This weekend, UC-Berkeley honors its graduates and Bill Maher’s Anti-Muslimism, together. According to Maher the entire spectrum of American Muslims are at fault for matters outside of their control, involving people that they’ve never met. For actions that they don’t condone, by subcultures that are different from their own. For mentalities that they don’t share, by groups whose names they can’t even pronounce. All because they happen to fall under the same category of religious identity. Congratulations UC-Berkeley, this Saturday, December 20, you’ll be on the wrong side of history.

McCarthyism is alive and the battle is on inside the Jewish community: The Washington DC Jewish Community Center has come down squarely against free speech, firing longtime theater director Ari Roth because he staged works that focused on the Nakba, the dispossession of Palestinians during Israel’s creation in 1948. The Jewish community is going to have to decide — Are you for free speech or donor-controlled speech?

President Obama’s historic opening to Cuba made many of us think about the long cold war against the Palestinian people. In both cases, a policy of isolating a people because they have political views our government disagrees with has gone on for decades without changing that society. Imagine the president ignoring the Israel lobby, as Obama ignored the Cuba lobby, and declaring; “Today, the United States of America is changing its relationship with the people of Israel and Palestine.”
