Lobbyist tells Eliot Engel he has ‘the blood of hundreds of Palestinian children on his hands’

At the World Can’t Wait event about Gaza in New York last Thursday night, Josh Ruebner, a Washington lobbyist as policy director of the US Campaign to End the Occupation (and author of the new book Shattered Hopes: Obama’s Failure to Broker Middle East Peace), told about an encounter with Eliot Engel, the ceaseless advocate for Israel as a congressman from Westchester/the Bronx.

The encounter came during an event on Palestinian human rights on Capitol Hill two weeks agoThe hall was jammed, and Ruebner reflected that our leaders are going to be surprised by the shift in the discourse that is taking place at the grass roots.

This is from minute 11:

Israel has clearly lost the debate. Its supporters in the United States have clearly lost control of the discourse…. We need to engage our public officials and tell them, Enough is enough. If we don’t, if we shrug our shoulders and we give up, and say the Israel lobby is too strong and too powerful, then what’s the dynamic that we’ve created? We’ve created a dynamic where the only people who our members of Congress are hearing from are people who are in the Israel lobby!

Eliot Engel

Eliot Engel

And now some of you might consider the traditional forms of lobbying a little too tame for your lights. Let a thousand flowers bloom. I think you all know how to step up the tactics, and step up the tactics we need to do. When we did the congressional brieifng… in the break between, I went out into the hall and who did I run into but Rep. Eliot Engel of New York City… And I said to him, “Rep. Engel, it is time to end military aid to Israel.” And he looked at me kind of shocked, like he didn’t hear me correctly.

He’s like, “Did you say end aid to Israel. No! I support increasing aid to Israel!”

And I told him that he had the blood of hundreds of Palestinian children on his hands. And you know what he did? He just shrugged it off and got on the elevator. Another day of business in Congress. So we’ve got to work on our elected officials and we’ve got our work cut out for us, that’s for sure.

Ruebner is absolutely RIGHT. If we just shrug our shoulders and give up and in, we’re no better than Engel.

(I can’t listen to the video right now, but am looking forward to hearing it later:)) Thanks!

I recall during the Iraq war, the linguistic currency turned on the word “civilized” – with both Tony bLIAR and Bush spouting this.
This time around it is “barbaric”
Surely, when Eliot Engel shrugs his shoulders at the suggestion that hundreds of Palestinian children were killed due in part to his sending military aid to Israel – the word barbaric is apposite to say the least.

Their attitude is really bad. They openly show disregard for the loss of Palestinian lives, even little children. What are they thinking in their warped little minds? That Arab lives being lost, or little Arab babies being blown up, are acceptable? If these were Jewish lives, would he simply shrug and get away? These congress people are despicable and to even want to send MORE aid (and most probably more weapons and ammunition) after what we have seen and heard, simply show the lack of concern for humanity, deliberately ignoring the casualty numbers, and drinking the zio koolaid has made them unable to be decent human beings whose first priority is the safety and security of unarmed civilians. We have voted for a bunch of morally corrupt zionists calling themselves Americans.

    What he didn’t say was

    http://democrats.foreignaffairs.house.gov/press_display.asp?id=1294
“This again could be anyone’s son—anyone’s. All of us who are parents, people who are not parents, just imagine when you kiss your child goodbye, he goes to school, and you think he’s coming back and then suddenly he doesn’t come back. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare.”

but obviously Palestinian parents have no emotions or feel no love so there was no need to repeat the formula.

    Greetings,
Very moving of Mr. J. R..
I love his including O’Boomers as a fall guy too, all presidents have nothing to do with saving lives of palestinians because Israel is their vassal on the Arab Frontier.
All de monies & weapons that Israel has received from the US is but 1% of The US Budget. They can give much more. They know that Israel vants more land & vants to be alone in de Holyland, no Problem. The next president will act as all the others have. BDS can if it spirals upwardly in time convince US & Euro Corp. to get on de Band Wagon gen Israel.

Under the vassalage system, the vassal pays its overlord its tutelage. Who would be the vassal in that relationship?

An example of Engel’s concern for the deaths of 2 Israeli soldiers, and the fake abduction of a soldier. He also shows he cares for the safety of Israeli people, no shrugging it off here. Soldiers are fair target in a war.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms Hamas’s breach of the negotiated humanitarian ceasefire, which resulted in the killing of two Israeli soldiers and abduction of 2nd Lt. Hadar Goldin. This abhorrent violation came less than two hours into the ceasefire and threw to the curb assurances given to the international community. This only serves as further proof that Israel is well within its right to do what it must to ensure the safety of its citizens. I call on Hamas to immediately release Lt. Goldin and for those with influence over the group to urge them to do so, as well as abide by the agreed upon terms of the ceasefire.”

How much does he love Israel? This much:
” Shortly after entering Congress, he sponsored a resolution declaring Jerusalem the undivided capital of Israel.[43] ” Wikipedia.

Nothing says love like declaring disputed land as the “undivided capital” of an alien nation, even if the rest of the world (including your own country) does not recognize it.

Nope. But this made the Wapo today:

“JERUSALEM — The Israeli eyeglass-shop owner accused of burning an Arab teenager alive last month led a “hunting expedition” to kill a Palestinian to avenge the murder of three Israeli yeshiva students, prosecutors say.

Many Israelis say they were appalled to see one of their own charged with murdering an Arab child. The revenge killing undercut Israel’s sense of moral superiority and exposed Israel to charges that Jewish extremists follow the same rules as Palestinian terror cells.

The criminal indictment against Yosef Haim Ben-David, 30, portrays him as a remorseless night stalker who prowled Arab neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, armed with bottles of gasoline and plastic handcuffs, looking for a weak, vulnerable victim.

Ben-David’s attorneys have suggested that their client is mentally ill. Israeli police reports say he was taking medication for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Court filings show he was arrested briefly in 2012 after he told his therapist that he thought about strangling his infant daughter.

In a recent courtroom appearance, Ben-David proclaimed, “I am the messiah!” — an outburst that the families of his Arab victims fear was a calculated attempt to evade justice with an insanity defense.

The crime has roiled the deeply conservative, ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Har Nof, where the defendant’s father, a prominent rabbi named Saadiah Ben-David, raised 13 children and teaches classes in Jewish law at a yeshiva.

“This is against our Holy Torah and against the law,” the father was quoted as telling the Israeli Ynet news agency.”

        Way more here:

        http://www.haaretz.com/news/national/.premium-1.611184

“Two hundred meters from Morel Malka and Mahmoud Mansour’s wedding celebration in the Shemesh Aduma (Red Sun) wedding hall in the industrial area of Rishon Letzion, lined with supermarkets and other events halls, a counter demonstration was held by the Lehava organization – a demonstration of pure hatred. The hatred oozed from the looks of the protestors, dripped with their sweat, passed in the screams and the poisoned air.
Some 200 people from Lehava (a Hebrew acronym for “Preventing Assimilation in the Holy Land,” meaning “flame” in Hebrew) came to try to destroy the couple’s happiness, a large number in shirts saying “Lehava – the Jewish Honor Guard.”
“Ahmed Tibi is dead,” they screamed, “Mohammed is dead,” “Death to Arabs.”
“Everyone knows the truth, but don’t given them reasons for an indictment,” one of the demonstration’s organizers tried to calm people. But the crowd never stopped abusing the air.
When someone started calling “Death to Leftists,” one of the organizers tried to cover it with “Leftists are Jews.” But the man next to me explained: “The leftists are worse than the Arabs. They are a mixed multitude,” and earned respect.
Toward the end of the demonstration, the matter of the wedding was forgotten and only the intermixed “Death to Arabs” and “Death to Leftists” remained. That’s the problem with extremism. There is always someone who outflanks you, faster and more sophisticated. If once the Yad L’Achim organization set the tone, then Benzi Gopstein from Lehava – who is far more media savvy – stole the show from them. And now Gopstein is the sign of moderation, the responsible adult who is trying to calm the calls to kill Arabs, so as to emphasize the original idea of the protest.
“The people of Israel are responsible for one another, we are not a people for all the peoples,” said the organizers – and suddenly a vehicle playing Hassidic music arrives, it’s not clear from where. Many of the young people abandon Gopstein and Itamar Ben Gvir, the learned attorney for Lehava, and dance on the side, leaving him with the sign “Our teacher Moses is crying.” He is speaking in front of the Rishon Letzion veterinary institute about the Arab village where Mansour will take Malka, even though Mohammed is really Mahmoud and lives in Jaffa – which is not a village.
Israel Harel in a stylish gray hat, it seems with a shofar [ram’s horn trumpet] in his hand, talks about how there can be miracles and reminds us of the miracles during the war.
“Because of weddings like this [there are] all the problems in the war,” says someone next to me. It is hard to understand what Harel is saying since someone is banging away crazily with a bottle of water.
Gopstein wants to calm the flames of hatred. “Everyone wants for us to say Mohammed is dead,” he says, and tries to tell them “but we will not let them.” But next to him they are screaming “and that is what we’ll do.” Gopstein and Ben Gvir also talk about Mohammed the groom. When somebody corrects them, Gopstein says “Mohammed, Mahmoud, it doesn’t matter.” And someone completes what he is saying, “All the same shit.”
One of the protestors, in a light purple shirt, explains to a foreign television crew: “It’s not racism. We simply fear that because of the assimilation we will become extinct. The Arabs do not want us alive so it is important that the Arabs go extinct and that we humiliate them.”
“Let them bring out an Arab woman who wants to marry a Jew, I want to see that,” said the man in the purple shirt, his eyes inflamed with disgust, as if they bring out and give away women in the industrial area of Rishon.
It is not just a demonstration of hate for Arabs or leftists, but also for modern women, who can do what they want. Facing the demonstrators, the organizers tried to keep a different tome: “Even if Morel converted to Islam she is still our sister, we don’t give up on a single Jew. A Jewish wedding should have been here. Soon the bride will come to dance with us here.” “

        Haaretz editorial:

“…The right of Israelis to marry the person of their choice appears to be in danger. Though Israeli society can somehow accept mixed couples of Christians and Jews, as is sometimes the case with immigrants from the former Soviet Union, racism emerges when it comes to mixed marriages between Jews and Arabs.

Malka and Mansour violated no law, of course. The threats against them are the kind that would happen in a fanatical theocracy in the developing world — not in a Western democracy that Israel pretends to be.

Israeli society is in no danger of any assimilation wave. It faces a much greater danger: the transformation into a backward, fundamentalist society in which religious and racial purity are maintained by force…. ”

Of course, to be fair, it wasn’t just the Nazis. We in the United States had our own antimiscegenation laws, not struck down by the Supreme Court until 1967 in Loving v. Virginia.

And, while the laws struck down by Loving were limited to 17 states in the South (although a South that included Delaware, Oklahoma, and West Virginia), just a few years earlier there had been such laws in 14 other states, almost all outside the South, including California and Oregon. As interpreted by the Arizona Supreme Court in 1942, Arizona’s antimiscegenation law (not repealed until 1962) prohibited persons of mixed race from marrying anyone.

An excellent history of America’s antimiscegenation laws is Peggy Pascoe’s What Comes Naturally: Miscegenation Law and the Making of Race in America.

Do any of these people do half as much for the people who elected them as they do for a foreign country? How dysfunctional is a system where a foreign government demands and gets their attention and their votes? And how can’t they see that? Are they so supine and credulous that they accept the donation in exchange for any integrity they might have had? And don’t care about pissing on the people who elected them. Hey, let’s siphon off some more badly need tax dollars and give it away to some wealthy foreigners, who will look after us. Great idea.
