Angry Arab As'ad AbuKhalil, as contemptuous of Arab leaders as I am here of American ones, has translated the Iraqi poet Mudhaffar An-Nawwab in a desperately sad verse:
"…and the sun could rise setting
due to our sadness,
hunger speaks since our birth
and death and sand grow old with us
foreigners–no matter how much we fight–
and the eunuch-rulers are the true Arabs
a ruler whose stature and dignity
are beneath this shoe of mine…"
