Heralded by Palestinians as ‘angel’ and ‘merciful martyr,’ Razan Al-Najjar is an afterthought in western press

Israel/Palestine
on 39 Comments

Let’s say Hamas fired a rocket that killed a young Israeli nurse while she was tending to the wounded from earlier rockets. Is there any doubt that the mainstream media would cover her death extensively, with photos, and interviews with friends and family?

But when Israeli snipers murdered a 21-year-old Palestinian nurse named Razan Al-Najjar yesterday, the mainstream media was nearly silent. Today’s New York Times print edition only includes her as an afterthought, in a report by the usually reliable Rick Gladstone about Israel’s latest defeat at the United Nations. Gladstone’s article notes only that “A 21-year-old Palestinian health worker was killed. . .”  Gladstone’s editors could not be bothered to add her name, or to change the passive sentence to report who actually killed her.

By mid-morning in New York, the Times did start to rectify its error. A report went up, datelined KHUZAA, Gaza Strip, that includes basic background about this remarkable young woman, including an interview with her father, Ashram. A photograph shows desperate Gazans trying to carry her body to safety after the Israeli sniper shot her. The report did include a no comment from Israel’s military spokesman, Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, who is normally voluble when he is inventing violence by Gazans.

The Times’s report also has a 2-minute video interview it did with Razan Al-Najjar last month. The interview is powerful, and painful to watch. But it concentrates on whether, as a woman, she has any difficulty doing her job as a health worker. She does get to say that she and the other resisters in Gaza are showing the world that “without weapons we can do anything.”

Other mainstream media outlets have so far missed the Razan Al-Najjar story almost entirely. The Washington Post reported absolutely nothing. The Guardian buried a brief wire service report on its website. The BBC, somewhat surprisingly, also had nothing about Razan Al-Najjar, although it did report that the International Committee of the Red Cross is sending two surgical teams to Gaza to help with the “unprecedented health crisis.” While National Public Radio today allowed an Israeli to ascribe the Gaza killings to Hamas, and failed to mention the latest victim.

On the plus side, social media worldwide is telling some of the missing truths about Razan Al-Najjar. As of this morning, 111,000 tweets had already mentioned her name. Notably, Israeli parliamentarian Ayman Odeh tweeted that an “angel’s life” was taken and highlighted Israeli claims that every bullet its snipers fired can be accounted for.

Palestinian accounts are lionizing al-Najjar, saying her name will never be forgotten. From Palestine Live:

“Princess of Return”, Razan Al-Najjar. A name and a story that will be remembered for generations to come as the youngest dedicated Palestinian paramedic whose worry was to save lives. On 1st June 2018 she was targeted by an israeli sniper.

Palestinian media also showed a photograph of her mother clutching her bloodstained medic’s coat, and calling al Najjar a “merciful martyr.”

Razan al-Najjar’s mother clutching her paramedic coat, stained with her blood and that of other protesters, June 2, 2018. From Palestine Live.

And this tweet from march organizers mocking Israeli claims that it would investigate the killing:

Israeli sick logic: It did not happen. If it did, it was not us. If it was us he/she was a terrorist. If he/she is not a terrorist, the bullet strayed. If the bullet did not stray, then Hamas is to blame.

UPDATE: Here, from Haaretz, is a video that seems to show Razan Al-Najjar and other Gazan medics approaching the border with their hands in the air when she was murdered:

    Thanks, James.

Blessings to Razan Al-Najjar’s mother and father and her family, both immediate and extended (all of Gaza). Omar’s painting is breathtaking. Eerily, it bears a striking resemblance to Razan’s mother clutching her bloody paramedic coat……

    I appreciate this very much:

I would be surprised to hear anything at all… Israel will let this assassination pass like so many others. It’s bad for their ‘most moral army’ and ‘only democracy in the middle east’ schtick. The NYT will follow their lead and in their foul and murderous footsteps.

An excellent summation. I would perhaps also add the Zio default”war zone justification”

Razan Al – Najjar RIP should be seen as a Palestinian Anne Frank. There will hopefully in due course be a museum in her memory and in memory of all the other defenceless innocent civilians mowed down by the Zio killing machine. And the brutal thugs who slaughtered her ( including the Yahoo,Liebermann and the most moral IDF General Staff who issued the shoot to kill civilians policy) should in due course be held to account and sentenced accordingly just like their forebears at the Nuremberg Trials.

I wish for that day to come and soon, Ossinev!

Fatou Bensouda and the ICC must stand for something or they should be disbanded and their millions taken away, and some international tribunal be empowered to convene~ a tribunal that doesn’t drag its feet and is committed to justice. I am not talking about retrospective/retroactive justice, but real- time justice. The crimes are happening now, they happened last year, and the many decades before now. They are all premeditated crimes and need to be stopped now.

“war zone justification” is a bunch of zio- poo. Israelis are the only ones who benefit from their constant state of violence against Palestinians. It’s an abomination.

Watch Nikki Hayley get humiliated at the UN, after she begged for support for the US resolution, blaming Hamas for the suffering of the Palestinians, not mentioning the brutality of the occupiers. She truly deserved this.

The US is now like a pariah nation, the world has given the US a strong message. The Trump administration has made it worse by handing Jerusalem over to the occupiers by moving it’s embassy over there.
Nikki Hayley like many other US representatives is trying to bully and coax others to support US ridiculous support of Israel. This time it has backfired on the US.

What a hateful woman, but she is representing an arrogant country, especially under Trump, who has cut aid going to the Palestinians, through the UN, because the Palestinians are refusing to accept the pitiful crumbs thrown at them by Israel and the US. They have been robbed of everything, still losing lands, and they are supposed to be grateful to the US, for nothing. America’s foreign policy supporting Israel, and ignoring the plight of the Palestinians, is utterly disgusting.

The US is horrified that Russia is trying to influence and meddle in the country, while totally ignoring the fact that Israel, an alien nation that has spied on the US, killed many Americans, and sponges off it, has already inserted itself into our political system, controls the congress, and has been able to make US President dance to their tune. I am appalled that tax payer money keeps going to this despicable nation.

The BBC did follow the report you mention on the ‘health crisis’ – a rather odd way to put it; not a word we use of the Blitz – on May 31 with a more specific report about Razzn el Najjar on June 1. They treated the funeral, rather than the death, as the occasion for the report. I suppose every word has to be scrutinised by the Israeli press attaché before publication.

I beg to disagree. I think most Americans are sick and tired of perpetual war, particularly in the Middle East, and are catching on to the negative impact our ties with Israel are having on this. But, like a growing number of other issues, the government is basically doing its own thing, subservient to the military industrial complex and detached from the wishes of the American public.

((((((north) claims if the victim was a Jewish Israeli nurse the press would be all over the story with no basis in fact and is strictly his angry emotional opinion. The border conflict has been consistently portrayed by the gullible, lazy press corps hiding behind the protection of the IDF while having all the time they needed to compose the most dramatic and overly artistic’war journalism’ ever seen. the IDF was portrayed as unemotional at least and joyful of killing more often. No matter how north wants to spin this story there are only two things that are true. 1) her death was tragic but eminently preventable and 2) Hamas bears almost total responsibility for the situation that brought on her death. Another waste of a young human with vast potential who, were it not for the leadership would certainly have been working in a field hospital instead of rushing the border wearing white but no other clear markings she was a medic. Without the Hamas, she would be alive today.

        @….

War is by default, tragic. Her death was covered in the Israeli press. Her shooting will be investigated though there is no sign suggesting anything illegal under rules of engagement.

While I think it’s tragic this young woman died(was shot) I wasn’t there to see the circumstances. She was wearing white, but apparently not wearing a red crescent. idk if this was a factor.

I might be sympathetic to the outrage here (like I am sympathetic to the gazans who suffer under Hamas. This woman was obviously trying to do something meaningful I her short life. Notice, her martyrdom posters do not have the Hamas brand. In fact, I think I noticed fatahs symbol and Arafat in the corner. It might be as a Fatah family, her family is at odds with Hamas. Not that that matters in her death.) But the outrage here is more of the same hatred, German Reich comparisons, refusal to admit how Hamas leadership and hierarchy steals billions from ordinary Palestinians severely effecting their lives. Not acknowledging that the destruction of the kerem civilian crossing, bombing of the fuel lines, the mortar that blew up the electricity lines… All depriving gazans of resources they are supposed to be desperately in need of. It’s a cynical tactic by Hamas at the least. Why the population would be supportive of these actions is a question on wether the hatred of Israel is stronger then their right to have public services the leadership enjoys.
. Also, for all the women and feminists here who accuse Israel of oppression you can observe not one single woman in any photo who isn’t covered with either fully or with hijab . Like Iran but worse. Would you want to live like that. So, while Israel is certainly responsible directly for this young woman’s death,(and takes responsibility for it) it would be too optimistic to think any gazans would be free to speak their minds to press on how they feel about their rulers, Hamas and how they manipulated events at the border

. Also, your epithets of evil and threats of divine or other forms of comeuppance are pathetic. How long has an adult Israeli or American been reading about/hearing threats of the coming demise of Israel. How many times has it been said, ‘things are turning the corner’- or’as soon as we get rid of those elders of zy…I mean the lobby. What I think is really coming down the pike is more international pressure for the Palestinians to negotiate a deal that ends the conflict.

There will be no deal where the conflicts end is postponed as it would invite decades more conflict and aggressions on both sides. Nobody is claiming that after a long enough period of peace that other treaties could Not be made concerning borders, populations, etc. Other then this, it isn’t going to get better then the Olmert offer. Original refugees will be compensated. But time, on the contrary, is not on the palestinian peoples side. There have been no serious protests from Israeli Arabs. West Bank staffs are enjoying somewhat of a boom and are living more closely to normal then ever beforeThe dictator Erdogan is becoming the new de facto speaker for Palestinian rights while slaughtering his own ethnic Kurds and denying the Turkish genocide against Armenia. A moral beacon of leadership.

Reality on the ground as of now is bleak in terms of anybody willing to start negotiations. Even the fanatical Jews have settled down a bit.

Y’all realize that after this young nurse, and maybe even before, died they officially have declared a ‘victory’. Of course Israel has officially declared victory as well.

But- They fully admitted, in fact it was an actual denial that the fence skirmish was anything but intended to be peaceful. One commander bragged about how much intelligence his operatives gleaned.

But since you wont believe me as a so-called ‘professional hasbara ‘ then by all means ask the Arabic members to translate Hamas statements to press. Is Hamas known for lying about their own enclave?’ So yeah, go ahead and yell rotten names as that always accomplishes a lot

“BTW It is not a border. It is a concentration camp fence.”

      Precisely!!

      For the record:
The International Committee of the Red Cross: “The whole of Gaza’s civilian population is being punished for acts for which they bear no responsibility. The closure therefore constitutes a collective punishment imposed in clear violation of Israel’s obligations under international humanitarian law. The Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, ratified by Israel, bans collective punishment of a civilian population.”

“In practice, Gaza has become a huge, let me be blunt, concentration camp for right now 1,800,000 people” – Amira Hass, 2015 correspondent for Haaretz, speaking at the Forum for Scholars and Publics at Duke University.

To quote Dov Weisglass, then PM Ariel Sharon’s senior adviser:
“‘The significance of the [proposed] disengagement plan [implemented in 2005] is the freezing of the peace process,’ Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s senior adviser Dov Weisglass has told Ha’aretz. ‘And when you freeze that process, you prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state, and you prevent a discussion on the refugees, the borders and Jerusalem. Effectively, this whole package called the Palestinian state, with all that it entails, has been removed indefinitely from our agenda….’ Weisglass, who was one of the initiators of the disengagement plan, was speaking in an interview with Ha’aretz for the Friday Magazine. ‘The disengagement is actually formaldehyde,’ he said. ‘It supplies the amount of formaldehyde that is necessary so there will not be a political process with the Palestinians.’” (Top PM Aide: Gaza Plan Aims to Freeze the Peace Process, Ha’aretz, October 6, 2004)

      https://www.counterpunch.or
      Counterpunch, May 16, 2018
“Kill and Kill and Kill,”by Saree Makdisi
      EXCERPT:
“The demographer Arnon Sofer of Haifa University is the architect of the current isolation of Gaza. In 2004, he advised the government of Ariel Sharon to withdraw Israeli forces from within Gaza, seal the territory off from the outside world, and simply shoot anyone who tries to break out. ‘When 2.5 million people live in a closed-off Gaza, it’s going to be a human catastrophe,’ Sofer told an interviewer in the Jerusalem Post (11 November 2004); ‘Those people will become even bigger animals than they are today, with the aid of an insane fundamentalist Islam. The pressure at the border will be awful. It’s going to be a terrible war. So, if we want to remain alive, we will have to kill and kill and kill. All day, every day.’ He added that ‘the only thing that concerns me is how to ensure that the boys and men who are going to have to do the killing will be able to return home to their families and be normal human beings.’

“This imperative to kill and kill and kill human ‘animals’ explains the violence taking place at the gates of Gaza—which has been sealed off precisely according to Sofer’s prescription—for the past several weeks, most calamitously this Monday. The killing now taking place is, in other words, exactly, to the letter, the ‘killing and killing and killing’ he called for fourteen years ago. Calmly premeditated and intentionally designed by its architect, it is equally calmly and intentionally being carried out by Israeli soldiers (about whose psychological traumas I, unlike Sofer, am not even remotely interested). In response to the current killing and shooting, a senior member of the Israeli parliament, Avi Dichter, reassured his audience on live television on Monday that they need not be unduly concerned. Their army, he told them, ‘has enough bullets for everyone.’ If every man, woman and child in Gaza gathers at the gate, in other words, there is a bullet for every one of them. They can all be killed, no problem.

“Remember Kurtz in Heart of Darkness? ‘Exterminate the brutes!’ The genocidal intent expressed by the likes of Sofer and Dichter—mainstream and senior figures in Israeli politics—is so obvious as to make assiduous interpretation of their words unnecessary. The people of Gaza are exterminable because they are not Jewish: that is what the situation amounts to, not according to critics of the siege of Gaza, but according to its architects, planners, enablers and supporters.”

Oh gosh no. Almost the entire Israel state has to prove its innocence. It may go further than that before it’s over.

“are u now saying that the accused has to prove his innocence? maybe in ur hami world of hypocritical self losers. now show me the facts for idf guilt or melt away from their fence”

Wow now you are really spinning yourself dizzy. Just calm down ,deep breaths, relax shoulders and rethink.

“The Accused has to prove his innocence”. Would that be the Hamas accused or just the most moral accused. Remember deep breaths and come to a reasoned conclusion.
So I am getting the sense that you are saying is that Hamas did not shoot and kill her. So by default you are admitting that the shot came from Zioland. Or are you suggesting that it was eg a private individual in Gaza shooting within Gaza or a private individual (perchance a visiting Ziotourist) from the Zioland side of the concentration camp fence.

Oh and please do explain WTF a ” self loser ” is. I know what a loser is. I know what a ” bad loser” is but a “self loser”well you have got me on that one sunshine. Perhaps it is simply that you are bored with typing the same old “self loathing/self denying/self hating” mantra that you decided to invent a new one. Not difficult I suppose if you are a passionate and zealous Zionist.

    Deep breath/exhale. Deep breath/exhale.And again.

    @Debacle
Profuse apologies I missed this little gem and I have not given you the credit due to a commentator who is taking the piss out of himself and what he is saying.

The Israeli army claims it knows where every bullet landed. Will it be called to account on the dozens of bullets which landed in the bodies of journalists, photographers and medicos?
