    MY COMMENT: Swinton is one of my favorite actors/actresses. Here Swinton is certainly looking more like a young David Bowie (or John Hurt) than an aged Madonna. Vive la différence!

    p.s. I know Tilda is a good friend of David Bowie’s and David Bowie is extremely well-read on mideastern history and politics – though his public image is a-political. For all we know, he may very well have mondowiess bookmarked on his spacey Major Tom laptop :-)

      I can’t get enough of it either, Taxi. I think the reason that it is so powerful is the determined look on Tilda’s face. She almost looks as if she is daring someone to call her anti-Semitic or to question her political beliefs. I’m not sure why, but somehow I don’t think this will harm her career in the least. In fact, maybe I am naive, but I have this feeling that this photo will give other people the courage to do the same.

    Tilda first caught my admiring eye when, playing Queen Isabelle, she bit out the jugular of one of King Edward’s young lovers in Derek Jarman’s amazing EDWARD II. I began loving her when she played Hope Kurtz in STRANGE CULTURE, the film about the federal persecution of my University at Buffalo colleague, Professor Steve Kurtz, who was absurdly accused of “bioterrorism” in the midst of the crazy days of the early oughts, which are still with us, of course.

    Make no mistake: by doing this, she loses jobs and loses real money. She won’t starve, of course, but it’s a genuine, principled stand. Any bets on who will follow? I’m giving odds on Viggo Mortensen.

    It’s not as daring as supporting Palestine but I remember very vividly Johnny Depp criticizing Bush before the Iraq war and pitifully retracting what he had said 6 hours later. A call from Ari Gold to straighten him out? (for those who don’t know “Entourage”, Ari Gold is the fictional hyperactive Jewish agent based on Rahm Emanuel’s brother, advertised in the series as “the most powerful agent in Hollywood”)

    One of these times when the big screen hero seems somewhat less of a hero in real life.

    I know this is off-topic but when is Mondoweiss going to address the huge scandal that the recently deposed Liam Fox’s blackmailable obsession was largely being bankrolled by the Israel Lobby in Britain? Hedge-funders, private equity guys and weapons dealers and most of them connected to BICOM, the British AIPAC?

      Hear, hear. The BBC did mention yesterday that the grim assembly with which Fox had become involved had been encouraging him in his ‘pro-American, pro-Israel’ commitments. (There are assumptions about America and more distantly about Jewish people in that phrase that might be questioned.) A letter in today’s Independent by a Labour Member of Parliament rather cryptically accuses Fox of running an independent foreign policy.

          and oddly enough, it appears at the inquiry Every Labour MP called by the Speaker – and by my count there were 18 of them – failed to land a glove on the Defence Secretary. Their questions were either over-elaborate or designed to show how smart the questioner was, or a combination of both. The question that was screaming out to be asked was: “What was Mr Werritty doing at those meetings?” That, surely, is what we all want to know. Why didn’t anyone ask? It’s not the first time that MPs have missed the obvious and it won’t be the last. The short, sharp and pithy question is a valuable weapon in the Chamber yet is seldom used.

        Surprisingly, the right wing Daily Mail is running some very incendiary articles about the Israel connection right now.

        They have one article saying that the real fear was that Werritty was being run, wittingly or not, by Mossad and that Liam Fox may have therefore been a useful idiot for Mossad.

        They have another quoting a pissed off venture capitalist donor to the slush fund, who says he’s afraid the classified specs for a highly propietary defense application that he showed to Fox and Werrity might have ended up being “pirated” by the Israelis, because that’s what the Israelis do.

        Also, Werrity apparently spoke a little Farsi and was going into Iran and running meetings with opposition leaders like a spy, but not at the direction of the British government.

          The Independent on Sunday has a main headline: ‘Werrity “plotted with Mossad to target Iran”‘ – lots of scare quotes.
          The main editorial congratulates the press on forcing Fox’s resignation. It seems to be agreed that (as annie mentions) the parliamentary debate was weak. This may be explained partly by the style of the main Opposition defence spokesman, Jim Murphy, who is rather too soft-spoken for these occasions – but I would share the suspicion that the Oppos have their own links with Israel, even with Mossad, that might not look too different from those in which Dr. Fox is entangled.
          The same edition of the IoS has a report on the famous Iranian plot against the Saudi Ambassador, ‘taken very seriously in the White House’. I can’t quite tell whether the reporter, Patrick Cockburn, is using these words with a straight face or a mocking one.

    What is equally if not more extraordinary is that Conde Nast, publisher of Vogue, New Yorker, Glamour, Wired, and the add rich Vanity Fair chose to publish this photo in the first place. While there is no doubt its doing so will cause Dershowitz, Foxman, the ZOA’s Morton Klein and David Horowitz and their ilk to froth at the mouth, I suspect that they will not dare to launch a campaign targeting the magazine’s advertisers because they know it would be doomed to fail.

        Interesting. In the above documentary, I did not detect that sort of racism. Perhaps he has learned to disguise it. That might explain why he proposes the particular solution he does, and why I have problems with it.
        In a nutshell he proposes establishing what is essentially every neocon’s favorite ‘wet dream’ of a League of Democracies to preemptively intervene all around the world to prevent genocide/eliminationism.
        This is a very dangerous notion, because I have little doubt that this would ultimately be misused, abused and perverted (like the IMF, World Bank, etc.) so as to facilitate “Western” hegemony (economic and otherwise). Also, I doubt that it would act to prevent Israel and “The West” from carrying out genocide against the Palestinians and/or other groups not favored by “The West”.

          There is a long and sordid history of what has befallen public figures, large and small, who have publicly dared to challenge what that French official once, in a moment of absolute candor, properly categorized as “that shitty little state.”

          One of the first, but far from the last, was Sen JW Fulbright, who in 1963 held Senate hearings that revealed that tax-exempt donations to Israel by American Jews and others were being funneled back to the American Zionist Council (before it changed its name and camouflaged itself as AIPAC) to pay for propaganda designed to win over Americans in support of Israel’s ethnic cleansing policies.

          The next time that Fulbright came up for re-election, this courageous opponent of the Vietnam War was targeted by the Zionists whose only concern was Israel and they put up and funded Dale Bumpers to run against him and defeat him. Other congressional victims along the way afterward who honestly addressed the Palestinian cause included Charles Percy, Paul Findley, Adlai Stevenson III, Pete McCloskey and every member of the Congressional Black Caucus who had criticized Israel with the exception of John Conyers who they successfully managed to neuter. The CBC’s most recent victims, of course, were Cynthia McKinney and Earl Hilliard

          The movie industry is no less under the thumb of the Zionists than is Congress as Vanessa Redgrave, one of the leading actresses of her time, discovered when she openly espoused the Palestinian cause.

          conyers has taken a lot of risks and bold actions in his career but not wrt israel. he almost single handily (amongst congress members) challenged the stolen ohio election that secured bush’s second term in office.

          The only thing that takes courage in Congress is challenging Israel and speaking up for Palestine. When Ray McGovern testified at Conyers’s hearing on the origin of the Iraq war and McGovern said it could be traced to O-I-L, oil, Israel, and location of US military bases, Conyers let him know that he thought that comment was “anti-Semitic.”

          Conyers also was in a position as the head of the House Justice Committee to being a charge of impeachment against GW Bush and he, like Pelosi, pulled it off the table. I have lost all respect for the man.

    Can’t speak for the others, but the main reason Findley lost was because he defended Reaganomics in the depth of the ’82 recession in a strong union district. Findley’s challenger, Dick Durbin, raised a lot of money from pro-Israel groups, that is true. However, Findley countered by raising a lot of money from pro-Arab groups. The two candidates were about equally matched in funding, as I recall. Findley would have won had he dared to speak out against Reaganomics.

      Dick Durbin, by his own admission, was solicited by AIPAC to run against Findley, as was Paul Simon against Charles Percy, as have been others along the way including, it appears, Sen. Dan Inyoui, Hawaii’s one-armed bandit who went into politics after a stint as an Israel Bond salesmen.

      In Findley’s case, while the funding was approximately the same, almost all of Durbin’s came from Jews outside of his district. In addition, AIPAC director Tom Dine recruited young Israel Firsters to “pound the pavements” on Durbin’s behalf and what was decisive, the borders of Findley’s district had been changed, eliminating his home area where we was extremely popular and bringing in a working class area that had been hit hard by Reagan’s economic policies.

      Redrawing the lines of political districts has long been another way to unseat a targeted politician and Illinois was no stranger to it. A decade later, the strongest critic of Israel in Congress, Chicago’s Gus Savage was defeated the same way: Redrawing district lines+outside Jewish money. Savage enraged the Jewish community by publicly reading a list of Jewish donors, all of them from out of state, who had contributed to his opponent, a bootlicking Uncle Tom named Mel Reynolds who was soon forced to resign after playing a around with a teenage volunteer. Reynolds had earned his Israeli stripes by volunteering on a kibbutz.

      Until this year when a vote by Californians changed the system, all of California’s congressional districts had been left to Michael Berman, brother of Uber Israel Firster Howard Berman who was also on Howie’s payroll.

      Thanks to the new system which established an “independent” state commission, which thus far seems immune from Zionist tampering, the new district boundaries that were redrawn after the 2000 census, have pit Berman against another Uber Israel Firster Brad Sherman for the same seat in 2012 and that fight over who is better for Israel has become increasingly nasty.

        I remember Gus Savage. No doubt he was hurt politically by campaign contributions to his primary opponent in 1992 by pro-Israel groups. He was also hurt by his own antics, which included trying to rape a Peace Corps volunteer in Zaire, and referring to the reporters covering him as “racists,” “race-traitors,” and “faggots.”

        I can’t speak to California politics, but in Illinois the decisive factor in Findley’s defeat was his support for Reaganomics during the brutal recession of ‘82. The decisive factor in Savage’s defeat, ten years later, was his own antics.

        Maybe I am naive, but I do not see the hidden hand of Jewry behind every electoral defeat, just as I do not see the hidden hand of Jewry in the Great Recession, 911, or the Kennedy assassinations.

          You have raised other issues, extraneous to this post, but the point of a hidden hand is that you don’t see it. You, it seems, are not looking very hard.

          Findley and Savage were both hurt by redrawing district boundaries and these have often been done with the purpose of defeating a politician who otherwise could not be beaten at the ballot box.

          In Findley’s case, they added a large Democratic working class section to his district while eliminating his home area which was predominantly Republican. In Savage’s case, they added a white voting bloc while subtracting an equal number of black voters. That made the difference.

          While it’s true that Savage did not spare words when criticizing his critics, he was not the first member of Congress to do so and remain in office. Nor have reports of sexual escapades necessarily led to defeat, even with members of the same sex as we saw with Barney Frank.

          In Savage’s case, his other enemies, both Democrats and Republicans, were only too eager to rob him of a key voting bloc. That’s the hidden hand that the public doesn’t see.

          I’ll leave 9/11, JFK and the Great Recession for another thread.
