Video: Trump’s funding cut to UNRWA affects millions of Palestinian refugees

on 18 Comments

Just days after Palestinian children returned back to school, the Trump administration announced it would be cutting all funding to UNRWA — the UN agency responsible for providing life saving services to 5 million Palestinian refugees across the Middle East.

Mondoweiss spoke with some of those affected, who expressed fears of losing essential services like food assistance, jobs, water, and most importantly, education.

This video shows exactly why UNRWA must be eliminated:

UNRWA’s responsility is [to ensure] that Palestinians refugees remain refugees.

    • Talkback on September 12, 2018, 9:34 am

Only a mondonut and his likes can pervert the meaning of this statement and quote him falsely by ommitting the half sentence that follows. That Palestinian refugees shouldn’t loose their status and with it the rights they have according to international and human rights law until they are able to choose for repatriation or compensation.

No, modonut needs to see a refugee organisation “eliminated”. Can it be more disgusting and inhumane? Only towards the ‘goy’, right?

      • mondonut on September 12, 2018, 9:54 am

Not false, I provided an exact quote. And it stands on its own, nothing that follows addresses the responsibilities of the UNRWA.

And yes, I stand by the comment it should be eliminated. And no, it would not be inhumane, all legitimate refugees should be provided access to the same UN refugee resources as the rest of the world.

mondonut: “Not false, I provided an exact quote.”

Nope, you just cut off the sentence after “refugees” and falsely ended it to distort its meaning. There is no fullstop after “refugees”.

mondonut: “And yes, I stand by the comment it should be eliminated. And no, it would not be inhumane, all legitimate refugees should be provided access to the same UN refugee resources as the rest of the world.”

You still fail to understand that under UNHCR nothing would change:
“In effect, refugee families everywhere retain their status as refugees until they fall within the terms of a cessation clause or are able to avail themselves of one of three durable solutions already mentioned — voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement in a third country.

Also, Chapter 5 of the UNHCR publication, Procedural Standards for Refugee Status Determination under UNHCR’s Mandate is very clear that in accordance with the refugee’s right to family unity, refugee status is transferred through the generations”

And yes, I stand by my evaluation that you are an inhumane, racist antigentile shmock who would apply a totally different attititude if these refugees were Jewish. You only support the fake “repatriation” of Jews to “Eretz Israel”. The moment someone would call for the same elimination of institutions that help Jewish refugees you would accuse them of antisemitism.

Cue zionist central approved maliciously false slur and talking point.

zionist talking points wouldn’t be so bad if they weren’t so indoctrinated. It’s formulaic and repetitive. No original thought just programmed bots.

  2. oldgeezer on September 12, 2018, 10:25 am

There is no secret this was done at the behest of netanyahu.

These cuts are a perfect example of the absolute lack of humanity that zionists have. Not only netanyahu but every single Israel supporter.

Yes target children again why don’t you. You love targetting and even killing children.

    • Maghlawatan on September 12, 2018, 10:44 am

In the Middle Ages innocent Jews were accused of murdering Christian children.

Israël kills innocent Palestinian kids for sport.

“There is no secret this was done at the behest of netanyahu [and Trump’s paymaster, multi-billionaire and Zionist zealot, Sheldon Adelson.]”

The role of Adelson (and his ilk) in determining current US policy re “Israel” and the Palestinians cannot be over estimated.

    • mondonut on September 12, 2018, 11:33 am

Zionists did not make the cuts, the U.S. did (and yes, I know you think they control the US).

Nonetheless, there is zero chance of any child being harmed. After all, 167 countries voted to the renew the UNRWA mandate, so when those 167 countries kick in their share the problem will be solved.

Unless of course you think those 167 countries have an absolute lack of humanity?

It is now 70 years since the founding of the entity known as “Israel” with the support of the Truman administration and it is still dependent on America financial aid and geopolitical.
support. In short, it is an utter failure.

    For the record:
“Congressional Research Service, U.S. Foreign aid to Israel, Jeremy M. Sharpe, Specialist in Middle East Affairs, April 10, 2018.”
“Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. foreign assistance since World War II. To date, the United States has provided Israel $134.7 billion (current, or non inflation-adjusted, dollars) in bilateral assistance and missile defense funding. Almost all U.S. bilateral aid to Israel is in the form of military assistance, although in the past Israel also received significant economic assistance. At a signing ceremony at the State Department on September 14, 2016, representatives of the U.S. and Israeli governments signed a new 10-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on military aid covering FY2019 to FY2028. Under the terms of the MOU, the United States pledges to provide $38 billion in military aid ($33 billion in Foreign Military Financing grants plus $5 billion in missile defense appropriations) to Israel. This MOU replaces a previous $30 billion 10-year agreement, which runs through FY2018.”

WAKE UP AMERICA!!! It’s long since time to cut of financial aid and other support for the entity known as “Israel,” an illegal/brutal occupier and a serial violator of international humanitarian law.

This situation reminds me of aggressive panhandling.

It is up to the US to decide how it wants to spend it’s money

And as far as education is concerned, it is wrong education. Stop teaching hatred and learn to co-exist.

    • Misterioso on September 12, 2018, 11:50 am

Inane comment. As a UN member state, the US is still bound to comply with international law, e.g., the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the basis of Resolution 194 regarding the Palestinians’ inalienable right of return.

      • Boris on September 12, 2018, 1:42 pm

What does the Resolution 194 have with the US giving money to UNRWA?

And agreeing with the definition of who is a refugee?

        Please stay on topic…

      • Talkback on September 13, 2018, 11:04 am

Boris: “And agreeing with the definition of who is a refugee?”

There is not need to “agree” with the definition who is a refugee. It works the same way under UNWRA and UNHCR regarding the descendants of refugee in prolonged refugee situations all over the world.

Only Israel and its sock puppet want to redefine this definition to disenfranchise descendents of refugee. Israel of all states whose Jews know very well about being refugees. They should feel ashamed of what’ s done in their name. Unfortunately most of them are too racist to stand up against inhumane actions against anyone who isn’t Jewish.

      • Maghlawatan on September 13, 2018, 11:59 am

The reason they are still refugees is because they weren’t allowed home.

      • Talkback on September 13, 2018, 3:11 pm

        @ Maghlawatan

Exactly. But you know the Zionists. First they expell Nonjews, than they prolong their status as refugees for generations by denying them to repatriate and then they whine about the prolonged refugee problem they creatd and that repatriation and family unity are fundamental principles of refugee problems. As if the expellant is the real victim. I’m so sick of their perversions.

    • Talkback on September 12, 2018, 1:26 pm

Boris: “Stop teaching hatred and learn to co-exist.”

That should be lesson number one in Jewish schools, especially religious schools in which first graders learn that Nonjews are not human.

But you Boris, you are different. You want to co-exist and therefore support not only the right to return but want to see all Palestinian rights restored even if that would mean the end to the Jewish Apartheid state and the establishment of a state based on equality and human rights. Good for you! You have come a long way.

Once upon a time in America:

“The United States had actively supported that resolution [194] and was intensely interested in its implementation. As a member of the Conciliation Commission, it would continue to work for a peaceful settlement of all outstanding Palestine issues on the basis of that resolution.” (11 May 1949)
