The viral skinnydipping scandal, and the real story

Israel/Palestine
on 32 Comments

I’ve been with the in-laws in the woods so have missed the most important story in American policy in the Middle East, skinnydipping in the Galilee, the fact that the FBI is interested in a congressional junket to Israel last year during which Kansas congressman Kevin Yoder jumped naked into the sea of Galilee. Yoder has duly apologized.

But Yousf Munayyer has the appropriate response at Politico:

It’s quite telling that the “news angle” here is about a congressman skinny dipping on a trip to Israel and not the bigger far more important and embarrassing problem of Congress’ regular prostitution to the pro-Israel lobby.

The first issue involves nudity and politicians, the second only involves major implications for American foreign policy in a region where we have countless interests, thousands of troops and a history of flawed foreign policy. But hey, sex and scandals drive traffic and ratings so who cares about all that other stuff.

We did a lot of reporting on the American Israel Education Foundation, a branch of AIPAC, last year– showing that good liberal Jewish philanthropists who endowed halls at Princeton and Harvard, and ballets and art museums, were also doing their utmost to corrupt American politicians on Israel policy. They’ve succeeded. The fact that the press can look on a midnight swim as more important than the obeisance of the Congress to the Israel lobby– a “private factfinding tour,” in the narcotized words of the Washington Post— shows the degree to which the entire American establishment has been converted to the Zionist cause. When is the press going to look into these Congressional “birthright” trips and blow the real story out of the water? When are they going to look into birthright, for that matter? Plenty of skinnydipping there.

In the original “get naked” Politico article they stated “privately paid for excursions” something like that. Jumped out at me. Have been politely hounding Huff Po (had the naked story up) and Chris Matthews to go deeper. “privately paid excursions” Chris Matthews did mention last night( Monday) that Aipac or some affiliate more than likely paid for the trips. How many of us thought this pay to play system was going to come to a halt after the Abramoff/ Ney scandal. But clearly not so when it comes to Israel (this was allegedly a fact finding mission). Looked up some of the rules that were passed after the Abramoff scandal ” Member and staff participation in officially connected travel that is in any way planned, organized, requested, or arranged by a lobbyist is prohibited” I believe some congress person was made to pay back a trip that was paid for by Taiwan for he and his wife. These congressional freshman and staff should pay back that money that they took from whomever paid for that trip to a foreign nation. That pay to play money. No need to wonder why only 9% to 12% (depending on which MSM outlet you listen to) of the American public have any faith in Dem or Republican Reps.

Glad you cut yourself off a bit in the woods with family. A good thing for mind and soul. You deserve time off

They officially get around the lobby sponsored rule by having one of AIPAC’s unofficially affiliated ‘Educational” Organizations sponsor the trips.
But it’s a sham and all the politicians know it, another exception for Israel.

Go read the Pro Publica story ” Lobbyist arranged N.Y. Congressman’s $20,ooo trip to Taiwan” unable to link

So if this Congressman had to pay back that 20,ooo to those who arranged that trip to Taiwan why not the same standard for pay to play trips to Israel?

The Freshman congress folks get naked in Israel story is off the front page of Huff Po now. Was front and center on Monday evening then went below the fold with the apology and the Akin “legitimate rape” story. Not one of the Huff po pieces brought up the pay to play issue or the F.B.I. interest.

When will anyone bring up that New York Congressman Bill Owen was required to pay back that Taiwanese pay to play trip. What applies to Bill Owen and that Taiwanese trip should apply to these freshman and their staff’s pay to play trips to Israel.

i read this story at politico, had the same reaction as Munayyer. politico’s article actually quoted someone as saying this late experience was a ‘rite of passage‘ for new congresspeople. i will try to find the quote. my jaw dropped open when i read that. why are our congress members having their ‘rite of passage’ in friggin israel?

It is a right of passage.
If you don’t mind your head exploding go find Hoyer’s speech to AIPAC, 2004 or 06 I think, (lost my link in the great crash)
He said it was IMPERATIVE that all freshmen US Senators and Congresspeople realize their DUTY TO ISRAEL and visiting Israel was a way to educate them.
No shit, he really said that.
I’d be so freaking happy if these traitors were ‘disappeared’ tomorrow I wouldn’t know what to do.

here’s the original politico story(includes video report), seems they were talking about the trips themselves and not the late night swims per se. still gross.

        http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/79865.html

The American Israel Educational Foundation, a group related to AIPAC, the prominent pro-Israel advocacy group, sponsored the trip, which ran from Aug. 13 to Aug. 21, 2011. The trip cost AIEF upwards of $10,000 per person, according to records filed with the House Ethics Committee. More than 60 people took part in this AIEF trip.

These trips to the Holy Land are a rite of passage for members of Congress, as they visit the most sacred sites in the Jewish and Christian faiths – while their Israeli government hosts drive home the huge importance of U.S. support of Israel. That’s partially why, when the trip devolved into drinking and merrymaking, Cantor was livid.

cantor was allegedly livid. that’s part of the whole framing of this article.

On the Israel trip that included the late night swim, the group of lawmakers on Aug. 18 departed the posh David Citadel Hotel in Jerusalem for Tiberias, a historic seaside town located on the banks of the Sea of Galilee. On the night in question, the GOP group checked into Scots Hotel, where rooms could run up to $1,000 each night. At 8:45 p.m., they headed to Decks, a popular restaurant located on the sea, according to an itinerary filed with the House Ethics Committee.

As dinner was winding down, Cantor and McCarthy left the restaurant, but the most of the other lawmakers and staff stayed behind, and the drinking continued, according to several sources who attended the dinner.

After what they describe as a “long, hot day,” more than 20 lawmakers and senior aides decided to jump into the sea, sources said. Some went in wearing all their clothes, although others partially undressed.

Yoder removed all his clothes, the only person to do so, according to multiple sources.

The target of the FBI investigation may be Rep Michael Grimm, who failed to file paperwork on a subsequent trip to Cyprus. Grimm is well-known to Mondoweiss readers.

I understand that the problem of Hon. Grimm may be deeper, namely that accepting the junket to Cyprus was illegal. It is prohibited for the congresscreature to accept a paid-expenses trip from an organization that has lobbyists on the payroll, unless a representative of that organization three times exclaims “educational!”, spits over his left shoulder and makes a full turn (it is called making 500-something corporation). This procedure is supposed to lift the ethical level of Congress members. Cypriot lobbyists, bumpkins that they are, forgot about the spitting (or exclaimed “educational!?” rather than “educational!”).

Congress-critters must register as foreign agents. Or agents-in-general, anything but representatives of their constituents. The system is broken, don’t blame only aipac but mainly the culprits taking the bribes.

Those that lobby for a foreign nation should absolutely have to register as foreign agents for another country. And Aipac should be required to register under the FARA

The standard is that those who take orders from a foreign country must register as agents. Because that is what being an agent means. Americans who just happen to think that the U.S. should be good friends with a foreign country aren’t agents of that country and so they don’t have to register as such.

“just happen to think” if they do not out they go.

Last effort to have Aipac’s mother organization to register under FARA
        http://www.irmep.org/FULE.htm

        http://www.fara.gov/

Fred thinks it is just friendship. Former CIA analyst including Ray McGovern, Kathleen and Bill Christison, former head of the CIA’s Bin Laden unit Micheal Scheuer, Prof Mearsheimer, Former President Jimmy Carter and many more think Israel owns U.S. foreign policy which undermines U.S. National Security

Who is just blaming Aipac? But amazing that the Aipac espionage trial was dismissed. Will blame them for that. And for accessing classified intelligence and passing information onto Israeli officials. Not ok. Aipac should be required to register under FARA

Chris Matthews did mention likely paid for by Aipac affiliate. But when you read the article that Pro Publica put out awhile back about Congressman Owen paying back the $20,ooo that lobbyist sprung for his trip to Taiwan. It also says that that trip had been given the ok by the ethics committee but that it was discovered that lobbyist had sponsored and planned the trip. Seems like this trip would fall under a similar category. They should be required to pay back that money spent intended for pay to play

I wonder if anyone knows what came of IRmep’s formal complaint

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — A complaint filed today with the IRS and Justice Department charges the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF) is a “sham” charitable organization of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The AIEF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation which reported $26.3 million in 2009 revenue, is housed in the same facilities as AIPAC. AIPAC was incorporated as a domestic lobby in 1963 by a former Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs employee, six weeks after the Justice Department ordered its parent organization, the American Zionist Council, to begin registering as an Israeli foreign agent.

If we leave out the Israel angle, I don’t understand the fuss about him being naked.

For me the big story is

“Politicians and staff jump into a lake”.

That’s what I’ve been telling all of them to do for years.

I don’t understand why skinhydipping is equated with sex. Does that mean the kids in the Norman Rockwell paintings are perverts?

These trips to Israel are a good chance to set congressmen up for blackmail. I wonder how many microphones and video cameras are in their rooms? Politics have always worked this way.
