Why the mainstream media are sinking

Washington Post treats Israel's seizure of the Gaza-bound boat "Spirit of Humanity" as an occasion for snarky review of the career of Cynthia McKinney. No mention of the Gaza boat on the NY Times website, that I could find anyway.

When the media is taking a break from the koolade they are sinking. Nobody gives a crap about the floating circus, Weiss. We all recognize it for what it is, a stupid political stunt designed to make it easier for weapons to be smuggled into Gaza.

what is the blues i asked myself ain't it like dancing on the head of an elf of ignorance and then of bliss you can't make them up steps like this anyways the pain goes away just like the weather and another day and in my heart i know what's true brother i tell you that's why i'm blue

  3. Bruno says:

No mention of the Free Gaza boat, Cynthia McKinney or the seizure in the Guardian either. Media blackout.

  4. MRW says:

”Why the mainstream media are sinking.” Yes. This sinking does relate directly to the phony coverage of Israel. Absolutely. It has nothing to do with the economy. The MSM showed its inability to tell the truth, or seek the truth, with Israel. And Americans are noticing. And especially Americans who were roasted to express solidarity with the Holocaust lest they be labeled anti-semitic. This is a campaign that has come home to roost. HuffPo is next, unless it understands this and makes an about-face….and starts supporting American views. [There were 70,000+ HuffPo responses to the Iran election; about 900 HuffPo allowed to the Gaza war In Dec.] You'll notice that MySpace is now dead. Murdoch’s investment is gone, finito. Dont believe me? Google it. Facebook is trying to become Twitter. And Hasbara is out in full force trying to decry Twitter names it feels should be blocked because ideas are getting through that it doesn't like. Those on Twitter told to block this name or that name need to ignore the instruction for a while.

When it comes to Israel the USA media is like the Chinese media–or Iran's… Where's my country?

  6. Thom says:

Gee, in a military blockade that has been going on for two years now, a boat has been stopped. Stop the presses. Seriously, how is a boat getting stopped by a blockade news? It wasn't even fired on, much less sunk. Just boarded and towed to shore. Nobody got killed or even injured. A big yawn as far as news is concerned.

  7. Shingo says:

Seriously, how is a boat getting stopped by a blockade news? It's news because: a) the blockade is illegal b) the boat was carrying a former member of Congress c) it bebunks the myth that Israel are allowing basic amenities to enter Gaza d) they did this having rammed the last boat she was on "A big yawn as far as news is concerned." Translation: Another example of criminality from the rogue state of Israel and I wish it woudl go away.

  8. Ishmail says:

Nobody cares about the murderous government in Gaza. Nobody cares about their supporters.

  9. Ishmail says:

We wish you would go away.

  10. Richard Witty says:

It will take deaths for the boats to reach the press. And, then it will not be clear. It will take Hamas renouncing violence as a means to be clear.

  11. Shingo says:

"It will take Hamas renouncing violence as a means to be clear. " Arafat tried that, as well as recognizing Israel, and all it did was get him killed.

  12. Shingo says:

I know you would Ishmail, but as for the "we", the voices in your head don't count.

  13. Shafiq says:

I'd call it as newsworthy as the Somalian pirates hijacking various ships

  14. Shafiq says:

Well why not make it both ways? Let Israel AND Hamas renounce violence. Or are states justified in using violence against whomever they want?

  15. Richard Witty says:

It did make the Israeli papers. It must seem absurd that the Mondoweiss/Blumenthal exclusive made the mass media, but the Gaza boat didn't.

  16. Jake in Jerusalem says:

When Cynthia McKinney and the other Friends of Jihad aboard are held for ransom, then it might be the same. Instead, they will be prosecuted and deported, as any normal country would do. Hijacking, Ransom and Kidnapping are time-honored Islamic traditions, but the way… Like in Somalia, for example…. or in Gaza for that matter…

  17. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Arafat most likely died of AIDS. Don't blame that on Israel, too, now… Arafat never recognized Israel. He did declare, not long before he died, that Palestineans will fight Israel "until the last Palestinean boy and girl". Jihad forever…. Peace never… And that is the situation today, as well…

  18. Shafiq says:

And Israel too, it seems :-) And no, instead Israel has decided to steal its cargo instead. All those Medicines of Mass Destruction

  19. Chauncey says:

Geez, just take your fellow countrymen up to Massada, and do the world a great favour! know what I mean, nudge, nudge, wink, wink!

  20. David says:

Hamas could issue a statement saying they renounced violence. Israeli spokespeople would say they didn't believe it. The issue would die–just as the letter from Hamas to Obama calling for int'l law was completely ignored. I would love it if Hamas and Israel both said, "we renounce violence." In the meantime, we support those Israeli and Palestinian voices working for justice and peace, not sit around and wait.

  21. ILA says:

The Gaza boat forgot to pony up WAPO "Access money" for coverage and a place at the table. http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20090702/pl_poli... Their unseaworthy looking boat probably cost less than the $25k it takes to be a player.

  24. Mythbuster says:

    Apparently, they forgot to twitter.

  25. Mythbuster says:

And don't forget macaroni. The Zionist Entity is trying to defeat the spread of Weapons of Mass Pasta.

  27. Mythbuster says:

We all know God struck down Sharon. Hey, that makes about as much sense as your post.

  28. DaveS says:

Nor did the NYTimes cover the ramming of the Dignity, which was carrying medical supplies to Gaza, in Dec 2008, even though CNN made a big deal of it because their reporter was on board

  29. Todd says:

I'd also say that the MSM is dying because it is viewed as hostile to the majority, as well as being dishonest and neglecful of its duty in covering and protecting the public's interests. It's not hard to grasp the fact that many in the MSM despise middle America. Is it then a surprise that fewer people are willing to pay to be insulted and lied to? When the best I can expect is dishonest spin, ignoring the MSM makes sense.

  30. Ishmail says:

So you are admitting that the Palestinians murdered Arafat. Nice confession.

  31. Tuyzentfloot says:

The Guardian just posted an item about the boat. The ship was "within miles of the Gaza shore". My printed newspaper (De Morgen, in dutch) has no mention yet. Their last Gaza item was about the Amnesty International report. It ended with an interesting counterbalancing comment that "the report did not mention the case of Gilad Shalit who.." etc. I qualify De Morgen as good mainstream. They rely on the NYTimes a lot. They carry translated op-eds, Friedman often, also Brooks and Krugman.

  32. Thom says:

    a) Blockades are acts of war. They are legal for the country doing them. If the country being blockaded doesn't like it, they can pass a law against it, but those laws are irrelevant. Just like any law that makes any legitimate act of war illegal. Also boring. Oooh, an act of war by Country A that is at war with Country B is illegal in Country B. Like I said, yawn. b) Lots of former members of Congress out there. Some of them do stupid shit, doesn't make it important news. As I recall, the member of Congress left in disgrace after punching a cop, and her dad went to the media and blamed the Jews. She has done this before. When she does it again, it isn't news. c) It does nothing of the kind. There is no myth that Israelis are allowing unregulated and uninspected goods to be smuggled in (when it can avoid it anyway). The Israelis allow basic amenities in, just not this particular blockade runner. d) So basically, because there was a boating accident the last time Congresswoman Crazy tried to get in, but there wasn't this time, it is news? Nope. Still a big yawn. BTW, McKinney and her friends falsified their planned port of call. Is that a crime?

  33. Mythbuster says:

Great post MRW. The internet is not "corporationable." We can instantly compare the news to the corporate "news" and the disparity is not pretty. I would posit that the proximate cause of death was the Iraq War. The infamous "embed." The relentless cheerleading. The silence of Iraqi casualties. The Rumsfeld poetry readings, disguised as Pentagon Briefings. The media died in March 2003. They are only now smelling the corpse.

  37. jen says:

Boo Hoo – the media is snarky with Cynthia McKook — the anti-Semite racist wingnut & failed "politician" whose only fan base left is Hamas So only lefty anti-Semites can be snarky? The MSM has to be nice, Phil? Boo Hoo , Boo Hoo

  38. Tuyzentfloot says:

I know. But you have to take in account how the readers relate to the subject. When Krugman talks about US internal economics the readers can't connect to it. Friedman often talks about world affairs which is easier. So it took a long time before they ran a Krugman piece. They even didn't mention him, called it an editorial. I mailed them on that(a rare thing),asking if they would mind if readers would conclude that Krugman's piece represented the housestyle of the paper – or something along that line. The next time they put his name in a big red font.

  39. Tuyzentfloot says:

I can feel your hate, jen.

  40. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Israel has done none of those things. Your are slandering. As always.

“Poetry readings.” Great line. And thanks for the praise. Backatcha.

  43. Joe NYC says:

Jewish Democrats colluded with Republicans to replace Cynthia McKinney while President Clinton did nothing to support the re-nomination of a fellow Democrat. He feared the Israel Lobby more than he supported the Democratic Party. Read carefully what the Atlanta Constitution printed about this at the time.

one of the funniest sites on the entire internet: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?it... To see those yarmulke-clad goof balls scraping up Nazi body parts on the street never fails to lift my spirits! Long live Palestine. Long live Jewish dignity. DEATH to the israelis, their children, their elderly, their unborn.

  45. Shafiq says:

Yes, obviously. The Gaza boat just disappeared magically as punishment by God for trying to aid the evil Arabs

  46. Shafiq says:

Do you know what Death to the Arabs means? I bet you're one of those that likes vandalising Arab homes and writing phrases like this on their doors

There was no stealing of medicines. OR anything else. You lie. This is very Honorable in Shia Islam. Is that what you are?

  48. Jake in Jerusalem says:

You bet wrong. You ALWAYS seem to bet wrong. al Shafiq, bring us some FACTS sometimes! Sometimes?????

  49. shafiq says:

Err….yes there was. And no, I'm not a Shia Muslim, not that yould know the difference

  50. shafiq says:

Al-shafiq…funny. how old are you again? And I do bring facts, it's a shame you prefer to ignore them.

  51. shafiq says:

Err…yes there was. Or maybe you'd prefer if I called it 'confiscation'
