bread and water shortages

From today's report by the UN office of the coordination of humanitarian affairs: 432 killed, 2200 injured. Water cut off for 30,000 people and endangered elsewhere. Bread rationing, due to wheat shortage; long lines at bakeries. The American International School in Gaza apparently destroyed (Juan Cole says that's the school the UN means).  More on the school from Ynet. Israel says it was a launching pad for rockets. Most of the buildings, overlooking Mediterranean, destroyed.

Oh and Israel has closed down the West Bank for two days. Doesn't want civil unrest.

  1. Jim Haygood says:

Israel's destruction of the American International School in Gaza is of a piece with Israel's 1967 attack on the USS Liberty — a direct attack on an evocative U.S. symbol, apparently with malice aforethought.

An appropriate, 'proportional' response would be for the U.S. to reopen the inquiry into Israel's USS Liberty massacre, as the dwindling band of surviving veterans has been pleading for lo, these 41 years.
