Bernstein Book Underlines Foster’s Link to Clinton Sex Scandals

The Carl Bernstein book on Hillary gives weight to my favorite theory about the Clinton scandals: that Vincent Foster’s death in July 1993 was linked to Clinton’s zipper problem  According to the W.Post:

In Bernstein’s account, both Clintons went to great lengths to keep the
lid on his infidelities. At the behest of Wright and Hillary Clinton,
two partners with Hillary Clinton at the Rose Law Firm, Webster L.
Hubbell and Vincent W. Foster Jr., were hired to represent women named
in a lawsuit as having secret affairs with the governor. Hubbell and
Foster questioned the women, then obtained signed statements that they
never had sex with Bill Clinton. On one occasion, Bernstein reports,
Hillary Clinton was present for the questioning.

Bernstein thus provides evidence for a critical connection that I have made in the past (in this post): Foster was involved in covering up Bill Clinton’s sexual past.

What is the significance of this connection? Well, Foster’s death in 7/93, Month 6 of the Clinton White House, is always attributed to depression and his horror at the political ways of Washington, specifically the furore over Travelgate and Whitewater. I never bought it. Travelgate was scandalous, but small peanuts. Whitewater is something nobody can understand without a legal education and 10 years in Arkansas. Clinton’s zipper problem, however, was something that any boob could understand; and the Clinton machine lived in fear of that past coming out.

The zipper problem is what I believe made Vince Foster miserable in the spring and summer of 1993. The White House was aware that the Troopers were getting together to tell their story of being used as procurers in Arkansas. That was the big event behind closed doors. And as I reported in that earlier post, Clinton enemies in Arkansas said that Foster was trying that spring to suppress earlier investigations of Clinton’s sex life in which he had participated. Bernstein’s book now throws another log on the fire.

The key moment in all this is the interval right after Foster’s death when Hillary Clinton was on the phone all night with her aide Maggie Williams and counsel Bernie Nussbaum, phone calls later investigated by the Senate Whitewater committee. Maggie Williams then went into Foster’s office. Hillary wanted files that were in that office. Hmmm…

Myself, I never had any problem with Clinton’s promiscuity; truthfully, it made me more inclined to vote for him. It was the coverup that mattered. And happily, it looks like we’re going to learn more and more about that as the years go by…
