The seamless merger of Zionism with Judaism is the great stumbling block on the road to Palestinian liberation. I know I must continue persuading other Jews that there has to be a better way than colonization, annexation and siege to “straighten out our destiny,” and Mondoweiss helps me do that. I reject the cruel demand that Palestinians forget their history and “move on.” To refute the lies of Zionist narratives, we must invest in the truth—the words and images Mondoweiss publishes every day. The generational break among Jews that is happening in the US has moved to Britain. About 50 mostly young people called ‘Jews against the killing in Gaza’ have slammed British Jewish leadership for blindness to Israeli human rights violations. The next step is recognizing that Zionism is a morally defunct ideology.
In refusing to attend a prize ceremony in Israel, Natalie Portman says the problem with Israel is Netanyahu. But the problem is Zionism, Robert Cohen writes to Portman. “If you continue to see Zionism as essentially liberal and progressive you will never understand why it creates in your own words: ‘violence, corruption, inequality, and abuse of power’. The current Israeli government is not an aberration. When Netanyahu falls, Zionism with all of its violence, corruption and inequality will stay put.”
Zionism is a great historical error. Equality, not the two-state solution, is the only guiding principle. Zionism created a brand new set questions about Jewish security and identity just as urgent and fundamental as those of the 19th century. What happens when we become occupiers? What happens when we besiege and annex another people’s land?
Britain’s Prince William is traveling to Israel this summer, ending the royal family’s bar on visiting the country so long as it has not reached peace with Palestinians, because Brexit compels the UK to develop non-European trading partners. But he could do some good by visiting Palestinian villages erased by the Nakba and meeting the dissident soldiers’ group Breaking the Silence.
Israeli Apartheid Week events will challenge young Jews to abandon the racism that Zionism entails. It may be upsetting to young Jews who grew up with Zionist ideals, Robert Cohen says, but they have an obligation to face these perceptions and ask, Why have we made support for Zionism and Israel the touchstone of Jewish fidelity, while calling for human rights for all has become a Jewish heresy?
Trump’s Jerusalem announcement has created a great opportunity for those working for justice. It has exposed the failure of the British Jewish establishment, which supported occupation and abdicated political and ethical responsibility to lobby for 2-States. Now it will find itself defending apartheid and injustice without the cover of a peace process to protect its reputation.
Simon Schama’s defense of Zionism in a letter to the Times of London is not worthy of his standing as a historian, Robert Cohen writes. “Your denial of any connection between colonialism and Zionism makes me seriously question your historical understanding…. If you truly recognise the equal Palestinian claim to the land you must also understand Zionism was always going to turn out badly for the Palestinians.”
At a British Labour Party gathering, Jeremy Corbyn’s biggest applause came when he said the oppression of Palestinians must end. No wonder he snubbed an invitation from the Jewish Leadership Council to commemorate the Balfour Declaration at 100. And no wonder a UK diplomat says Balfour’s promise to non-Jewish communities has gone unfulfilled. Balfour anniversary is dividing British opinion on Israel.
The 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration is nearly upon us and its 67 words of apparent British imperial generosity towards the Jewish people are already taking on sacred status. Robert Cohen writes, “For the sake of future Jewish generations, not to mention historians of the 20th century, it would be a good idea to put a stop to this manufacturing of holiness, this muddling of religion and nationalism. It’s only adding to the mountain of historical and political deceit that blocks the road to a place of justice and peace.”
