I bet the girls in the ‘sphere of deviance’ are better-looking

Jay Rosen has picked up an interesting diagram to show how certain subjects (the Iraq war, Israel policy) are beyond debate in US politics. There are 3 spheres of the discourse: the inner sphere of consensus (Ken Pollack), surrounded by the sphere of "legitimate controversy" (Chris Matthews). And the outer sphere: "the sphere of deviance." You've arrived!

Frank Zappa observed the ugliest part of your body is your mind. Women in the sphere of deviance are more beautiful.

these decisions are often invisible to the people making them

The diagram and even one conclusion contain Jungian elements.

I'm a little unclear on something. Are Hannah Arendt's "conscious pariahs" a subset within the "sphere of deviance", or is this more like one of those 'shifting paradigm' thingys? Is 'string theory' somehow involved?
