Derry in Northern Ireland was ground zero for the Irish nationalist movement. Part of the city renamed itself Free Derry in the late 60s. Lately it has become a center for pro-Palestinian feeling. Here are two recent photos from the city, sent along by a friend, demonstrating the sentiment.

It's the converse of the tendency among n. Ireland protestant loyalists to support British imperial ventures hither & yon, and in this respect there is a time-warp; n. Ireland protestant organisations will go on regarding all sorts of erstwhile British colonial causes that Britain itself has abandoned, such as s. Africa & 'Rhodesia,' as being allied to theirs. This leads to a right-wing hold-out mentality which is further to the right than the home administration. Ian Lustick's book "Unsettled States, Disputed Lands" gives a very sensitive and detailed account, from a Gramscian point of view, of how this has happened in previous colonial disputes.

This actually isn't a new thing. My uncle's a big Irish Republican supporter, and he told me about the Palestinian flags in Nationalist/Republican neighborhoods at least 5 years ago.
