Ed Markey is facing pressure to stand up for Palestinians, but he hasn’t budged in his support for Israel

Last year activists called on Ed Markey stand up for Palestine, but they have yet to see any action.

Last month forty-four members of the Senate sent a letter to the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee expressing their support for an additional $500 million in military aid to Israel, which would be used to replenish the country’s missile defense system. The letter, which was led by Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Mike Rounds (R-SD), was signed by 34 Democrats and 10 Republicans.

Democratic signatories included Senators Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Ed Markey (D-MA).

Markey has previously faced backlash from his progressive base over his support for Israel and refusal to promote Palestinian human rights. While Israel bombed Gaza, in May 2021, Markey made a series of tweets suggesting that both sides were to be blamed and asserting that Israel had the right to defend itself.

Markey’s comments on the attacks inspired a number of former Markey staffers, volunteers, supporters, and endorsing organizations to draft a statement criticizing his position. “As the young people, organizers, and advocates who are responsible for Senator Markey’s victory, we are upset and disappointed by his recent statement on Israel’s illegal occupation and ethnic cleansing of Palestine,” it read. “He followed in the footsteps of Mitt Romney and Donald Trump by saying it’s a ‘both sides’ issue, which ignores the current and historical power imbalance between Israel and Palestine — and couldn’t be farther from the truth. Senator Markey’s refusal to support justice in Palestine is antithetical to the Green New Deal and the progressive movement that won him re-election.”

The document called on Markey to initiate an investigation into how U.S. arms sales are used by Israel, develop legislation aimed at halting forced displacement in East Jerusalem, demand the enforcement of arms export laws, and introduce a Senate companion to Rep. Betty McCollum’s (D-MN) H.R. 2590 or the Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act.

One year later Markey has not done any of these things.

“Markey has no material or political incentives to support Palestinian liberation, even after our massive public pressure campaign last year,” former Markey campaign fellow Calla Walsh told Mondoweiss. “Our demands in the May 2021 letter to Markey were quite minimal, yet he still wouldn’t budge. The experience taught me that, instead of watering down our demands, we should make them bolder and louder, because Zionist politicians will oppose them no matter what. Instead of trying to reform the occupation, we should be fighting for an end to the occupation and fully embracing our support for the Palestinian resistance. And instead of supporting liberal Zionists like Markey, I hope others join me in organizing with the BDS Movement.”

In October 2021 activists tried to pressure Markey on the issue again by holding a rally and dropping off a petition with representatives from his office. The petition, which was signed by over 1,200 people and also delivered to members of Senator Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) office, echoed many of the same demands from the May letter. “We, Palestinian American constituents and allies, urge you as concerned residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to end our complicity in Israel’s apartheid system of military occupation, settler colonization, and disregard for the humanity of the Palestinian people,” it read.

Palestinian community organizer and BDS Boston member Lea Kayali was one of the activists who delivered the petition and signatures to Markey. She told Mondoweiss that his support for further Iron Dome funding was disappointing, but not surprising. “Instead of putting his energies towards ending the colonial onslaught of violence, Senator Markey is dousing the fire with gasoline,” she told Mondoweiss. “The Senator’s failings are particularly stark in contrast to the actions of his colleague in the House, Representative Pressley, who joined a congressional letter demanding an end to the iminent dispossession of the residents of Masafer Yatta. That Senator Markey would choose to broadcast his unwavering support for apartheid and colonialism in Palestine in the midst of ongoing ethnic cleansing of Masafer Yatta is repugnant.”

“None of our demands have been met,” she continued. “We wrote the letter so that the delegation would not have the excuse of ignorance. Their actions, or silence, between then and now solidify their position on the wrong side of history.”

Another organizer, who helped draft the petition and asked to remain anonymous, said the reaction of Markey’s staff to the demands seemed “very performative” as if “he was trying to see what he was up against and not interested in actually building coalitions.”

Markey’s support for Israel certainly predates recent events. During a 2013 interview with the Boston Globe, when Markey was still a Massachusetts congressman, he refused to place any blame on Israel for the “peace process” falling apart. During the 2014 Gaza War, Markey condemned Hamas rocket attacks but refrained from criticizing Israel’s bombing campaign.

In 2016 he cosponsored the Combating BDS Act and signed a letter calling for increased military aid to Israel. The group Massachusetts Peace Action sent the Senator a letter expressing their disappointment. “What is the justification for increasing the already large $3.1 billion in annual aid to Israel when we have budget constraints and so many unmet needs at home?,” it asks. In 2018 he cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act, a bill calling for the full funding of security assistance to Israel.

“Liberation politics are not a buffet, but an ethos,” said Kayali. “Senator Markey has made it clear that the ‘progressivism’ he claims to support – rights to healthcare, ending racial violence, and economic freedom – shouldn’t extend to Palestinians under occupation. That is racist, and progressives in Massachusetts should see it for what it is.”

Major Human Rights Groups Call for End of Impunity for Israeli Apartheid Policies in Palestinian Territories (juancole.com)
“Major Human Rights Groups Call for End of Impunity for Israeli Apartheid Policies in Palestinian Territories” Middle East Monitor,VIDEO:
ICC case on Israeli attacks: Legal team to represent Abu Akleh – YouTube
June 2/22, by Nasim Ahmed.
EXCERPT:
“Ex-Al Jazeera Chief, Wadah Khanfar, has blasted Western mainstream media over its failure to report honestly about the brutal reality of Israel’s illegal occupation. Speaking at a landmark conference in London yesterday, alongside a panel of representatives from all the major human rights groups, Khanfar paid tribute to journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed by an Israeli sniper & urged the mainstream media to report honestly about the ‘naked truth of the apartheid regime that dehumanises Palestinians’. The killing of Abu Akleh is a ‘tipping point’ said Khanfar, who Joined Al Jazeera at the same time as the slain journalist.
“Khanfar was one of six speakers at the event organised by the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians. The five other guests were representatives of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Al Haq, B’Tselem & Democracy in the Arab World Now (DAWN). All recently declared that Israel is committing the crimes of apartheid & took part in the event titled: ‘Responding to Apartheid in Israel & the Occupied Palestinian Territories: the UK’s obligation under International Law.’
“Now the President of Al Sharq Forum, the 53-year-old accused the mainstream media of being complicit in a cover-up to hide the reality of the Israeli apartheid regime under ‘layers of lies, fabrication and obfuscation’. Why Israel is charged with the crime of apartheid was explained by representatives of the human rights group. In short, there are three components to the apartheid designation under international law: the existence of a regime of racial domination from the river to the sea in historic Palestine; the use of violence to maintain & preserve that regime & the intention to preserve a regime of racial domination. The consensus amongst all the main human rights group is that Israel meets all three conditions.” (cont’d)

“Khanfar predicts that the powerful image of Abu Akleh’s funeral will prove to be a pivotal moment in defeating Israel’s apartheid regime, in the same way as the funeral of slain African National Congress member & anti-apartheid activist, Ashley Krielas. The image of a police officer attempting to remove the ANC flag draped over the coffin of Kriel during his funeral in 1987 in Langa Township, Cape Town, became a powerful symbol of resistance which led to the release of the late Nelson Mandela. The flag of the ANC was illegal under white South African rule, in the same way as the flag of Palestine is proscribed under Israeli apartheid rule.

“Appealing to journalists to end their dehumanisation of Palestinians, Khanfar urged them to live up to the moral standards & uphold the integrity of their position. ‘Who can hold them accountable?’ asked Khanfar rhetorically, speaking of the ‘deadly impunity’ enjoyed by Israel. ‘Western hegemony created Israel impunity … Israel is an apartheid state legally, politically & morally.’

“Khanfar turned his focus to the wider horizon & swiped at the so called ‘Abraham Accords’. He mentioned his last appearance at the same London venue to speak at an event organised by MEMO to commemorate the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. In the four years between the murder of the Saudi journalist & that of Abu Akleh, an ‘alliance of authoritarian regime & apartheid regime’ has become cemented said Khanfar. They seek to ‘dominate, suffocate & subjugate all calls for democracy’ he warned, while stressing on the need to form an ‘international front to challenge the authoritarian & apartheid alliance’”.

Very disappointed in Senator Markey. It looks to me like he has no independent moral agency. Nice smile though.

Heads up!!
Israeli media: “Israel” preparing for Hezbollah response over Karish

“Israeli media say the occupation is preparing for various security scenarios in response to the placement of the new Energean platform in the Karish field, a contested maritime zone, to extract gas.
“Israeli news website Walla reported on Friday that the Israeli occupation forces are preparing for a response by Lebanese Hezbollah to the Israeli activity at the Karish gas platform.
“According to the website, the IOF claimed that it was preparing for a ‘provocation’, adding that the current issue requires military and diplomatic thinking.
“In addition, the website said that Israeli security forces warned of a drone attack, a bombing, or even missiles fired at the Karish platform.
“It is noteworthy that the Karish field is located within borderline number 29, which the Beirut negotiating delegation considers a Lebanese border.
“Walla said that the Israeli occupation forces are preparing for various security scenarios after activating the platform in the disputed area, quoting security sources as saying that the IOF is not deploying sufficient forces around the Karish field.
“On Thursday, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, stressed that ‘The main goal should be preventing the enemy from extracting oil and gas from Karish and impeding the activity that will start or that might have already started.’
“Sheikh Naim Qassem, the Deputy Secretary-General of Hezbollah, had said that the Lebanese Resistance is prepared to take appropriate measures against ‘Israel’s’ attempts at gas exploration in disputed maritime zones.
“In the same context, the head of the Lebanese military-technical delegation and negotiator, Brigadier General Bassam Yassin, had explained that ‘Israel’ would be violating the Lebanese sovereignty by extracting gas from the Karish field and exporting it.”

The media has so entrenched narratives re “terrorism”, that Markey, like most other politicians, want to stay safe by insisting, “sides must protect innocent civilians”.
