Netanyahu’s party platform ‘flatly rejects’ establishment of Palestinian state

The recent Palestinian UN bid and this weeks Palestinian acceptance to UNESCO has once again put the “Peace Process” front and center. Listening to Netanyahu and the U.S. Administration, getting the Israelis and Palestinians “back to the negotiating table” is the utmost priority for a lasting peace deal. (Adam Horowitz mocked the Netanyahu policy in this post yesterday: “The Netanyahu Guide to Middle East Peace.“)

Although Netanyahu plays the part, the details of his party platform need to be taken into account as a “peace partner” to show the reality behind the circus. Likud Party Charter states:

a. “The Jordan river will be the permanent eastern border of the State of Israel.”

b. “Jerusalem is the eternal, united capital of the State of Israel and only of Israel. The government will flatly reject Palestinian proposals to divide Jerusalem”

c. “The Government of Israel flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian Arab state west of the Jordan river.”

d. “The Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza are the realization of Zionist values. Settlement of the land is a clear expression of the unassailable right of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel and constitutes an important asset in the defense of the vital interests of the State of Israel. The Likud will continue to strengthen and develop these communities and will prevent their uprooting.”

So while Netanyahu wants no pre-conditions from the Palestinians going into “negotiations” his party charter and ideology says otherwise.

Ah yes, the “preconditions” that aren’t really “preconditions” because they are Israeli “preconditions”.

Likud policy is very clear. There is no such thing as Palestine

Netanyahu gets chastised by Likud and other revisionist Zionists platforms at the mere nothing of anything which could lead to any sort of Palestinian state (including non-viable, non-contiguous, Bantustan-style mini-states).

Ariel Sharon had to start a new party in order to dismantle a few settlements. The settlement project and no Palestinian state West of the Jordan are Likud policy. It is an insult to even ask Abbas to negotiate with these guys. Abbas knows this. Bibi only pretends to give up pre-conditions to negotiating to fool the public into believing he is willing to. In the unlikely event of a negotiation, they would simply be conditions again.

Abbas should really just play the same game. Given in to appease the Quartet and the US and allow Bibi to play his cards stating the exact same nonsense yet again. When “The Jewish State” comes up, save it for ‘consideration’ once there is a viable “Palestinian State” to negotiate over. Bibi would be revealing it to be a pre-condition, be a liar, and would walk.

I appreciate the Likud’s honesty. It’s far more respectable than Labor’s and Kadima’s hypocrisy.

Remember Tzipi Livni’s rejection of Palestinian concessions in the Palestine Papers.

I’m no fan of Likud, but I feel the need to point out the inaccuracy of this post. This isn’t the Likud “Charter”, it is its party platform from the elections to the 15th Knesset in 1999, when Netanyahu lost his seat to Ehud Barak – that’s ages ago in Israeli politics. Platforms change significantly from election to election. The line about the “The Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza“, all in present tense, should be a clear sign that this is from long ago, before the disengagement plan.

The Likud hasn’t become a dovish party, but it has accepted the idea of a Palestinian state (though Netanyahu wouldn’t be heartbroken if it never came to be).
