This issue isn’t going away (divestment initiatives in Vermont and Minnesota)

Both these stories are in the mainstream press. Here’s a divestment initiative at the University of Vermont:

“Israel is able to occupy and colonize Gaza and the West Bank because of corporations that construct the settlements, build walls and checkpoints, and supply the military hardware needed to control a civilian population,” Nolan Rampy, a graduate student who supports the latest divestment proposal, said in an e-mail. He added that “the divestment strategy addresses the only issue corporations are going to respond to: profits.”

And here’s a group pressing the Minnesota State Board of Investment to divest.

The group Minnesota Break the Bonds says Israeli bonds held by the state should be sold for moral and legal reasons, saying the “investment in Israel supports an apartheid system in both Israel and the Occupied Territories that causes thousands of civilian deaths, many of whom are children, and which involves the widespread abuse of human rights.”
