Something else about "60 Minutes." Tonight it did a segment on Bob Woodward's new book on Iraq, which of course is being published by CBS's sister company. Anyway, Woodward offered as a bombshell that the U.S. has techniques for targeted assassinations of Al Qaeda figures in Iraq, and then left it at that. It's a national security issue, he said, he wasn't going to draw the curtain all the way. Shocker!
The amazement to me here is that Israel does targeted assassinations all the time, and no one here raises an eyebrow. If these techniques are so anathema–and I think they are, they are never surgical, they always breed hatred–then why isn't Israel's method also anathematized? I'd point out that in the Ahmadinejad transcript above, the Iranian president also scores the Israelis for "targeted assassinations." That line was cut by 60 Minutes. But I guess these techniques don't go over so well in the Muslim world..
