At a May 29 performance in Jerusalem, Laurie Anderson asked the audience to think of the worst things happening in the world – from Donald Trump to US school shootings, to “any shooting on any border” — and scream together, for ten seconds. That was it. The words “any shooting on any border” were her indirect reference to the Gaza massacre, and revealed a moral/political failure. She had made her audience feel warm and fuzzy.
A bill moved by Palestinian parliamentarians saying that Israel must be a “State of All Its Citizens” was not permitted to be debated in the Israeli Knesset. Even left and centrist Zionist parties blocked its movement. The Israeli parliament has declared that Israeli democracy is for Jews only, blocking the essential reform that would transform Israel toward the equality that is at the core of democracy.

Most of the big Democratic donors featured in a NYT article on presidential hopefuls raising money in NY are pro-Israel. Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren need $30 million for a campaign war chest, so they are unlikely to say anything critical of Israel. Both progressives have demonstrated as much during the Gaza massacre.
In recent days, Palestinian legislators have submitted three legislative measures before parliament to explode the illusion that Israel is a western-style liberal democracy. A bill to revoke the quasi-governmental status of international Zionist organizations like the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and the Jewish Agency that discriminate against non-Jews was defeated when all the Jewish parties voted against it.
Bassem Tamimi on why his daughter Ahed slapped an Israeli soldier. “More than 300 times they raided my house. They took my electronic devices, they shot most of my children. My wife was arrested five times. I was arrested nine times. I was tortured. My wife was shot in her leg, two years she couldn’t walk. My home is under a demolition order. After all of that somebody asked, why Ahed slapped a soldier? She must slap the soldier.”
Palestinians took to the streets of Ramallah city Sunday night, demanding that the Palestinian Authority end its sanctions on the besieged Gaza Strip that have exacerbated a humanitarian crisis in the small Palestinian enclave. The crowd chanted “With our souls and blood, we will save you Gaza” and “Shame on you, you sold Gaza in dollars.”
On Tuesday, May 15th, students at the Beacon School in New York announced a moment of silence for Palestinians killed in Gaza. Some Zionist parents of students called for the removal of the principal who allowed the commemoration. Hebh Jamal writes, “The careful targeting of academic institutions is a tactic that occurs in New York City all the time as any pro-Palestinian rhetoric is written off as terrorism or anti-semitism.”
“For me, coming here is more powerful than words. I came to complete my daughter’s mission…. We will continue working tirelessly until the whole world gets our message,” Sabreen al-Najjar, mother of slain Palestinian medic Razan al-Najjar, said yesterday at the Gaza border a week after her daughter was killed.
