Beginning to get a bad feeling about Peter Baker, the likely next Jerusalem chief for the New York Times: He has twice offered Israel as a model for American conduct, in how to deal with terrorism and with prisoners accused of terrorism.
When Israel denies UN claims of human rights atrocities in Palestine, the New York Times gives ample space to the denials. When Saudi Arabia denies atrocities in Yemen — also committed with US military aid — the NYT doesn’t give them the time of day.
New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof slips a bit of irrelevant hasbara into a column on Syrian refugees, saying that they are grateful to Israel for helping them, and if the US had done as much, it could have saved Anne Frank
President Obama talks about settlements being a problem and he talks about Palestinian “aspirations” today, but he has never condemns Israeli violence against Palestinians the way he condemns Palestinian terror. This is the safe, acceptable mainstream way of saying you favor a two state solution without crossing a line. The line is this–Israel gets to use violence and Palestinians don’t, that’s the unspoken rule, and that explains why Obama says Israel has a “right, even an obligation to defend itself” when he would never use such words about Palestinians.
In reporting a Palestinian killing an Israeli on the West Bank, the NYT says it is reminiscent of last year’s teen killings, leaving out the fact that last year’s violence began with killings of Palestinian teens at Nakba Day demo
President Obama’s speech to Adas Israel Congregation in Washington yesterday had an air of entitlement. Pandering to alleged liberals at this synagogue, he gets laughter for saying that Palestinians are “not the easiest of partners” and applause for completely ignoring the Nakba and every act of Israeli violence from 1948 to the present.
Israel is preparing for another war that kills masses of civilians– and it’s preparing its propaganda campaign early with the New York Times happy to help.
Three of four letters to the NYT on Gaza say that the blockade is a good thing. Israel can do whatever it wants and they will be sad but support Israel. It’s a clever way of trying to be liberal while being racist. MLK saw the attitude in his letter from a Birmingham jail.
Frank Bruni fails to mention all the Democratic politicians who fawned to Netanyahu on Capitol Hill in a column on Republican support for the prime minister. And oh, no mention of Palestinian human rights either.
