‘Times’ is newspaper of record for… Israel?

by Philip Weiss on January 3, 2009 · 23 comments

The NYT runs verbatim 250-word statement from Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak justifying the ground invasion… "We are not war hungry." Another service to readers…

"We are not war hungry"! No, just land and resource hungry. Obviously we'd prefer it if the natives would just leave them to us voluntarily.

EU BACKS GROUND OPERATION (Reuters)
European Union president, the Czech Republic, said on Saturday an Israeli ground incursion in Gaza was "defensive, not offensive" action.

Up yours, Phil.

Maybe the former soi-disant 'newspaper of record' [prior to its Chap. 7 liquidation] is performing a service here. That is, of documenting war crimes during its prolonged senescence.

Göring was condemned to hang for war crimes, but committed suicide the night before his execution. Can we expect anything less from the eminent Israeli, Barak?

His sister in crime, Miss Tzipi, might recall that some female war criminals were executed too.

Has this been been released in its entirety by any other news organization? I think we should be grateful that the NYT is so willing to indulge Mr. Barak, and neglect to leave at least one layer of 'mouthpiece' between the Israeli government and what everybody recognizes is a preeminent and respectable American Jewish establishment institution. Is he hoping to shore up support amongst mainstream moderate Jews who are feeling a bit queasy with this war, and using the imprimatur of his office to elicit a 'call to the colors'? Let's not make post-war connect-the-dots too easy. Methinks Ms. Starr has them a little rattled …

Any thoughts from folks closer to American Jewish opinion than me?

I am afraid, Jimmy Boy, the Israeli legal brigade are the issue already. (Addington????):

The post above was by a raging antisemitic pedophile.
I.e., NOT Jim Haygood.

The New York Times publishes news.

In its editorial and op-ed pages have been articles that are critical of the operation and supportive.

A VARIETY.

Unlike here.

AFP report from 2 hours ago:

Revealing a sharp difference in tone from the official line in Washington, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said the decision to send ground forces into Gaza after a week of air strikes was a "dangerous military escalation," while Britain called for an immediate ceasefire.
The European Union's new Czech presidency said Israel did not have the right to take military actions "which largely affect civilians," though its launching of land operations in the Gaza Strip was no surprise.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon also urged an immediate end to Israel's ground offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Ban "called for an immediate end to the ground operation, and asked that Israel do all possible to ensure the protection of civilians and that humanitarian assistance is able to reach those in need," his office said in a statement.

Well, if ya don't have a TV, I guess staring wall-eyed at the Times is the next best way to while away the hours, Richard. Or was it 'Variety' you were reading? Why not the Torah .. you secular or somepin'?

GOD'S OWN TRUF.

Unlike here.

LOL

Guys, let's keep focused on the issue at hand. I'm guessing the last poster was 'ersatz Jim'? I wonder if the majority of the personal attacks and racist comments I see on this blog aren't from impersonating provocateurs.

I read New York Times, Haaretz, Manchester Guardian, Christian Science Monitor, Washington Post, The Nation, Washington Monthly, Tikkun, American Prospect, EVERY time they are published.

Each presenting VARIETY of perspectives in their publication, unlike blogs.

Richard is correct: It's news. While his dictum with his collective staccato asides is as tasteless as ever.

Sounds familiar:

It will not be easy or short, but we are determined.

How many males have to be either killed or arrested? Half a year is not long enough to build new prisons?

I'm watching Fox news and Geraldo Rivera reports that Mayor Bloomberg, Police Chief Kelly, and Rep. Gary Ackerman are enroute to Israel in an act of solidarity and support.

Pathetic.

16 Colin Murray January 3, 2009 at 8:50 pm

GERALDO RIVERA!! LOL! I think if I were making a trip to Israel to show my support I'd want someone else telling the public …

17 Jim Haygood January 3, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Richard .. is that YOU impersonating me, at 08:23 PM, a minute after your own post?

The fractured syntax, bilious verbiage and elusive point seem more like you than S.O.G. On the other hand, the buzzphrase 'collective staccato asides' seems well beyond your own unaided literary powers, not to mention your atrophied sense of self-awareness.

In any case, I have no idea what the eff you're talking about.

The reason we are suddenly seeing EU pronouncements more pro-Zionist than even Sarkozy's, is that the presidency has just gone to the Czech Republic, where the foreign minister is Karel Schwarzenberg.

19 Jim Haygood January 3, 2009 at 9:10 pm

No fake Jim, I think the fraudster is you. It really doesn't sound like either SOG or Richard. Richard would never do it, out of a sense of HONESTY, and SOG is incapable of writing without typos. Utterly incapable. Also, SOG always resorts to ad hominem.
As I've said before, there are a variety of Jim Haygoods–I think the solution is to ban all the IP addresses.

It's not often reported that Geraldo Rivera once considered running for the Israeli Knesset. http://www.forward.com/articles/6662/” rel=”nofollow”>"I would die for Israel," he said.

I hope Phil is aware of the fact that unless he confronts his webmaster over the ID theft which this site's own built in software makes possible (the CSS scripts I keep mentioning, and you can find them in the source code), then he may end up being sued by someone slanderously impersonated here to the detriment of their career. You wouldn't like a seven figure lawsuit, Phil.

The Mighty Wurlitzer has an agenda even when not pertaining to the Op-Ed pages.

Why would this come as a surprise to anyone?

23 Jim Haygood January 4, 2009 at 9:40 am

Fascinating observation coming from Rowan. Since he has no career, other than being a troll, I wonder what he's planning?
