Israel threatened to turn West Bank into ’2nd Gaza’ if P.A. didn’t sell out on Goldstone

What is there to say about this, beyond shouting? You’ll recall that the Palestinian Authority at first came out against the Goldstone report until there was an uproar in Palestinian society. Now Haaretz has reported on the causes for this Palestinian betrayal. The great Akiva Eldar

The request by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the United Nations Human Rights Council last year to postpone the vote on the Goldstone report followed a particularly tense meeting with the head of the Shin Bet security service, Haaretz has learned. At the October meeting in Ramallah, Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin told Abbas that if he did not ask for a deferral of the vote on the critical report on last year’s military operation, Israel would turn the West Bank into a "second Gaza."

Diskin, who reports directly to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, threatened to revoke the easing of restrictions on movement within the West Bank that had been implemented earlier last year. He also said Israel would withdraw permission for mobile phone company Wataniya to operate in the Palestinian Authority.

MY COMMENT: According to HBO’s The Sopranos, thugs like Diskin are called “goombahs” (at least in ‘Jersey’).

    Definition of goombah
    noun
A hired thug. Usually a large man, payed to be the bodyguard and or mercenary of the person paying him.
“I’ll send Ryan, my goombah, to shake down that punk, who was bustin’ our balls, the other day.”

This is the way Israel tries to prove its “legitimacy.”

Diskin is crying “wolf” to show Israeli muscles to Fatah, whose leadership is as much corrupt and coward as Israeli. He knows that the West Bank is much softer target than Gaza plus Mahmoud Abbas is no Meshaal or Nasrallah. Furthermore, Bibi is trying to tell the pro-resistance countries that with Obama under his control – he is free to carry-out another genocide of Palestinian or Lebanese for that matter.

More than 100 Israeli security officers raided the West Bank settlement of Yitzhar before dawn on Sunday. Officers arrested 10 settlers in the crackdown, include five allegedly involved in burning down a nearby Palestinian mosque last month.

Two of the five suspects arrested in connection with the arson were minors, eyewitnesses said. It was not immediately clear what led police to arrest the other five settkers.

Palestinian activists urge Hamas to probe own Gaza war crimes

By Amira Hass and Tomer Zarchin, Haaretz Correspondents

Eleven Palestinian human rights organizations have called on the Palestinian Authority and the Hamas government in Gaza to endorse the Goldstone report by investigating Palestinian violations of international law allegedly committed during operation Cast Lead.

Acts listed by the report include Palestinian attacks on civilians in Israel and instances of internal repression, such as summary executions in the Gaza Strip and arrests and torture in the West Bank.

The calls were made in identical letters sent to Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh. The organizations asked the two leaders to launch investigations before the February 5 deadline by which the UN Secretary-General is to report to the General Assembly on compliance by Israel and the Palestinians with the assembly’s earlier resolution.

The UN needs to build a wall around the 1947 UN Mandated Israeli borders and prevent Israelis from breaching it with military force.

  7. Baruch Rosen says:

Tommy, thats pretty funny considering it was Israel who accepted the partion and the Arabs who attacked them in 48.
Maybe the world needs to build a wall around your stupidity.

    • SimoHurtta says:

Well Baruch if UN would make a hypothetical partition plan where 50 percent of your land and properties would be taken in return for nothing you would surely resist. Of course those who get are “happy” and those who have by force to give are not “happy”.

If UN would now make a new partition plan for all Israel / Palestine and give 50 percent of the lands to both Jews and Palestinians. Who would Baruch be now stupid and resist the division plan? Hardly the Palestinians and Arabs in general. Not even the generous division plan with 67 borders is enough for Israeli Jews. Stupid isn’t it?

Simha Flapan , The Birth of Israel: Myths and Realities , pg. 81-118. An excerpt (pg. 42, 83-84, 132):

In April 1948, forces of the Irgun penetrated deep into Jaffa, which was outside the borders of the proposed Jewish state. [...]Ben-Gurion, despite harsh pronouncements against the dissidents [i.e. the Irgun and other terrorist squads], waited until after the establishment of the state to force them to disband. He could have done this earlier had it suited his purposes, but clearly it did not. The terrorists were very successful in extending the war into areas not officially allocated to the Jews.

Between 600,000 and 700,000 Palestinian Arabs were evicted or fled from areas that were allocated to the Jewish state or occupied by Jewish forces during the fighting and later integrated de facto into Israel. During and after the exodus, every effort was made — from the razing of villages to the promulgation of laws — to prevent their return.

According to the partition plan, the Jewish state would have had well over 300,000 Arabs, including 90,000 Bedouin. With the Jewish conquest of areas designated for the Arab state (western Galilee, Nazareth, Jaffa, Lydda, Ramleh, villages south of Jerusalem, and villages in the Arab Triangle of central Palestine), the Arab population would have risen by another 300,000 or more. Zionist leaders feared such numbers of non-Jews would threaten the stability of the new state both militarily – should they become a fifth column for Arab armies, and socially, insofar as a substantial Muslim and Christian minority would challenge the new state’s Jewish character. Thus the flight of up to 700,000 Arabs from Palestinian villages and towns during 1948 came to many as a relief.

It wasn’t until April 30, 1948, two weeks before the end of the [British] Mandate, that Arab chiefs of staff met for the first time to work out a plan for military intervention. Under the pressure of mounting public criticism, fueled by the increasingly desperate situation in Palestine – the massacre of Deir Yassin, the fall of Tiberias, the evacuation of Haifa, the collapse of the Palestinian forces, the failure of the A.L.A. [Arab Liberation Army], and the mass flight of refugees – the army chiefs of the Arab states were finally compelled to discuss the deployment of their regular armies.

Ilan Pappe, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine , an excerpt (pg. 84-85):

Official Israeli historiography describes the next month, April 1948, as a turning point. According to this version, an isolated and threatened Jewish community in Palestine was moving from defense to offense, after its near defeat. The reality of the situation could not have been more different: the overall military, political and economic balance between the two communities was such that not only were the majority of Jews in no danger at all, but in addition, between the beginning of December 1947 and the end of March 1948, their army had been able to complete the first stage of the cleansing of Palestine, even before the master plan had been put into effect.

If there were a turning point in April, it was the shift from sporadic attacks and counter-attacks on the Palestinian civilian population towards the systematic mega-operation of ethnic cleansing that now followed.

Between 30 March and 15 May 1948, i.e. before any Arab government intervened, Israeli forces seized 200 villages and expelled 250,000 Palestinians. The Israeli leadership stated, “The principal objective of the operation is the destruction of Arab villages … the eviction of the villagers.” On 9 April, Israeli forces massacred 93 people, including 30 babies, at Deir Yassin. In Haifa, the Israeli commander ordered, “Kill any Arab you encounter.”

Another Israeli journalist at a different newspaper, Nahum Barnea of
Yediot Aharonot, wrote in November of 2000 that there are Israeli
reporters who do not pass the “lynching test.” These are journalists who
could not bring themselves to criticize the Palestinians even when two
Israelis were savagely murdered by a Palestinian mob in Ramallah. Which
journalists? Gideon Levy, Amira Hass, and Akiva Eldar of Ha’aretz
