Questions remain about Bernie Sanders’ time in Israel during the early 1960s, when he reportedly visited the Sha‘ar ha-‘Amakim kibbutz run by the ha-Shomer ha-Tza‘ir movement. Historian Joel Beinin was a leader of ha-Shomer ha-Tza‘ir in the U.S. from 1959 to 1969 and says Bernie Sanders was not a member during that time. He also says that anyone looking to red-bait Sanders over his time on the kibbutz will be solely disappointed, “any socialist ideas Bernie Sanders may have encountered via ha-Shomer ha-Tza‘ir wouldn’t have included a positive evaluation of Soviet communism.”

With November seemingly around the corner, the GOP candidates have honed in on cultivating Islamophobia as a sound strategy for drumming up their base. While the media focuses on the demagoguery of Donald Trump, the war-mongering of Ted Cruz and the sheer-unhinged nature of Ben Carson – the reality is that even “moderate” candidates, such as Marco Rubio are riding a wave of anti-Muslim sentiment, in order to seem tough on national security.

Democratic voters are more concerned with economic policy than foreign policy. Witness last night’s debate, in which the candidates clashed on bank policy, and the Sanders campaign promptly fact-checked Clinton assertions with Elizabeth Warren’s book showing Clinton’s obedience to bank interests. When will Clinton’s credibility gap begin to hurt her perceived foreign policy “strength”?
