Today in Haaretz: "[Elie] Wiesel blasted Judge Richard Goldstone, saying his report on the Israeli offensive in Gaza was ‘a crime against the Jewish people.’"
A few days ago in Haaretz: "Professor Alan Dershowitz slammed jurist Richard Goldstone, the architect of a UN report which accuses Israel of Gaza war crimes, saying he is a traitor to the Jewish people, Army Radio reported Sunday."
Here is where we stand today:
Im Tirtzu, a right-wing on-campus Zionist advocacy group, supported among others by the Reverend John Hagee, claimed in Maariv last week that "92 percent of [the] negative references to the IDF in the Goldstone report originating with Israeli sources came from organizations sponsored by NIF [New Israeli Fund]. The fund’s grantees include Adalah, Breaking the Silence, B’Tselem, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, Public Committee Against Torture in Israel, Yesh Din and the Israeli branch of Physicians for Human Rights."
Hence, according to Weisel, who the Norwegian Nobel Committee called a "messenger to mankind" when awarding him the Peace Prize in 1986 for his Holocaust writings,and Im Tirtzu, a panoply of Israeli human rights organizations have been the source for "a crime against the Jewish people." Are we to conclude that all of the above mentioned Israeli human rights organizations are anti-Semitic? Human Rights organizations, including Israeli ones, are now the criminals, whereas the IDF and the Jewish people are the victims. So speaketh Elie Wiesel, with more to follow surely.

Yeah, it is. Goldstone was kool–until he took on the I-P situation. I don’t know how it is over there in Italy by you, Shmuel, but in the USA, everybody I know who actually follows US foreign policy, especially in the Middle East, dare not speak out against Israeli policies. Hagee’s financial backing for the Israeli right wing is not trivial and needs to be mentioned.
I agree that Hagee is important; Max Blumenthal did a video that exposed how he funded much of the settlement of Ariel with millions of dollars to make state of the art buildings. And he does influence millions of American Christians; John McCain wouldnt’ve hobnobbed with him otherwise.
I read Elie Wiesel’s books growing up; they are part of a sacred canon of Jewish literature and identity. He defines the Holocaust for many of us. This guy has made a living talking about his experiences, writing about them and promoting himself as a general moral authority. Yet here he sounds like any hysterical Hasbara-fount.
It seems the last Holocaust survivor with any moral authority left is Hedy Epstein. Hopefully someone will correct me on that.

Hedy Epstein spent the Holocaust safe and cozy in England. Wiesel spent the Holocaust, beaten, starved and abused in a concentration camp. Wiesel is a hero. A Nobel Prize winning author. Epstein is a self promoter who has accomplished nothing except complicity in the murder of an Egyptian Policeman and a very short lived hunger strike. Though by the looks of her it doesn’t appear she missed many meals.

No, he isn’t. I’m not going to join you in a mud-slinging contest about Wiesel and Epstein, though. I am just going to make a few important points:
1.) Surviving the Holocaust is not an accomplishment. Call it luck, fate or whatever spiritual explanation you like to come up with: The vast majority of Holocaust survivors did not survive because of daring actions which might classify them as heroes (some did, like those who staged the uprising at Sobibor), but because of circumstances entirely beyond their control.
2.) Surviving the Holocaust does not make you a better person. The concept that Holocaust survivors are morally superior is not logical and furthermore is, quite obviously, a horrible idea as it would imply that being subjected to incredible suffering will “school” a human to be a better person.
3.) Surviving the Holocaust does not enable somebody to say more meaningful things about the Holocaust than anybody else. Their perspective is, harsh as that sounds, inevitably limited and distorted. The late Raul Hilberg went so far as to say: “Only when the last survivors will have died, we [historians] will be freed of them.”

I’m impressed with Koshiro’s moral argument but I suppose one of the deepest human ideas is that we can bring good out of evil.
Wiesel ‘excommunicates’ because he is really a theologian (he might agree with that) and he has stood for the dark morality/theology whereby suffering leads to a purer world, the sign of purity being Israel’s existence. Any negative comment on Israel is blasphemy and apostasy – ‘perfidus ille Deo!’ All unconditional support for Israel by non-Jews entails Wiesel’s (enlightened humanity’s) fullest benediction and blotting out of sin, very much welcomed and desired by many Christians. They do not see that it is an unaccpetably, even monstrously, politicised version of moral law, moral purity and forgiveness.
I wonder what effect all this is having on Goldstone himself. Is he still the Zionist he was?
