If you're a blogger you get to do stuff like that: put your favorite Cream album in a headline for whatever reason–a reference to the first Jewish Prime Minister of England. Yakov writes to me this morning: "Did you happen to catch British foreign secretary David Miliband on Charlie Rose a couple of night ago? he's someone to keep an eye on.
he's jewish but has been much more critical of Israel than gordon brown. i
think hes going to be a key figure if pressure is going to be put
on new Israeli govt. some say he's the favorite to be next english pm." No I didn't see him on Charlie Rose. Wikipedia says he's a Jewish atheist, born to Polish emigres. I did see him for a minute on Andrea Williams Monday, MSNBC, and was impressed. Though I heard her talking about the need to guarantee security to the Israelis. Miliband seemed to be nodding but not agreeing.
This is my new hobbyhorse. We must guarantee security to the Israelis. Richard Perle and Dore Gold said it at AEI 3 years ago, as a basis for saying Israel could keep a military force in the Jordan Valley. Dan Kurtzer spoke of Israel's security needs, too, at Princeton. It is on the basis of such Holocaust-shadowed guarantees that the Palestinians have been denied a state for 61 years despite the U.N.'s promise. Iraqi Ambassador Samir Sumaida'ie suggested this eloquently, yesterday: We have considered the security of one group over another too long. If the security concerns of the Indians had been given precedence over the Pakistanis, there would be no Pakistani state. I bet Miliband understands this.
