PBS and CBS air Netanyahu ‘documentary’ footage sponsored by Robert Kraft

Israel/Palestine

Last summer, Peter Greenberg, CBS’s travel editor, tweeted photos of his travels around Israel with Benjamin Netanyahu. Well now he has released his documentary about the trip: “Israel, the Royal Tour,” which aired on PBS in LA and NY on March 6.Said to be a tour of his country by the prime minister, it features footage from occupied East Jerusalem.  It will air in other cities in weeks to come, from Philadelphia to Muncie.

The film exemplifies the power of the Israel lobby. It was sponsored by Robert Kraft, owner of the Patriots and a huge financial supporter of the US-Israel special relationship (whose late wife said her sons could fight for Israel but not the U.S.). But CBS promotes the documentary without a critical word (more below).

Imagine a leading US sports figure backing a rightwing leader of any other country, one who insists on the ethnocratic character of his state– what the response would be. Writes a friend who watched more than I could:

I couldn’t stomach watching the whole 60 minutes, but I can assure you it’s a major hasbara coup. Ninety minutes of Bibi Netanyahu making nice, showing the graves of his grandparents, and acting King of the Holy Land to a credulous interviewer enamoured of his host.

As far as I know, PBS and Greenberg have no plans for Palestine, the Royal Tour, hosted by Mahmoud Abbas.

When Greenberg promoted it on CBS This Morning last week– video below– Charlie Rose, Nora O’Donnell and Gayle King gushed over the doc.

Gayle King: “To see him in play clothes, Peter, too, was pretty fun to see. How did you two get together?”

Greenberg: “He couldn’t get wait to get out of the office and literally show me the country.”

Charlie Rose: “You had five or six days with the prime minister of Israel with all that’s going on in the world?…  We should probably make you a goodwill ambassador from the UN.”

Greenberg: “All the people around him said He’ll never do this, it’ll never happen. and he couldn’t actually wait to do it.”

King: “A completely different perspective than you normally see.”

The CBS video does include footage of Netanyahu injuring his left leg on a penalty kick, which caused him to have to wear a cast for a time.

Notice Greenberg’s uncritical description of the Prime Minister here. You’d never know that he has 6 million people under occupation.

PBS programming guidelines are clear. No program funded by an organization with a direct interest in the topic is acceptable for the schedule. It looks like that “rule,” like every other rule, gets thrown off the bridge when it comes to israel/zionism.

This is what passes for “journalism” on Israeli politics in the American mainstream media — pure propaganda.

This is a shocking indictment of the corruption of the American media.

The reason why Israel has such high approval ratings in the U.S. is because of this kind of non-stop propaganda. The U.S. media never even gave 1% of the massive whitewashing to the South African Apartheid regime which is gives to the Israeli Apartheid regime.

I mean, the “documentary” is one giant long infomercial and cultural programming. It’s a 90+ minute advertisement.

This is just surreal. I keep saying: someone should write a book about the way the American media is writing about Israel. It is not normal. It has a strain of desperation; we must protect its image at all costs.

        Krauss,

(Some your recent comments on the neocons have been first-rate — I read them carefully.)

Coverage of Israel in the American mainstream media has largely been one long infomercial for decades — basically feel-good propaganda leaflets handed out by the Israeli government and the Israel lobby.

If the American mainstream media had been treating Israel with as much skepticism, intellectual honesty and investigative energy as it applies to the American government, American support for Israel as measured by public opinion polls would have dropped precipitously long ago. But many owners, managers and editors of our media feel a fierce and unquestioning loyalty to Israel (and to their narrow ethnic self-interest).

The Washington Post is a perfect example.

Greenberg: “He couldn’t get wait to get out of the office and literally show me the country.”

He couldn’t wait to show you what buying the US Congress and Senate can get you.

You get to steal lands and oppress the victims while claiming to be the victim.

You get to illegally annex land without a peep from the USA who is busy proposing sanctions against Russia who is simply responding to 97% of Crimeans request to join .Hardly annexation as those being annexed have overwhelmingly approved of it.

Unlike Israel,s illegal annexations of Jerusalem and Syrian Heights.

TV lost me when they got rid of Ted Koppel anyways. Couldn’t stand the Zio controlled media anymore. No standards left. How I yearn for Uncle Walter.

Does anyone else think it’s a little too much of a coincidence that James Douglass’s “masterful” book on the JFK assassination — promoted by at least one “progressive” Zionist media outlet [specifically the CBS Evening News, a week or so ago – J.L.D.] — which omits any reference to President Kennedy’s behind-the-scenes war with Israeli Prime Minister Ben-Gurion over Tel Aviv’s undeclared nuclear weapons program was reprinted by Simon & Schuster, a division of CBS Corporation, whose president and chief executive is Leslie Moonves, who just happens to be a great-nephew of David Ben-Gurion?

I hate Israel and Netanyahu as much as anyone here but I think that Greenberg is being unjustly picked-on. If his promo-documentary on Israel would have been his one and only venture into this kind of propaganda, I’d understand, but this guy does these trips and writes propaganda about them for a living. Before this “royal tour” with the snake Netanyahu that has nothing royal about him, Greenberg did likewise documentaries with other leaders such as the king of Jordan, the prime minister of New Zealand and presidents of Mexico and Peru.

Getting back to the documentary itself, I too would be nauseated by a propaganda feature on Israel, especially on PBS that I had always deeply respected.

You make a valid point, which is why I don’t like these “sponsored tour” travelogues. There is no way a head of state is going to take you about to see the “real” country. So what is the point of having such a person be your guide?

Dennis Rodman gave us a more accurate picture of Kim Jong Un and North Korea than Kraft and Greenberg do of Netanyahu and Israel. Rodman was mocked and pilloried, as was fitting, while Greenberg is celebrated. Sad. We’ve got a long way to go.
