hamas sympathisers rather than Likud supporters?

  9. I think the answer's obvious

Yes. People would be screaming about anti-asianism!

  10. Citizen says:

Then she'd be on Uncle Samy's Homeland Security's S..list, rather than it's 1st-in-line for free money list.

  11. MRW. says:

Not according to my Uncle Philip who gave a lecture in Latin about it.

  12. MRW. says:

    Brilliant observation by your friend.

  13. Anonymous says:

Chang Ha Lee? Almost a master stroke: Chang Ha Lee Fa (常哈里发) means Chang Caliph.

  14. hasbarablaster says:

    She'd probably be under arrest.

  15. TimothyL says:

The bottom line to the Jane Harman affair is that Americans who believe that justice (here, for example, by Ethics Committee hearings at a minimum)are just sick and tired of selective privilege and exemption by government and media from ordinary accountability processes for culprits for whom the only apparent rationale is that they are Jewish. Begin with the sinking of the Liberty, and on you go. Just sick and tired – period.
There should be full hearings into the Haran affair.

the media is the benedict arnold of the american experiment with republican democracy.

bought and paid for and subservient to the corpotocracy.
not interested in serving truth to the populace.

    thats americas pravda.

  17. Todd says:

I can't see where the elites protect the interests of the average American citizen at all. It's pretty obvious that our rulers mostly despise the majority and favor the interests of Israelis, Mexicans, Chinese, and just about any other group over the interests of the vast majority of Americans. The current generation of elites is a mixture of anti-American extremists and thieves who view the nation as something to tear apart of rob, and who seem to feel some sort of righteous duty to punish, change and control the population.

But Eva is right that Muslim or Palestinian groups are treated differently than Jewish and Israeli groups in the United States. The difference between the softness displayed towards Jewish and Israeli interests and the pass that other groups get is that the media and other elite groups is not filled with Chinese, Mexicans or others deemed worthy of a pass.

  18. Chris Berel says:

You can't see because you are blinded by your bigotry.

The Palestinian groups get no softness because their favorite method of protest is to deliberately murder women and children. Americans have a soft spot for innocent women and children.

When the Jews accidentally kill innocent women and children, the American people know that palestinian terrorists use them s human shields.

  19. Todd says:

Bigotry instaed of anti-Semitism! Are you changing your tune, Chris?

  20. duh says:

pretty hard not to be a human shield when you are 1.5 million people herded onto a few square miles of land.

  21. Babs says:

Jane Harmon could look in the mirror to find one of those causes of radicalization that she wants to snort out.
