Henochowicz suggests Israelis use human shields

emilyAnother ravishing picture by Emily Henochowicz. Wow. This is an artist on fire, determined to shift American consciousness. Title of picture is "Human Shield." I say Israeli because of the image of the settlements in the Jerusalem hills, and Henochowicz's reference to tear gas in her comment about the pic. Thanks to Susie Kneedler.

what is there to suggest or interpret? the idf’s use of human shields is documented in proceedings before the israeli supreme court.

did someone do some editorial surgery to the post? the text seems to have changed since i last looked.

  3. How Henochowicz makes us wonder: here about the cowardly crouch of the IDF soldier behind the brave, helpless Palestinian child.

She even invites us to ask about the contrast between her more public title, “Apropriated Memory 1,” with the second one, “Human Shield,” and their connection to her introduction, “I was too distracted by the smell of tear gas to see this:”–How IDF attacks prevent witnesses from recognizing their cringing cruelty?

Where American historians and journalists, for the most part, utterly fail us in documenting human atrocities at the hands of us and our allies, artists will step up to fill the role.

And we aren’t nearly as kind and forgiving and willing to fake “objectivity” for the sake of expediency.

I’m impressed. I don’t think too much of modern art, but even I can see the power in that piece.
