The Kids Behind Obama

Just saw Obama’s speech. The most uplifting amazing speech I can remember. The comparison of the revolutionaries of ’76 who broke an empire to the freedom riders and marchers of ’64 who braved firehoses–breaks my American heart. I think the guy’s going to win (forget my predictions of Edwards, whose speech was too sharp, or Huckabee, whose speech was a lot of charming bromides, empty of significance).

Did you notice the kids behind Obama? Hillary was surrounded by party leaders, pols, professionals. Obama spoke in the round, and whenever he offered a stirring, idealistic thought, about America regaining its place in the world, or acting on climate change, or overcoming racial discrimination, or fighting the lobbyists, you saw kids nodding with what seemed tears in their eyes. One in particular had a funky bohemian hat and a thick beard and a t-shirt on. This is ’60s energy, baby. Oohlala!
