Hundreds of protesters descended on New York State Governor Cuomo’s midtown Manhattan office on Thursday, June 9 to stand against state-sanctioned suppression of the right to boycott. Adalah NY, Jewish Voice for Peace and Jews Say No! organized an emergency response to Cuomo’s June 5 executive order attacking the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in the State of New York. Rani Allen, president of the Palestine Solidarity Alliance of Hunter College, called Cuomo’s decision “an act of retaliation.” “I think it’s a sign of our success,” Allen told Mondoweiss. “It’s a response based on fear of our movement which has been getting larger and larger with time.”

The original campaign of putting triple parentheses around the names of Jewish newsmakers or reporters is both ominous and sinister. There is real antisemitism out there and I’m against it, and it has nothing to do with the Israeli occupation.

The night of the Tel Aviv killings culminated with a fearful Palestinian seeking refuge in a Jewish home. Till he was revealed as “a terrorist.” In an instant a person was dehumanized. And in the same way the occupation defines Palestinians as subspecies without rights.

In August 2015 Hala Gabriel talked to Mondoweiss about Road to Tantura, the documentary she is making about the massacre committed by Zionist forces in her ancestral village during the Nakba. As part of the making the film Hala and her crew spent most of the month of March 2016 among refugees from Syria in Lebanon, Greece, and Germany. Their main purpose was to locate and interview Tantura exiles for the film, and Stephen Shenfield interviews Gabriel about what she learned during her time interviewing refugees leaving the Middle East.

The Association for Investment in Popular Action Committees writes to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declaring its support for BDS and asking to be included in the list of boycott-supporting organizations the state of New York will be creating following the governor’s executive order.
