UN humanitarian officials say that thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are “just a step away from famine” by May. Russia calls on UNSC members to refrain from endorsing Washington’s resolution on Gaza, denouncing it as “a license to kill” for Israel.

Palestinians are reacting to the difference in how the Western media is covering Ukraine from how it covers Palestine. This has been most obvious in two places: the issues of refugees and resistance. “When I see double standards like this I feel that I as a Palestinian don’t exist on this planet,” Sabreen Abu Libdeh, a college lecturer from Ramallah, tells Mondoweiss. 

The PA has refused to condemn Russia following its invasion of Ukraine despite pressure from the Biden Administration. One reason for this is that joining the anti-Russia western chorus would further isolate an already isolated Palestine.

Asked if the White House supports the Ukrainian people’s right to resist the occupation through any means necessary, spokesperson Jen Psaki says Yes. “We certainly support the rights of the Ukrainian people to fight back. I would note that we have seen many Ukrainians; many, many members of the Ukrainian military; and certainly President Zelenskyy in leadership fight bravely, courageously over the course of the last 12 days.” Now does that apply to Palestine? twitter voices ask.

From US government officials, to our biggest news broadcasters, and social media networks, Ukrainians were being applauded as heroes for going to whatever lengths to protect their land. The same exact things that Palestinians are labelled as terrorists for, imprisoned, and even killed.

Activists in British Columbia who have worked for years to have illegal Israeli settlement wines pulled off the shelves of publicly owned liquor stores were shocked when the government pulled Russian liquor products just two days after the invasion of Ukraine.

There’s been a lot of talk about foreign governments intervening in our political process over the last few years, but some stories don’t get covered like others.

The UAE had a clear goal in signing a deal with Israel: gaining support and arms from the U.S. This reflects a long pattern of foreign leaders from Egypt to India to Russia being friendly with Israel so as to gain access to Washington. But our press ignores the trend.
