in this stirring endorsement of John McCain in today's Washington Post. Why do I think that Israel's protection is central, intellectually, to his crazed belief that "We [the U.S.] have a generations-long struggle with Islamic jihadism"? As Israel is central to the increasingly desperate efforts of the Republican Jewish Coalition to smear Obama and his surrogates, including Mel Levine. At least the RJC is halfway straightforward about this. Remember when Francis Fukuyama dared to wonder about the Israel-first motivation of the Iraq war nuts and Krauthammer accused him of Judeophobia? In the same racialist way that he says here that Jeremiah Wright's "race-baiting" is the true shadow side of Obama.
Can't we please move past this tribalist conversation? Yes we can: and Obama will do it for us, by marginalizing the neocons, and by triangulating me and Mel Levine.
(Though I must hand it to Krauthammer, he can write a killer column.)
