Israel destroys el-Wafa hospital as staff evacuates all patients

El-Wafa Hospital

The Israeli military has destroyed el-Wafa rehabilitation hospital in the Gaza Strip, after first targeting the facility with five missiles on July 11, 2014. The Israeli military began striking the building around 8:oo pm this evening and within two hours all hospital staff and patients had evacuated the only rehabilitation center in the Gaza Strip. As they departed what remained intact from the medical center burned to the ground.

“It’s already destroyed,” said Basman Alashi, director of el-Wafa, continuing, “I don’t know how much is left of it, but we have evacuated all of our patients. We lost power, there was a fire in the building.”

Alashi spoke to me via telephone from his house in Gaza, unable to cross the Israeli shelling to reach the hospital. “I left the hospital at seven and within two hours they had bombed the hospital.” Shells hit every floor of the building, and a fire spread throughout.

After the Israeli army began striking the hospital, Alashi and el-Wafa’s 25 nurses made desperate arrangements to relocate the last 17 patients. Many of those in el-Wafa’s care are paralyzed and are connected to oxygen support. Some of the nurses left the building to seek help, braving Israeli fire on the streets in order to track down an ambulance with an oxygen tank.

“My nurses were unable to stand on their feet because of the smoke and the heat,” said Alashi. El-Wafa’s staff managed to evacuate all of the patients to a nearby medical clinic inside of a hotel. “The ones who could stay, stayed, but the ones who lost consciousness and lost control, we moved,” he continued.

Only after the facility was under heavy fire and in the process of being abandoned did Alashi receive a phone call from the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) relaying a message from the Israeli army. A women who identified herself as a delegate of the ICRC said, “the Israelis asked ‘how much time do you need to evacuate,’” said Alashi, answering “two hours.” However, within an hour when the woman called back and said the Israeli army “will halt the bombings, and not bomb the hospital any more,” the facility was already in rubble. Alashi responded, “Are you joking, are you making a mockery of me? I told her it’s too late they have already destroyed it.”

“I said that the Red Cross is cooperating with the Israelis to destroy the hospital,” Alashi continued, recounting his earlier conversation with the representative from the ICRC. “I’m going to take you, the Red Cross and the Israelis to the International Criminal Court,” he announced before hanging up the telephone.

el Wafa Hospital, struck by missile on July 11

When I spoke to Alashi his voice was dry and sunken compared to when we talked a few days ago after the facility was first hit by Israeli fire on July 11. Five missiles had knocked the hospital taking out exterior walls and causing significant damage to the fourth floor. After the assault, patients who could be cared for at home were discharged and the remaining were relocated to the first floor.

Alashi had to rush to get off of the telephone with me; he was on his way to finally check on his patients now in the safer Sahaba clinic. He concluded that Israel’s destruction of the hospital would only hurt their military goals. A devastated Alashi said:

‘The Israelis and the Red Cross have destroyed the only rehab clinic in the West Bank and Gaza. They are not solving the issues; they are creating more suicide bombers. You cannot solve issues like this at all. They are the ones creating suicide bombings, not us.’

“Justified Vengeance”, The Pretext for Bombing Gaza: Was the Netanyahu Government behind the Killings of the Three Israeli Teenagers?.

If it’s too good to be true, the farcical facets of falsehoods rear their ugly heads [again].

Did ‘pre-Israel’ need deaths as well to justify its hastily ushered in ‘birth?’?

      Re “Justified Vengeance”.
Thanks for the link/ Chossudovsky / Global Research.
Right: “a strategy called ‘the hornet’s nest’ … [as a] solution for the protection of the Jewish state”.
Endless, incalculable force, on a yearly basis, seems necessary to “protect” and prop the Jewish State from the threat of tipping over into a regular democratic republic tied to a bill of rights. First they had that catastrophic event, a new Pearl Harbor, on US soil, creating the global war of terror. Now they have resorted to creating a ‘hornet’s nest’. Sure, intelligence agencies think outside the box. They leave no choice but to demand proof concerning every information coming out of them, starting even from the deaths of the 3 teens themselves, which, unless you know different, is only backed by a stately funeral ceremony, and some low-keyed, pierce-eyed, quiescent sets of parents.

I wonder what the Presbyterians are thinking right now.
“Rabbi Rick Jacobs, head of the Union for Reform Judaism, which represents the largest American Jewish movement, said the Presbyterian meeting will be “a moment for us to counter the narrative of the BDS community.”
“This vote will have wider repercussions,” said Jacobs, who will be in Detroit for the event. “This is a debate for the very fundamental legitimacy of the state of Israel.”

    Fun DA Mental

“After the vote, Jacobs said the denomination as a whole is no longer “a partner for joint work on Israel-Palestine peace issues.” “We need to be working together on this vital issue and there cannot be a true partnership when one side endorses positions that delegitimize the other’s rights and core values,” Rabbi Jacobs added. “
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” denounced as “disgraceful” the Presbyterian Church’s divestment from companies equipping Israeli activities in the West Bank and its blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Asked on the NBC-TV interview program if he was “troubled” by the Presbyterian Church USA’s move on Friday, when it voted to withdraw its $21 million in investments from Caterpillar, Motorola and Hewlett-Packard, Netanyahu said, “It should trouble all people of conscience and morality because it’s so disgraceful.”
Seeming to address his remarks to American Christians, he went on to hold up Israel as “a beacon of civilization and moderation” that “protects Christians – Christians are persecuted throughout the Middle East,” and contrasted it to the rest of Middle East, which he characterized as being riddled “by religious hatred, by savagery of unimaginable proportions.”

      • Rusty Pipes on July 17, 2014, 8:07 pm

This cuts both ways: “there cannot be a true partnership when one side endorses positions that delegitimize the other’s rights and core values.” Presbyterians have the right to free speech and to free association. Stewardship of resources (including investments), peacemaking and seeking justice for the oppressed are core Presbyterian values. When the leadership of major Jewish organizations delegitimize Presbyterians’ rights and values, they make it difficult to work together as partners.

      • AbigailOK on July 18, 2014, 2:01 pm

        @Rusty Pipes

It also shows the mindset of someone who says such highly undemocratic, and even nasty things. Indeed, a denial of the right to free speech. But that is a no-brainer in many many Jewish congregations nowadays regarding the state of Israel. Without thinking, Jacobs and Netanyahu always show their true colors and project their own character/deeds/thinking onto another. Very telling. Who falls for that, I tell ya…

    – 10 people blown to smithereens as they watch the World Cup at a Gaza beach cafe
    – 18 members of the Al Batsh family killed all at once when Israel shelled their house
    – calls for genocide of Palestinians widespread on Israeli social media
    – killing of four young boys as they play soccer at the beach in front of hotel filled w/ international journos
    – deliberate destruction of El Wafa Hospital

    • can of worms on July 18, 2014, 6:38 am

What next? Has the country finally passed the tipping point?

You are looking for the point at which it would be impossible for any outsiders to defend the regime of ethnic privilege in Israel anymore. They have done so much, you say. Now you are asking what the Israelis would ultimately have to do, perhaps you are asking what they could be made to do.

You are looking for the point at which they would no longer be able to control this discourse.

You are looking for the point at which economic and geostrategic muscle no longer determines this discourse.

You see how grim it is. And yet… many different things will eventually come together to make this system fall. Another moral line that Israel will be forced to have crossed, another line of countries reverting to the gold reserve. There is already too much strain on the structure and it is fracturing.

    • AbigailOK on July 18, 2014, 2:07 pm

They want to show the world how very democratic they are and in want of real true peace.

Also, according to the war criminal Netanyahu who can only act because the US allows him to Israel is supposedly “a beacon of civilization and moderation” that “protects Christians – Christians are persecuted throughout the Middle East,” and contrasted it to the rest of Middle East, which he characterized as being riddled “by religious hatred, by savagery of unimaginable proportions”. (I copied the quote from seafoid (thank you) Gosh, this is exactly what the state of Israel (and the terrorist organizations before its establishment) have been doing all along! Many Christians have left for those reasons or are stuck with enormous discrimination against them.

  6. seafoid on July 17, 2014, 6:33 pm

Dershowitz’s death will be as significant as the death of Thatcher
“During a recent radio interview, I was asked what I would do if I were a resident of Gaza, suffering from unemployment and Israeli rockets counterattacks? My answer was simple: I would try to overthrow the Hamas regime and make a deal with Israel under which Gaza would give up its rockets in exchange for a “Marshall Plan” that would feed and normalize its residence. Such a plan would require international inspection of imports and the end of the “tunnel economy” that has enriched Hamas leaders and allowed the importation of lethal rockets. The current Hamas leadership is unlikely to accept any plan that takes away their money and weapons, but if the people of Gaza were to demand change—a real “Gaza Spring”—anything is possible.

Many years ago Golda Meir engaged in hyperbolic overgeneralization when she said that peace will come “when Palestinians love their children more than they hate Israel.” Most Palestinians love their children. Many do hate Israel, because they have been taught to hate for generations. But more and more of them are coming to realize that the real enemy is not Israel, which left the Gaza Strip in 2005 and offered to leave most of the West Bank in 2000, 2001 and 2007. The real enemies of the Palestinians are those Hamas leaders who do in fact love Palestinian children less than they hate Israel. That’s why they are prepared to use these children as human sacrifices in their efforts to destroy the nation state of the Jewish people.

There will be peace between Israel and the Palestinians only when the Palestinians overthrow or vote out the violent theocrats and kleptocrats of Hamas—or unless Hamas can be induced by the citizens of Gaza to change its destructive policies. The alternative will be a Gaza in which civilians continue to pay the heavy price for Hamas’ hatred of Israel and contempt for its own citizens. ”

    • Sumud on July 17, 2014, 6:56 pm

Many do hate Israel, because they have been taught to hate for generations.

I’d like the Dershbag to relocate to Gaza so he can teach them all the way.

Does he have kids? He should take them too, and they call all send happy thoughts to Israel as the bombs fall around them.

He isn’t 1/10 of the man Izzeldin Abuelaish is, Dershbag hates now and what have Palestinians ever done to him?

  7. Man Iac on July 17, 2014, 6:35 pm

Israel reportage last night (Thursday) had it that rockets under the hospital were “bombarded” (הופצצו) . If this is so, Hamas had made the hospital into a military target. Israel gave warning to evacuate the patients, and the evacuation was completed in good time.

“Stangl was no sadist, but took pride and pleasure in his work, running the death camp like clockwork. He came to regard his victims as “cargo to be despatched”, recalling in an interview at the end of his life with the journalist Gitta Sereny that he rarely saw them as individuals – “it was always a huge mass… they were naked, packed together, running, being driven with whips.”
They were so weak- they allowed everything to happen – to be done to them. They were people with whom there was no common ground, no possibility of … I could never understand how they could just give in as they did.”

And the people of Gaza are not going to give in. Israel hates them for that.

    • Kay24 on July 17, 2014, 6:52 pm

The Palestinians are resilient people. Israel will never get rid of Hamas, they have tried many times before, and Hamas always prevail. Only the civilians will pay for the fury of Israel, and feel their cursed weapons on their bodies.

    • Qualtrough on July 18, 2014, 2:32 am

Thank you for sharing that Daniel.

One thing we should all keep in mind is that among the 1980 wounded there will be many who are paralyzed and/or severely burned and/or lost limbs, eyes and other vital organs. Many are small children who will be forever scarred both mentally and physically by what they have undergone. These are not the sprained ankles, shock, and heart palpitations that make up the ‘wounded from rocket attack’ figures that Israelis like to bandy about, which in any case are tiny by comparison. All this, and then the survivors needing ongoing treatment may not have a home to go back to and will be living in areas with an infrastructure totally destroyed by Israel.

“Military demand to evacuate rehabilitative hospital in Gaza unlawful
B’Tselem has discovered that the Israeli military included the al-Wafaa rehabilitative hospital in a-Shuja’iyeh neighborhood in the demand it issued to residents of the a-Shuja’iyeh and a-Zeitun neighborhoods to evacuate their homes by today, July 16, 2014 at 8:00 AM. Hospital Director Basman al-‘Ashi told B’Tselem over the phone that the hospital received a recorded message last night at around 11:10 PM, saying that a-Shuja’iyeh residents must leave the area and move north to the city center. Shortly thereafter, at around 11:30 PM, the hospital received another phone call from a person saying he was from the military who repeated the demand to evacuate the hospital specifically.
According to al-‘Ashi, the hospital currently has 17 patients, between the ages of 14 and 95, all suffering from different degrees of paralysis. There are also some thirty staff members in the hospital at this time and a number of international activists. Al-‘Ashi clarified that there is no intention to evacuate the hospital, noting that this was one of the only hospitals in Gaza to offer rehabilitative treatment for patients in these conditions.
The military’s demand to evacuate the hospital is unlawful. A hospital is not a military target and the military may not target it even after it is evacuated. The information B’Tselem has indicates that the hospital was ordered to evacuate as part of the sweeping demand to evacuate the entire neighborhood, in blatant disregard for the fact that evacuating a rehabilitation institution is a complicated task which may put lives at risk. There is no other rehabilitative institute in the area where patients can be transferred. These patients require special conditions that cannot be recreated. Transferring hospital patients is complicated and dangerous at the best of times. Under the current conditions in Gaza, the danger is mortal.

Remember the not Anne Frank Dutch Shoah story
So many parallels with the Nazis

“The Apeldoornse Bos was a Jewish psychiatric institution, amid the forests near Apeldoorn, Jews were treated for psychiatric disorders using modern methods from 1909 onwards.
The Apeldoornse Bos expanded rapidly and by 1938 the institution had 900 patients, including seventy-four mentally retarded and wayward children at the Paedagogium Achisomog.
The evacuation from the Jewish mental hospital in Apeldoorn, in Holland on the 21 January 1943 remains one of the most horrible chapters in the dark history of the holocaust.
Dr Jacob Presser recounts the terrible scenes:

They were escorted into the lorries with pushes and blows, men, women and children, most of them inadequately clad for the cold winter night. As one eyewitness later recalled; “I saw them place a row of patients, many of them older women on mattresses at the bottom of one lorry, and then load another load of human bodies on top of them. So crammed were these lorries that the Germans had a hard job to put up the tailboards.”
From the very start, the patients were thrown together indiscriminately, children with dangerous lunatics, imbeciles with those who were not fit to be moved. The lorries sped to the station, the station-master at Apeldoorn who stood by the train throughout, provided more eyewitness particulars. At first everything went smoothly.
The earliest arrivals, mainly young men, went quietly into the freight wagons at the front of the train, forty in each, when the station-master opened the ventilators, the Germans immediately closed them again.
….The nurses were loaded onto the lorries and roared off, swaying towards the gas chambers, not a single nurse or patient survived. “
